Scrimmage

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

It was fun to go watch the Jazz scrimmage.

Kanter really stole the show, both before and during the game. He acted as MC for part of the time and showed off his dance moves this year. He’s not the shy young Turk from last year. He’s got a nice outside shot, with range, and makes his free throws. He is a lean, mean fighting machine. He gets up and down the court quickly and plays above the rim.

Burks played some point, alongside Gordon, very well. He can really push and handle the ball. At 6′6″ and Gordon at 6′8″, what a nightmare that would be for other teams! Gordon was smooth, with such a soft shot. This should be a breakout year for him.

Randy Foye got a lot of time at the point and pushes the ball very well. He can knock down the 3. He will be tough competition for Alec to get minutes.

Kevin Murphy can shoot the ball. He has such nice range. It looks like the 47th pick is lucky for the Jazz, because he should make the 3rd #47 pick on the Jazz this year. It seems like you’re either a lottery pick, or a #47 pick, if you play for the Jazz.

Marvin Williams has great size and is very fluid. He has a balanced, smooth shot. He looked good going to the hole a couple of times. His 6′9″ size is going to be matchup problems for other team’s SFs.

There wasn’t a flop the entire night. It’s nice to just watch basketball, instead of an acting job.

Toxic Raja is, of course, in exile and will probably remain there, unless he agrees to a buyout, which saves the Jazz some money, or is traded.

I’m excited for the year to get started!

Did anybody see that guy that walked onto the middle of the court and laid down aftter David Locke did his B.S.? Yeah, that was me. :)

  2. Omar says:

Thanks for the recap Jazzaholic! I was fixing to ask if someone could do that. Sounds exciting Burks at PG?! Nice! Did they run a lot of P&R against Al??? How did he defend?

Hey Colten, what happened?! Sounds funny, but Im not entirely sure what happened tho??

  3. Omar says:

Murphy does play the game a lot like Ray Allen, should be a great addition.

Just scroll til you see the video. Anywho Big Al didn’t play. I think every year they give 1 player a pass in the scrimmage, I think Milly sat out last year.

  5. Jazzaholic says:

It looked Big Al had a (ice/hot?) pack on his back and didn’t play, unless it was a few minutes at the start.

Ty is running more pick and roll. He seems to be allowing, but not really pushing the 3 point shot. He ran a zone for a few minutes.

With all the depth, where are the developmental minutes going to come from? That’s the problem with KOC doing too good a job. ;-)

If Kevin can play half as well as Ray Ray, he will be a stunning #47.

  6. Arnell says:

    Thanks for the recap, Jazzaholic. I was there too and the crowd was larger than last year and there excitement is abounding ;}

As Jazzaholic already described, Kanter is going to be a solid contributor this year. Gone is the flat-footed and deer-eyed Kanter. He is going to be great.

And the way both teams (Blue & White) handled themselves, also gone is the ISO with AL. By the way, AL & MO were there and participated in the Warm up drills BUT did not play. I saw MO next to Coach Corbin who was giving pointers.

Does anyone know why BOTH players did not play? Any speculation(s)?

Yes – I was excited when in the final 5-6 minutes that the White Team started the Core Five (Kanter, Favors, Carroll, Hayward, and Burks). The Coaching Staff now has seen the light ;} of the Jazz Future lies on these kids.

Lastly, why was Coach Jeff Hornacek not there tonight?

    Go Jazz!

  7. Lee says:

Big Al, Mo Williams, Millsap, and Watson do not play in the scrimmage because they were not 100%, soreness most likely. Al and Millsap started, but played less than a minute each before going to the bench to ice up.
If I remember correctly; Team White consisted of Kanter, Favors, Hayward, Burks, Carroll, Quinn, and Butch. Team Blue; Marvin, Evans, Foye, Murphy, Tinsley, Gilder, and Jackson.

  8. Omar says:

    Thanks for the info everyone!

HAHAHA Colten, your fn nuts!! Hahaha.

@Arnell, my head would have exploded when the Core 5 were on the court together!!

So super exciting. Counting down the days….

  9. Scrimmage was amazing. Second row! Amazing to see Sap, Al, Kanter, Faves, Hayward, Marvin, and Mo close up. It was a lot more intense and physical than I thought it was going to be. Hayward, Marvin, Burks, and Carrol all hit the floor hard at various times (Carroll even dived into the bench after a loose ball).
    Highlights for me:
*Kanter is a behemoth, and can dunk in traffic, set pics, and score off the roll. Extremely physical player, once he lowers his shoulder he is unstoppable. Made plays above the rim. Can run and jump much better.Definitely saw his mid-range jumper come out. Hits most his free throws. Gorgeous stroke.

*Randy Foye can play point guard. Even had a nice crossover. He can create his own shot, pass, distribute and even blocked a shot. I did not know Foye was this good! More importantly, he nailed some three pointers.

*Marvin Williams is extremely athletic, and extremely long. Blocked shots, made some alley-oops, hit some mid range jumpers. Excellent passer. Gets teammates involved.

*Kevin Murphy was the best shooter on the floor. Hit 3-4 three pointers, nothing but net (toe was on the line once or twice. Made two buzzer beater threes (almost, the second one was after the clock expired). Made a mid range shot and a floater. I was extremely impressed. KOC is really a genius–we have one of the steals of the very deep 2012 draft.

*Demarre Carrol’s shot has improved, but still isn’t great. Great hustler though, great competitive spirit.

*Alec Burk’s shot has also improved, but still isn’t as good as it is going to get. Burks had one of the best plays of the night–a fast break reverse slam dunk. Got the crowd on their feet. Plays with power and passion. Gets to the free throw line.

*Hayward was his usual self, doing a lot of subtle things that don’t cry out for attention but that benefit his team. As far as I know, every team that Hayward has been on in various scrimmages this week has won. That tells you a lot about the impact of Hayward. As usual, has a nice stroke and gets to the free three low line. Hayward and Burks have great chemistry when they’re on the floor together.

*Jamaal Tinsley is a stud. Can facillitate an offense, pass, get teammates involved. Blocked a shot and stole the ball a couple of times. In my opinion, he is far superior to Earl Williams (But he can’t alley-oop like Earl can. Because no one can.)

*Jeremy Evans didn’t have a whole lot of impact, but looks stronger and is more confident.

*Quinn did an excellent job running the point as well. Of all the unsigned guys, he impressed me the most. The big guy, Jackson also played well. Definitely a defensive force, very physical player. Very foul prone though, and not very athletic. Trey Gilder made a play or two, but overall nothing much to speak of. Whiteside was pretty much worthless.

There’s my recap. Excellent scrimmage. Feel bad for anyone that missed it!

  10. Whoops I meant to say Brian Butch was pretty much worthless. Don’t know where I got Whiteside from–maybe because he’s huge and white?

  11. Jazzaholic says:

I thought there were more there last year, but we arrived later last year and sat higher up.

Al and Mo just banged up. Earl still rehabbing.

    No report where Horney was.

    I wasn’t counting, but reported (5) 3s by Kevin.

Locke has a podcast on the scrimmage.

Enes learning the worm is just a little too late.

With the banning of flopping, he may not get to opportunity to display a flop, with the requisite snow angel and rendition of the worm.

  13. I am sure Millsap started and was getting beat by Favors on a couple plays so they sat him down. Al probably did not play cause they did not to have the fans see him get dominated either. That way when they do not play Favors or Kanter they can “say” they are better then those two.

  14. Jazzaholic, you’re right about Murph. LOVE this kid! Burks is going to have to learn how to shoot if he doesn’t this kid stealing his minutes…
Gordon Hayward led all scorers with 21 points, and Kevin Murphy was second with 18 points! 5 threes and a hoop and harm!

  15. Jazzaholic says:

I think Al and Mo just sat, because they are assured starters and Ty was more interested in seeing the rest of the players. They are supposed to start tonight.

It looks like the Jazz should trade up or down each year to get the #47 pick. ;-)
