A possible trade

Posted by: Jazzbug on August 21st, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

So I just read this on ESPN:

The Sacramento Kings selected Jimmer Fredette with the No. 10 pick in the 2011 draft, however he might be traded at some point during his second season in the NBA.

The Kings signed Aaron Brooks this offseason and the starting point guard spot will come down to him and Isaiah Thomas. This will push Fredette down to the third-string point guard, which isn’t good for the player or team. The Kings will likely look to move Fredette and one of the best teams in the West reportedly likes him.

Sam Amico of FOX Sports Ohio writes: “Fredette would love to go someplace where someone other than just DeMarcus Cousins will pass him the ball. Thunder would love to pry Fredette away from Kings as replacement for Derek Fisher. Kevin Durant is a Jimmer fan.”

The Thunder are facing the luxury tax the next few years and if this report is true, they may ship Eric Maynor to the Kings for Fredette, or bring in a third team to complete a deal.

– Nick Borges

I’m thinking the Jazz step in as the third team. We can dump one Raja Bell and maybe a second round pick to the kings, Jimmer goes to OKC, and we receive Maynor. Granted the Kings get the short end of the stick but hey for all of you Utes at least I’m not saying to bring Jimmer here haha.

I have read this two different places. One was in the B/R report so their might be some truth to that rumor. I would like to see Raja Bell gone and Eric Maynor would be a very good addition to the team. The Jazz most likely would have to include one of the PG’s or waive one of them. But if there is a will there is away. Go Jazz

  2. Kevin says:

I would rather have Jimmer. I know it’s hard for fans of the University of Utah Pac-12’s, but Jimmer has more upside than Eric Maynor. However I think he would become the 3rd string PG even if he came here. Because if we want to get Foye and Burks into the game, they will probably have to split some PG minutes. Maybe we could convince the Kings to take Al AND Bell, and then we could open up the roster a little more.

  3. Dean Davies says:

@ Kevin, Al is an asset to be traded not a liability to be dumped. Maynor is worth more than Bell and a 2nd round but worth a lot less then Al.

I know lots of people think Al should be traded but he has a trade value. He is one of the best scoring centers in the league.

  4. Steven says:

I’m with Dean on this. I think Al is a very good player. I do feel the Jazz offense and especially the defense would be better off without Al. I do feel that with the number of contracts up at the end of next season we should look to do a trade to see what we may get for a good scoring center like Al rather than wait for the contract to expire.

That said he is an asset we don’t just give him away for nothing, he’s better than that. He might not lead to a fluid offense for his teammates but you know what Al is going to give you night out night in individually. You keep around until the right deal comes around, and if it doesn’t you keep him around until his contract expires and meantime use him in a way that makes the most of his skills. If the right deal doesn’t come around he could be used to start against weak defensive teams and as the 6th man against good defensive units, allowing the likes of Favors and Kanter time to develop their skills instead of being thrust into a situation they might not yet be ready for.

  5. Jake says:

The kings would not take a locker room cancer in raja bell even they are not that dumb

  6. Kevin says:

If you guys have read any other threads on here, you’d see that I do not feel that Al is a liability to be dumped. But sometimes in basketball you make trades for other reasons. In this situation, it would be improved cap space, better minute distribution, and we could get some decent picks out of the deal. There’s a lot to be considered if Al was involved in a trade. I’m not saying trade him just to trade him. I am saying look at your options, and make the deal that will improve our team in the long run.

    @Jake

Don’t give the Kings more credit than they deserve. They have Cousins and Tyreke Evans on the same roster. Pretty sure they don’t care about a solid locker room.

  7. Jazzbug says:

@Jake I have to also agree with Kevin. They have two pretty unstable personalities in their locker room already. I think the major fault of Raja was his thinking that he knew better than Ty. With a new situaion Raja may be alright with the Kings. I think the fact that his contract is ending would be somewhat attractive also.

  8. Omar says:

I agree with Kevin, the Jazz missed A TON of opportunities to get the best trade possible for Al, Bell, Watson, like when teams where dumping salary predtaft, trading to get into the draft, draft night trade, Joe Johnson trade (NOT FOR JJ, BUT TO FACILITATE), during FAgency and sign-and-tradrs, trade inlolving Dwight, Bynum, Iggy (not necessarily for those players, but to at least move our big money with big money movement)…Jazz have NO choice but to sell low now, cuz teams have already moved major contracts now they are adding pieces to finalized roster, so the ONLY possible trade is with Rockets who have a 22 man roster. Realistically, any trade outside of Rockets will be for picks and TE, and mmmaaaaaybe a young player with potential. Or Al walks for nothing.

  9. L.K.Anderson says:

Unless you are part of the front office how can you KNOW that the Jazz missed opportunities?? Jazz are not going to give someone away. Jimmer had way too much pressure on him his rookie season. With the Thunder he would be way down the list for playing time and might develope as the “dagger man.” That is where Steve Kerr got his rings..And for those of your that think that Bell is worth anything in a trade have another think a cummin.. The Jazz are loaded with guards now so Maynor or Jimmer would not fit in..

  10. Kevin says:

No one thinks Bell is worth anything in a trade. But almost every single trade that has ever occured has involved at least one “non-factor”.

  11. Shane says:

If we trade Big Al, what center are we going to bring in that’s better than him? Not too many options out there.

Maybe we look at a different option…are the Lakers really going to have a $99M payroll this year? Maybe they will. But if not, I think we got to make a run at Gasol and play him next to Favors. His passing and ability to add length but also stretch the floor would be a nice complement to Favors. Of course, Lakers have their center, so we’d need a third team to take Big Al that could also provide something back to LA. By the time Gasol’s contract is up, hopefully Kanter will be able to take over the starting position.

If we can’t get anybody of significant value then we need to keep Big Al. Even though he has his weaknesses on D, he’s a good scoring center that is better than a good portion of the alternative that’s out there.

  12. Omar says:

Hawks dumped 27M in salary. Raja had value, a 3.7M expiring, Big Al 15M, Watson. It was a perfect Opportunity to trade and get Marvin Williams while keeping Devin Harris as the back up PG. Jazz obviously were on the phone with the Hawks who wanted expiring contracts, yet we gave them Harris and didnt include Watson or Bell. Its a matter of deduction. There was a phone conversion with Hawks and Jazz, KOC, for whatever reason didnt even want to include Watson?! Come on, now. In facts Hawks waived about 5M of salary they got from Nets, so I KNOW the Hawks didnt much care about the talent being aquired cuz they waived a day or two later, wether the contract read Farmar or Watson, they just wanted expiring contracts. Jazz however gave them 9M for a player better than Al, Watson, or Bell. And no they didnt do this to get a PG, cuz they got Teague, AND signed FA Lou Williams. They werent trying to fill a roster spot as much as getting expiring money. Jazz missed this opportunity.

  13. Omar says:

Big Al walks for nothing at seasons end, or if Jazz trade him at deadline, Jazz would have spent training camp installing and about 4 months running an offensed centered around Al??? Thats not wise.

  14. silverwolf says:

All good posts. This is what I like in a form is people stating their opinion and others read its and then states their opinion. In this section everyone was respectful to others opinion.

I have posted about Big Al a few times. I think that Al and Sap are really starting to work well together. Al is passing out more now to an open man that has a better shot. It the Jazz can play as a team and let no ego’s get in the way, the Jazz will do well.

The only reason I would want to trade Al is that at the end of the season his contract is up and he may want more money than the Jazz can pay. I would much sooner seen the Jazz get something that can help the team now and in the future. Trading him the Jazz may take a small step backwards. So what is the answer to these questions that will have to be delt with now or later. Go Jazz

  15. Maynor for Freddette is a steal. Holding on to Big Al right now is perfect. We start the season solid and when the first big man somewhere in the league goes down with an injury we will be ready for the desperation trade.

  16. Omar big al is happy here i dont see him walking at the end of the season. As for the trade i could see it going down kings get raja which isnt much but, they do get draft picks which could help out jazz get maynor great backup pg and thunder get a project with jimmer. Everyone wins. I dont see the negatives everyone gets what they are looking for

  17. Dean Davies says:

The negative is its going to hard enough to give minutes to the players we have, if we get Maynor he will take minutes away from Burks and Foye.

  18. Kevin says:

    @Dean

I agree completely. That’s exactly why it could be good to trade Al if we get something decent in the way of draft picks. Because like @Shane said, even though there isn’t an available Center out there right now that’s better….it opens up the Roster a bit and allows for more flexibility. Put Favors at C and we don’t lose much on offense, yet significantly improve on D.

I am okay either way though. I DO NOT want to trade Al just for the sake of trading him. I would rather keep him and try to re-sign him at seasons end. If he walks, it would suck but it also wouldn’t be the first time that has happened.

  19. Omar says:

@Trevor, I dont think Al would walk away cuz he doesn’t like Utah, but the reality is that thr Jazz cannot afford Al. 16M is what he will command, and considering the horrible contacts just given out for bigs, Al will get an offer for that amount. That will absolutely break the Jazz’s back. If Jazz sign Hayward and Favors it will be around 10-15M, Id say closer to 15M for Favors, Hayward Im guessing 12M. So between Al, Favors, Hayward, Evans 3M, Burks, 2.5M, Kanter, 4.5M, Jazz will be at 53M. That leaves about 6M to sign at least 6 players. No Millsap?! Jazz CANNOT keep Al and Millsap and C4. Wed have a salary like the Lakers. Plus, when exactly are we suppose to develop Kanter?! We invested the 3rd pick on him, and if we keep Al we won’t be able to play him more than 13 minutes without taking away minutes from Al, Favors, and Millsap. Plus keeping Al and Millsap takes minutes away from the SF position, forcing Hayward to get all his minutes at SG, forcing Burks about 10 minutes less; so basically, Kanter and Burks will be expected to develop playing about 10 minutes a game?!

Millsap or Al has to go. Millsap is about 45% cheaper, awwweaayyyy better defender, the heart of the Jazz, drafted by the Jazz, has wwwaaayy more playoff experience than Al. Millsap has played in more elimination games than Al has played in playoff games. This is a no brainer trading Al, the sooner the better. Watson and Bell are useless but they wont play. Al disrupts the salary cap payroll, signing our young players, playing time, defensive rotations, keeping Millsap.

Remember, Keon Clark and Ben Handlogten, a few years later turned into Gordon Hayward. Trade Al already. You have to project into the future.

  20. jack says:

@ Omar, you are absolutely right.
“Al disrupts the salary cap payroll, signing our young players, playing time, defensive rotations, keeping Millsap.”

@ Trevor, if we trade Bell for Maynor is good for the Jazz, next year Watson and Tinsley are gone, and Mo/Maynor are a good PG, the present and the future for the jazz at PG spot.

  21. Dean Davies says:

@Jack, Maynor is no where near good enough to be the future starting PG, a future backup PG is more likely. Plus it would take more then Bell and a 2nd round pick to get Maynor, Bell has a massive negative trade value and some 2nd round picks might not get a spot of a team.

Getting rid of Al will create more playing time but it has to be for a good deal, I know Omar has suggested lots of trades but maybe those teams didn’t want Al or some other unknown reason.

  22. Omar says:

As much hell as we give players for not being loyal, its gotta work both ways. Jazz should be loyal to Millsap. I really think him not signing the extension is not a money issue. Millsap has a lot of pride, he wants to play PF and not SF, and he deserves 30 minutes. Hes not getting either with Al there. It would be a shame if the Jazz lost Millsap cuz they didnt show him that loyalty in a year were he went from 32 Minutes to 28, and half the minutes at SF. Thats the wrong message.

  23. Al doesnt like utah omar where did you hear that he doesnt like utah in all his interviews all he says is. He loves utah he is so happy to play for a playoff team. I like both guys but, it has nothing about being loyal its a business you do whats best for you business plain and simple and, you cant convince me that sap is better then al. That and favors is a pf not a center so if a trade is made it has to be milsap because of his inconsistency and favors needs to play. Heck get rid of both of them and get a new center like a brook lopez and a few other players that would be my choice.

  24. disco says:

Omar is correct with all his reasons. The Jazz basically couldnt afford him and secure a decent future. I like Jazzed uponit’s suggestion with the desperation trade. Those who say that we need to get a better player than Al in a trade really don’t understand why we need to trade him. The only reason not to trade him is if we dont think Kanter is going to be any good.

  25. Omar says:

@Trevor, that not what I meant. I was saying that unlike Howard where Magic could play him the most money and Howard wanted out cuz he didnt like Orlando, Al is not going to walk away cuz he doesn’t like Utah, but because there is no money on the table.

If Jazz sign Al to more than a one year contact, and resign Favors and Hayward, in year 2 off Als contract, Jazz will have 53M in Al, Favors, Hayward, Burks, Kanter, and Evans, so theyll have 6M to sign 6 players. With no Marvin, no Mo, no Millsap. So in 2 years Jazz will have the same roster but losing Marvin, Mo, Millsap, and NO flexibility and be over the cap. If its a three year deal for Al, Jazz will have same roster they do now but without Mo, Marvin, Millsap and will need to resign Burks and Kanter already over the cap—wed lose both. So basically by keeping Al we will have the roster we have now and get progressively worse each year:
If Al signs 3 year deal at 16M with raises…
At the end of this year = Millsap, Mo
At the end of Al year 1 = Marvin
At the end of Al year 2 = Burks and Kanter
And every year be over the cap.

The Heat won the championship playing Bosh at the 5, and Battier at the 4. In the West Jazz have to go through Westbrook/Harden, Nash, Parker/Ginobili, and CP3, Jazz wont get out of the first round with Al getting 34 minutes and then in the off-season Jazz will get worse each year losing player and being over the cap and having to settle for D leaguers and vet minimums to fill roster, and lose 2 of the core four, who havent developed cuz of Al.

When I get a chance Ill post some stats of Millsap > Al.

@Disco I agree desperation trade to lose: addition by subtraction. First team to give me to unprotected 1st and its a deal. Like Dallan suggested, Id love to steal Monte..something (7′0) from Rockets.

  26. silverwolf says:

That is Donatus Margiejunus. I would love to get him also and Jermey Lamb. Then maybe a 1st rounder for Jefferson. I like him but B/R has articles on him that the Jazz will not beable to stay under the cap if they resign both Milsap and Jefferson. I would love to see the Jazz get some good young players if they have to trade him to stay under the cap. Go Jazz

  27. Omar says:

Ya silverwolf, Ive read McHale saying he doesn’t want to get younger: there 21 man roster only has 5 players over 25 years old, and ZERO players 30+ years!! Houston might even want Watson! Theres a trade there, and theyd probably want expiring contracts to sign Major FAs in offseason. Lamb and Donatus would be awesome.
