Training Camp – what questions do you have?
Posted by: Shane on September 25th, 2012
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.I think there are some obvious goals for the Jazz in the up-coming training camp. First and foremost is the rotations. Will Corbin start Millsap? Will Hayward start at the 2 or the 3? Who is in shape? Can Kanter command 20 minutes a game? How can the Jazz become an elite defensive team?
Lots of questions. What answers would you like to see coming out of training camp?
Like everyone else, I’m naturally curious at how the players look coming into camp. Has Favors worked on his mid-range game at all? Can Kanter pick up his speed more than he did in summer league?
The question I’d like to see answered (and we may not have it until game 35 of the season), is whether Foye can play PG for this team. If he can fill the back-up roll efficiently, I think it opens up a lot of options and takes away a bit of a log-jam at the 2 spot. If he can, the next question is if that makes Watson or Tinsley vulnerable to a roster move.
What is the #1 question you all would like to see answered coming out of camp?

I want to see what color of hair Fess shows up with. OH wait he is not here anymore.
Really I hope that Bell is gone. And who and if the Jazz will fill his spot with the fifteenth player. At least this year they are not having Mcbrick fill a spot.Looks like they have invited three players.
My number one question is who will comprise the starting lineup, and how will Corbin handle the rotation off the bench.
I personally think it’s going to be extremely difficult for Ty to bench Favors or Millsap, so I wouldn’t be surprised, if at least to begin the year, he starts the same BIG lineup that he ended the playoffs with.
Jefferson – Center
Favors – Power Forward
Millsap – Small Forward
Hayward – Shooting Guard
Mo Williams – Point Guard (in place of Devin Harris)
I think and this is just me thinking/hoping this is the case that the FO is waiting to see what Kanter,Evans,Favors come into training camp looking like. They are going to see if Foye can play the one as a backup or if he can not handle it. When they see these things and make a decision then a move will be made to adjust to those things. Ala the Okur trade last year.
So since you asked for a question: What will the Jazz roster look like AFTER training camp and the pre season has come to a close? I bet it is different I just do not know if it is small or large different.
My second unit (everybody playing around 18 minutes per game on average):
Center – Kanter
Power Forward – Evans
Small Forward – Marvin Williams
Shooting Guard – Burks
Point Guard – Foye (if he shows he can run the offense)
I don’t anticipate any major moves. I figure Bell will be unloaded in one manner or another, so as not to become a distraction to the team. I think they will probably carry 14 players on the active roster, so they have some flexibility moving forward.
Actually, I think Marvin Williams will probably play more significant minutes, which means less time for Evans. I didn’t mean to group him into the “18 minute per night group” above…my bad.
In fact, I am more curious to see what Marvin brings to the table then any other player on the roster.
My biggest ? is Marvin Williams. I at least have an idea what to expect from most of the other guys but Marvin is still very much up in the air. If he really stand out through camp it could force Ty’s hand and move Paul to the bench. We’d all really like to see Marvin realize more of his potential now that he’s in a new situation and I think he could be a huge piece for the Jazz this year. Bigger than most people expect.
I guess my question is a bunch of questions all lumped into one. Will all the young guys take that next step in order for the Jazz to be a competitive team against the Heat, Grizzlies, OKC (all teams I think they will be competing with for championships in the next 5 years).
Will Burks develop another part of his game other then quick slashes and unbalanced shots? (maybe a consistent jumper would be nice)
Will Kanter gain more confidence in the post? (Go up when you get the rebound under the rim!)
Will Gorden figure out how to consistently be that dominate player we all have seen?
Will Favors take the “go to guy” spot from Big Al and become the leader of the team so we can all stop talking about “potential”?
I guess those are all the question I’ve got. And please I can’t watch another season of terrible defense from Big Al. Maybe this will be the camp where they teach how to move his feet.
How much better will the young players get? We need them to get a hell of alot better to give us any shot at a title in the next 3-5 years.
Hahaha @Garrett! My sentiments exactly!
@Dallan I totally agree, Jazz want to confirm what they already know, as evident by Evans contract and Millsap being offered an extension, and signing Murphy to make the roster 15, plus inviting at least 3 addition players. Jazz always find guys at camp or in the camps of other teams, so Jazz need flexibility. A trade is eminent. Crossing my fingers.
I want to see the offense. I really hope the Jazz run a more movement base offense. I want to see what Murphy brings. He did score 50+ last year.
Kanter, Kanter, Kanter. He looks like hes ready to play ball. He’s fit as hell, so maybe that will help with his confidence.
Burks. I think Burks is gonna be fantastic! I really want to see him trust his teammates and let them help shoulder the scoring load. I dont want him to be any less confident though.
And the keyword I want to hear is DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE. I want to see how important D is for Corbin and the FO.
Minutes. More specifically, I think one of the biggest things that will effect the minute distribution will be where Foye fits in. I think it will be ideal if he can play back up PG. If not, we have some problems that trickle all the way down from the wing to the post. Especially if Sap plays any SF. As it stands, I think the rotation would look something like this:
PG-Mo-30min/Foye-18min
SG-Hayward-22min/Burks-20min/Foye-4min
SF-Marvin-27min/Hayward-10min/Sap-11min
PF-Favors-30min/Sap-20min
C-Al-32min/Kanter-16min
That leaves Evans, Tinsley, Watson, Carroll, and Murphy as DNP’s until injuries pop up or a trade occurs.
Also, I just wanna say I think we are going to really like Marvin Williams. He’s a huge upgrade from CJ or Josh. Big, athletic, shot a good percentage from 3 last year. I think he will be a solid starter for us.
Bracken – I like the minute distribution you noted. If we can get close to that, I think we’ll be a pretty solid, deep team. The only thing I’d like to see is Kanter getting a couple more minutes, maybe 20….that is, if he earns those minutes. He needs to be ready to take those extra minutes from Big Al.
Will Corbin let Kanter show his jump shot?
Does Corbin have any idea as a head coach?
Will Corbin change the offense ?
- Bracken I like your minute distribution but it still should be flexible depending on match-ups
Shane and Disco- I agree with both of you on the minutes. If Kanter is ready, by all means lets get him closer to 20. And yeah Disco, I guess I was just thinking averages overall.
Want to see if the big mens game allow our new additions to continue shooting well from the outside. If they do well from the outside, it will likely spread defenses out creating easier work in the paint. If it balances out like it should, we can have another surprising break out season. It may take a bit longer to determine than just a bit longer than training camp to tell, but it could be a lot more interesting than who will start.
