5 Off Season Questions (other than the obvious)….5 Months Early

With the All-Star break upon us, the playoffs and offseason will be here in no time.  Here are 5 off-season questions other than obvious questions around Big Al & Milsap….5 Months Early

  1. What will DeMarre Carroll’s market value be?  I think a logical offer would be 2 years/$2.5M per year.  Would that keep him here?
  2. What will Randy Foye’s market value be?  He’ll require more money and a longer contract to stay in Utah (even though he likes it here).  I’d guess 3 years/$3.5M per year.
  3. Assuming the Jazz target a PG in the draft, who do they go after? Marcus Smart looks like the most talented PG available, but will the Jazz have a high enough pick to get him?
  4. Are these the last days for Watson and Tinsley as Jazz men, or will one of them be re-signed?
  5. Who will be the #1 free agent target for the Jazz this summer?

  1. I think we can retain Carroll for a good price because he more under the radar than Foye. Foye for 3 yrs? Idk But I like him! Ill be very angry if we bring back Tinsley or Watson! I know the Jazz are all about cheap veterans, but dont make this mistake again. spend some $$. Bring back Mo(cheaper) for back-up and sign or draft a solid pg. Or better do both!

  2. KCJones says:

Teams can use the mid-level exception (or mini-mid-level exception if they are too high in salary) to sign a player. I think it’s around $6M and $3M, respectively. So contending teams out there might offer something like that to him, who knows.

  3. KCJones says:

Also Tinsley or Watson would make a great 3rd PG in case of injury to your 1st or 2nd. The problem is Corbin thinks they’re both starters.

  4. Shane says:

KC – I agree that Tinsley or Watson could be retained but only as a third option. However if we pick up a PG in the draft, that person could be the #2 or #3 option….sharing PG duties with Burks.

  5. Steven says:

1 and 2 – Considering Jeremy Evans is sitting on the bench for $5.5m for the next 3 years, I think Carroll and Foye should expect to get around $3m – $3.5 a season considering what they both offer the team. Teams are going to love what both players can do. Unfortunately Carroll might have been under the radar when KOC picked him up, but I bet teams around the league have taken notice now. Teams like the Spurs love players like him. The Jazz need to keep him. Foye too.

3 – I suspect the team will look to draft either Smart or Trey Burke, if they have the option.

4 – Tinsley I think is gone. Watson, may stay on in a coaching role or even be held on as the 3rd PG to help the second unit of players next season. We have to remember he has no offensive threat of his own, but his second unit has continuously outscored the opposition since the day he arrived here. This year he has a better rounded group of players, but that first season he had to work with the likes of Fesenko and Francisco Elson and yet that unit of players was still able to get the Jazz back into games after first quarter slow starts by the first five. Watson may not be the most skilled player but he has an intangible that gets the best of his men, and that might be worth keeping an a limited role.

5- Not a freakling clue. I cannot read the direction of the Jazz FO, I can only hope that Jefferson, Tinsley, Bell and Evans are turned into one or two players that really give the core four the tools to take the next step up. With having 3 draft picks this summer, those 4 players could be used on getting just one very good player here.

    1. DeMarre has been a great option for us this year. I think that the Jazz definitely want to keep him. Seeing that Jeremy Evans received a 3 year 5.5 million dollar contract, look for DeMarre to receive something similar, but as he actually plays a bit higher. I’d go for a 3 year 9 million dollar deal. That is 3 million a year. Pretty good value for a player who does so many things right for our team.

    2. Foye says that he wants to be in Utah long term. With that being said, he has raised his stock significantly here. Luckily, two guards get screwed on salary compared to bigs so a 2 year deal at 6 million (3 a year) should keep him in a jazz uniform.

    3. Seeing where the Jazz first round picks will be, the choices are Point Guard will be limited, but my favorite PG in the draft is Trey Burke, who is slated to go around the time we will pick. He is a quick guard who can shoot the ball! Also, he’s averaging over 7 assists a game this season while turning the ball over very little. He would do great backing up Mo or a similar vet for two seasons and then taking over the team.

    4. With Alec Burks looking like a viable option at the Point for some matchups, I do not see Tinsley or Watson being re-signed. Mo or another vet will be our starter next year with a drafted guard as the primary backup. Burks will be combo guard who plays point when needed, but mostly plays at the 2.

    5. The #1 free agent target for the Jazz will probably be our own Mo Williams. If he is healthy, the Jazz love his game, and he loves it here. I see a 2 – 3 year deal where he can lead the team into the new era (Post Al/Paul era). That is contingent on drafting a point guard to be groomed by him.

    6. Other than a point guard (Trey Burke) I hope the Jazz draft Patric Young from Florida. He is a Power Forward with an excellent body. He can fill the Millsap void. Then pickup Fesenko for funsies!

  7. Patrick says:

1 has been answered and I think most are pretty close. Would love to keep him.

    2. you could probably add a year to Foyes contract for 3 yrs.

    3. I would be happy with Trey burke. If we could turn in one guy who is likely to leave into Otto Porter and Burke it would be a successful draft.

    4. You can drop both, since if things work out, we wont need either.

    5. Its a toss up for Mo, Foye, and Millsap/Al whoever is left. I think retaining all 3 is pretty important. I say 3 because I know that you cannot keep both Millsap and Al.

  8. L.K.Anderson says:

Carroll wants to stay and with bird rights cold get the better contract. Unless Portland screws it up.
A 9 mil three year for Foye would fit in nice.
I say the Jazz should go after a point guard. Maybe even trying to trade both picks to move up. Looks like Jazz and GS pick will be close together.
If Mo stays and with Burks learning the trade there should be no need for Watson/Tinsley. That alone opens up two roster spots.
If Sap is not traded try to keep him. He has shown his worth. Try a smaller stretched out contract (5yrs)..

  9. Omar says:

    1) DC= 3YR, 9M

    2) Foye = 2YR, 12M (contenders are going to come after him)

    3) Jazz have 4 draft picks in 2013, Id package and move up to get number one PG, or Id stand back and draft the two best remaining PGs, and hope one becomes a stud. 2nd round draft frontcourt depth.

    4) resign Tinsley as a 3rd PG (Watson can become a coach but NO way is he playing for Jazz

    5) if no trade of Sap; 2YR, 20M (then when its time to resign Kanter and Burks, he signs for a heck lot less or he leaves 4YR, 20M to be bench player)

  10. Steven says:

Millsap won’t sign for a 2 year $10m a season deal. He’s going to get a 4 year deal elsewhere. I’d rather see him get a 4 year deal worth somewhere between $32 and $36m, and then trade him on after 2 years if he was no longer necessary than lose him for nothing, which is exactly what you will get if you over him 2 years. When he was offered a 3 year deal in the summer, I don’t think it was the yearly amount he was offered that led to him turning it down. It was more to do with if he signed this summer coming he could get an extra year than what the Jazz could offer previously. Also if he signed this year, Corbin would have continued to play Jefferson big minutes in a contract expiring year but Favors might have found more time on the floor at Paul’s expense. Paul will probably be happy to share time on the bench as long as time between the bigs is going 3 ways, but 4 ways does not fit.

  11. Omar says:

NO FOYE IN SHOOTOUT?! WTF!! Come on! NBA no love for Jazz. Its all on Evans!

  12. marty says:

I think Carroll might cost a little more than that. I’m thinking 3yrs 10 mill. Foye will be even more about 5-6 mill per year and not sure the Jazz should pay that much when his minutes could go to Burks and our draft picks. If the Jazz keep Tinsley or Watson it should be because they don’t resign Mo. If we keep Mo then Tinsley and Watson must go. As far as free agents go look at Millsap and Mo for the right price. Other than that I wouldn’t give a max/near max deal to any free agent out there including B. Jennings.

PG in the draft for Jazz

    1) Marcus Smart
    2) Michael Carter-Williams
    2B)Trey Burke
    3) Nate Wolters
    3B)Ray Mccalum

Smart, Carter-Williams, and Burke are the three highest rated point guards and very likely could be gone unless the Jazz move up in the draft. For some reason I like the 2 small school point guards and wouldn’t be dissapointed if we spent one or both of our first round picks on them

  13. John says:

would be pretty funny to have fesenko and kanter on the same team

  14. Steve says:

    1) The jazz have to give carroll a better deal than what they gave evans last year. I would say 2-3 yr deal for 3 mil a year, is a good offer.
    2) Foye is going to demand a bigger deal, shooting comes at a premium in the league. I say he looks for something in the range of 3 yrs 12-15 mil.
    3) I’m a big marcus smart fan, i love watching him play because, plain n simple, the guy is winner. Not a sg or pg, he’s a winner, always makes the right play at the right time. I think he’s gone well before we are on the board. I think Trey Burke, pg from michigan, will be available and i would love that pick.
    4) Both are leaders, so one will be back. i think Watson is gone. Tinsley has proved he has more left in the tank.
    5) I’m not sure of one particular player, but i think we will be hearing about PGs visiting with jazz brass quite often.
