Report: Jazz in running for Chris Kaman

Posted by: J.C.2. on July 5th, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

ESPN’s NBA analyst Ric Bucher is reporting the Jazz are one of five teams inte running for free agent center Chris Kaman.

My first thought, WHAT? We already have to many bigs and so this means a trade of Millsap or Jefferson is possibly in line, pending us signing Kaman. The Jazz have been linked to Kaman quite a bit over the years. What do you think?

I don’t like Kaman but I guess if he where to sign at 6 or 7 mil and be a bench player behind Kanter than I would take him.

  2. Omar says:

Kanter…KAnter….KANter….KANTer….KANTEr….KANTER!!!!!! Why not Kanter?! I dont get it.

  3. Omar says:

@Logan agreed. Only as a backup, less than 8M.

  4. Logan says:

There is no Can’t in Kanter.

  5. J.C.2. says:

Omar – if we sign him and trade Jefferson, Kanter will likely start and Kaman coming off the bench. I’m not against signing Kaman for cheaper than Al and trading Jefferson.

  6. J.C.2. says:

If we can get Kaman for around 3 years 7-8 million a year I say do it and trade Jefferson.

If we bring Al back when his contract is over here are the approximate comparisons.

Jefferson = 3-4 years at $13-$15 million per year.
Kaman = 3-4 years at $8-$10 million per year.

Kaman is a better defender and rebounder, and can still score for much cheaper. Do it!

  7. Omar says:

Hahaha @Logan, and agreed @JC2 that might be a perfect scenario. I think Al and Millsap are gone. Kaman and Kanter split the Center minutes, Favors 30 at PF and Evans 18 at the backup PF. Sounds great to me!!

  8. I posted this exact comment on a different post but I’m putting it here again because it applies.

I’m the biggest Kanter fan there is but I’m with Mike. Here’s what I would like to see happen with the “bigs issue”: Trade Jefferson (as good as his offensive moves are, his defense is horrible, and he’s hurting the growth of our young bigs who could potentially become far better them him) for something like a three point shooter or a legitimate starting point guard. Then sign a young big like Ersan Ilyasova. Then we could start Favors at the 5 and Paul at the 4 and bring Kanter off the bench for significant minutes at least for a time until he is ready to take over the starting 5 spot then we could move Favors to the 4 and bring Paul off the bench. I would be very pleased with a line up of Favors, Paul, Kanter, Illyasova, and Evens as are bigs. I know it is small and it might need one more player to be complete but these 5 players could be effective bigs for years to come. I’m thankful for what Jefferson has done for us while he has been here but he needs to go. I love Paul too, he is a fighter but I think eventually he is going to have to accept his spot as a 6th man. In no more then two years from now Favors AND Kanter need to be our starters. I think Paul would accept that role with no complaining too. NO KAMAN PLEASE.

  9. I’ve herd rumors that Bucks are trying to resign Ersan Ilyasova and if they don’t the Nets are going after him pretty hard. I think he is a valuable enough player that if he was signed we should go after him with a trade. Offer up Jefferson or whatever but I want this guy. He fits our needs (three shooting, he shot something like 45% from three last year) , he’s not a household name which fits in Utah, and I think he could compliment Kanter and Favors quite nicely. NO KAMAN PLEASE!

  10. Zach says:

I don’t love Caveman but I think if getting him makes Al and perhaps Millsap expendable, I’d be for the addition. If we sign Kaman and trade Al for a shooter/go-to scorer, we will be better.

  11. Jake says:

How about we keep kaman and big al an trade millsap for Green

  12. Maybe we pick him up. Trade al. And start sap at the pf and favors at the c with Kaman and kanter off the bench. Kanter may be able to play the pf. This would help sap start and favors but we would be a little small

  13. Guido says:

That means KOC dont want Al ll be back. Great news guys.

  14. L.K.Anderson says:

Little off the subject but Jazz have signed Evans to a three year 5.5Mill contract. YES. Welcome back Jeremy..

  15. Omar says:

That’s way on subject LK, that’s a lot of money for a PF that’s gonna get a TON of DNPs, I think Millsap negotiations arent going well. I think Millsap is gone guys. Maybe, Evans can be the new Millsap?!

  16. JRN5150 says:

I agree with Omar. Next we try for a low contract for Big Al. I would give him 4/40 because he would start for at least a whole year of that. Can you imagine him matching up against the bench bigs of other teams? It would be a beautiful thing to watch.

  17. L.K.Anderson says:

Real GM is the link. That is pretty low for a three year deal. If he can show big improvement the the next contract will be bigger.

  18. kyler says:

I think that getting Kaman would be a great pick up. He is a solid player that would give the jazz quality minutes. i think we all agree that if we get him Al is gone. which is what we have been asking for to clear up playing time for kanter. it gives us a solid player to either start at the center position or, if kanter starts playing great, can come off the bench and contribute this would be a great signing!

  19. Jake says:

Any more news on us signing Danny Green?

  20. Omar says:

1.8M a year is not a lot, in and of itself, but last year Evans averaged 7 minutes a game and only played in 29 games, and that was with Favors getting a lot of minutes at C. Next year, with Kanter getting the majority of minutes at PF, resigning Millsap for 4 more yrars, Evans will get a ton of DNP, and PT will be about 7 minutes in blowouts. I think Millsap might not be wanting 8M per and a bench role. Al either since they are talking to Kaman. I think both might gone.

No news is good news with Danny Green, my theory is that the Jazz have “promised” Green. They just want to balance the books, so they know what they can offer him numbers wise and Spurs wont match. Once the Al and Millsap situation is delt with, Jazz sign Green.

  21. Omar says:

*Kanter getting more minutes at C and Favors the majority of his minutes at PF

  22. L.K.Anderson says:

@Omar: Yes that is a lot of money. But in todays market not so. I think Evans could be a combo forward with a few talents other than scoring. Dennis Rodman is in the HOF. Check out his scoring average. He is there because he was a rebound specialist. I see Evans as a defensive player who can block shots, rebound, make or cause steals, and he brings so much energy to ALL the team players. And the fans love him..I hope we see him as a regular rotation player.

  23. Omar says:

@LK I LOVE Evans, he deserves every penny. Im just saying I think the Jazz have turned the page and I hope so!! I think if the Jazz kept Millsap wanting starter minutes and Favors getting 30 minutes himself, Evans would get buried again. Im just trying to project, most teams would not guarantee a player 1.8M over 3 years if they were intending to bury him with DNPs and no PT over the next 3 years. So Im guessing Millsap might be out the door.

    Im guessing,
Kanter 25, Kaman 23, (Henry Sims)
    Favors 30, Evans 18

  24. Omar says:

I see Evans as being the Jazz version of Ibaka!

  25. Andrew says:

I’m really loving this offseason. A lot of good movement, and a lot of bad movement throughout the NBA. I’m angry with the Nash deal, but I just heard the Timberwolves acquired Batum and Brandon Roy. If there’s a single team that deserves to do well in the league other than the Jazz, it’s the Wolves. I’ve always liked them a lot, and I’m glad they’re getting some talent. It’s exciting to watch. And Lin going to Houston? Not the best idea for him, I don’t think.

  26. @Andrew Batum has an offer but will be matched by Blazers, Lin will be matched and going back to NY,

I like the Kaman, Favors, Kanter, Evans 4 bigs so maybe it will happen I have doubted KOC all off season but now that I think he is getting on the right track he will screw it up somehow.

  27. Andrew says:

I think you’re right about the Batum deal, but do you think that the Knicks will try to sign Lin when they just signed Kidd? I’m doubtful.

  28. He means to much to New York to let him go.

  29. Just Bing images of Chris Kaman. Something isn’t right with this guy. He looks like a damn mass murderer

  30. disco says:

@ Kory – That might be a good thing. Our guys, apart from Watson, played like a bunch of schoolgirls last season when someone tried to push them around. I think Kaman would be a good backup C when we hopefully trade Jefferson.

  31. Chris says:

Oh Kam An!!! (Come on, get it? =/)

There’s no way we can add another ancient player with little remaining game. Have we seriously not learned our lesson from the Bell signing?

Also, the Blazers likely won’t match the Wolves offer since Batum has made it clear that he only wants to play in Minnesota. NY will match the Lin offer because Kidd only wants to play about 25 min per game and because Lin is worth well over 7m a year just in marketing value to the Asian market. Why do you think it’s the Rockets that made the offer? They’re the #1 most popular team in APAC because of all the years they had Yao, so they’re trying to retain and expand their profile in that market and sell merch to Asian consumers.
