“Lakers show interest in Raja Bell”
by Adrian Wojnarowski
2 hours 17 minutes ago
- With the hiring of Mike D’Antoni as coach, the Los Angeles Lakers are showing a renewed interest in acquiring exiled Utah Jazz guard Raja Bell, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Veteran guard Raja Bell last played for the Jazz last season. (AP)Bell, 36, has had strong advocates with general manager Mitch Kupchak and Kobe Bryant since the summer, but D’Antoni’s history coaching Bell with the Phoenix Suns has amplified discussion of signing the veteran guard should the Lakers create an opening on their roster.
With a $100 million payroll and $30 million in additional luxury-tax expenditures, the Lakers are unsure about cutting a player, paying his salary and then paying the additional salary ($1.3 million) and tax that it would take to sign Bell.

The Lakers have tried unsuccessfully for several weeks to trade bench players to create roster space.
“The biggest question is the taking on of more money,” a league source told Yahoo! Sports.
Bell is still under contract with the Jazz, but the team has allowed him to stay away this season until he finds a suitable offer and the two sides can execute a buyout. Once Bell has secured a contract for the veteran’s minimum elsewhere, the Jazz will buy out the difference on the remaining $3.5 million on his 2012-13 contract. Bell wouldn’t lose any money between the buyout and joining a new team.
Utah has allowed Bell and his agent, Herb Rudoy, to search out deals elsewhere. The Chicago Bulls have shown some interest in Bell, too, but haven’t made any offers, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
When his minutes and role diminished a year ago, Bell began to clash with Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin. Bell started 30 games for the Jazz a year ago, but his minutes steadily decreased over the season. Bell had long been considered a quality perimeter defender and a credible 3-pointer shooter, but several league executives, scouts and coaches wonder how much of that proficiency is still left in his game.
Bryant has been a proponent of acquiring Bell once he’s a free agent – and has communicated that to Bell, sources said – but Los Angeles signed shooting guard Jodie Meeks and absorbed several contracts in its trade for Dwight Howard.
Bell has been working out in his hometown of Miami, preparing for his chance to return to the league.”

This is probably what the HATED Lakers are looking to trade (instead of waive and pay):
Jodie Meeks
$1,400,000
Antawn Jamison
$1,352,181
Earl Clark
$1,240,000
Devin Ebanks
$1,040,000
Darius Morris
$937,195
Darius Johnson-Odom
$473,604
Robert Sacre
$473,604
Would the Jazz have any interest in any of those players?
These players would fit within Raja’s salary (but all have 2 years):
Steve Blake
$4,000,000
Chris Duhon
$3,680,000
Jordan Hill
$3,500,000
Perhaps Jordan Hill has some interest, but the HATED Lakers probably don’t want to trade him, because he’s getting some fairly effective PT.

Jamison would be good if we traded Al. Not sure what their rookies are like, does anyone know?
Antawn has looked pretty disappointing this year, from what little I’ve seen of him.
I doubt the Jazz take back a 2 year deal from the HATED Lakers, unless some draft picks and cash were thrown in. They’d probably be better off just letting Toxic Raja keep evening out his tan in Miami, until the end of the year.
Also, the Jazz don’t have any space to do a 2 for Raja deal and would have to buy out one of the players, at least.
All the listed players fall within the 150% + $100k trade rule and will work 1 on 1.

These players would work with the Bulls:
Richard Hamilton
$5,000,000
$5,000,000
Kirk Hinrich
$3,941,000
$4,059,000
Taj Gibson
$2,155,811
$7,550,000
$8,000,000
$8,500,000
$8,950,000
Marco Belinelli
$1,957,000
Nazr Mohammed
$1,352,181
Vladimir Radmanovic
$1,352,181
Nate Robinson
$1,146,337
Jimmy Butler
$1,097,520
$1,174,080
$2,119,214
$3,178,821
Marquis Teague
$857,000
$1,074,720
$1,120,920
$2,023,260
$3,034,800
These players all fall within the 150% + $100K rule and the Bulls have two open roster spots for a 2 for 1.
The Bulls also have 3 over paid players with long contracts:
Carlos Boozer
$15,000,000
$15,300,000
$16,800,000
Luol Deng
$13,326,700
$14,312,125
Joakim Noah
$11,050,000
$12,100,000
$13,150,000
$14,200,000
Are ya’ jus’ itchin’ ta get the Boozer back?

Morris and Clark were pretty good players coming into the draft.Morris is a true point guard. Nash will be broken up several times this year how about throwing in Tinsley??A little bit of light I hope they can get it done..Fakers have already played their only game in Utah this year so Bell could avoid the boooos.. Get it done.
On another front looks like Brandon Roy is the best businessman in the NBA.. Collection over sixty million on amnesty he signed on with the Wolves. He is out and looking at his arthuretic knees for retirement again. Were the Wolves stupid enough to a guarentee contract?? I like Roy and wish him the best but knees usually don’t come back..
if we get Jamison could be relly good…… a veteran is always welcome in a young team
Two years guaranteed
Brandon Roy
$5,100,000
$5,329,500
I think VanHorn got something like $6m to not report for NJ. At least Brandon played a few games.
Nice work (or not), if you can get it.

Here’s what we do. We’re not going to get anything of value for Raja Bell.
SO, we GIVE the Lakers Raja Bell in exchange for Jerry Buss and Mitch Kupchack publicly kissing Kevin O Connor’s ass at Energy Solutions Arena.
…And sell tickets.
WHO’S WITH ME?!?!
The Jazz won’t get anything of value for Toxic Raja, but the lakers have to get rid of a player, to make the trade. Perhaps they have 2 or 3 of equal poorness, which one fits the Jazz better, than the others.
They both are dumping unwanted players.
How badly do the HATED Lakers want him? Probably not very.
Tough to trade with two reluctant partners.

i am a fan of jordan hill, never hurts to get hustlers that play D.
and LOL Nick!
He’s probably on their keeper list.
If the deal was going to happen, it probably already would have, since the Jazz are tight lipped.
So, we’ll probably never see this deal, but it’s an interesting discussion anyway.
Jazzaholic
If Jazz have any chance at all to do this deal they should. Right now any player is better than what Bell is doing for the team. Let’s hope it happens Monday..(Throw in a happy meal to the fakers that should close the deal.!!)
What the Jazz would prefer would be a team wanting to sign Toxic Raja for a minimum and the Jazz just waive him, with a buyout agreement to pay the balance of the contract to him, so he can sign with the new team.
They would prefer an open roster spot, rather than a noncontributing player from a trade.
Jazzaholic
Fakers could also trade one of their lowest paid players for a second round pick to create a roster spot.
Draft picks have $0 value in trades.
I think with with the new CBA, you have to find a team under the cap or a TPE.
FAs can’t be traded for 90 days or Dec 15th.
A tax payer beyond the apron, like the HATED Lakers, have further restrictions.
So, I’m not totally sure they can, except under special circumstances.

Jody Genessy: Jazz are planning to assign rookie Kevin Murphy to D-League on Monday, pending severity of Mo Williams’ injury. Murphy did not travel.
I think Burks and possibly Pogo would be eligible to get some real playing time in the D League.
Jazzaholic
Burks and Evans might just as well go to the D-league. They sure aint gettin any minutes with Corbin. As poor as everyone played Saturday night what harm could they have done??
The only way they seem to get any time is in blow out wins.

First and foremost, the Lakers need defensive help on the wing and they need to strengthen their bench. For those reasons, league sources say D’Antoni is using whatever organizational capital he has to push for the signing of Raja Bell, whose agent, Herb Rudoy, is in the midst of buyout negotiations with the Jazz. Bell would immediately slow the wing penetration that is collapsing the Lakers’ defense and exposing their rotational deficiencies on the back side. He’s also a career 41 percent 3-point shooter who made a league-high 205 3-pointers in 2006-07 under D’Antoni in Phoenix. And Kobe wants him, so there’s that. CBSSports.com
The earliest we could see anything, would be after Dec 15th, when newly signed players come off trade restrictions.
