Playing time

I love the players the jazz have added.  So far a solid off season!  But now with all this talent how would you split of the playing time?  Randy Foye can play either guard position, but we have many at both positions.  Marvin Williams should be a starter, but does that make Hayward come off the bench and slow down his growing?  And Burks I think will have a great year and should be considered to start.  Here is how I would split it up.. I would love to hear from all of you!

PG – Mo Williams, Randy Foye, Earl Watson
SG – Hayward, Burks, Foye, Murphy
SF – Marvin Williams, Hayward, Carroll
PF – Millsap, Favors (tough to do… but as long as Sap is on the team he earned the starting spot), Evans
C – Jefferson, Kanter, Favors

  1. Omar says:

I think Burks is a better PG than Foye. But either way they are getting minutes at the PG.

    Marvin 30, Hayward 18
    Hayward 12, Foye/Burks 36
    Mo 30, Foye/Burks 18

Burks and Foye about 27 minutes each.

  2. disco says:

@Omar – I don’t think we know how good Burks will be at the point quite yet. I believe Marvin can get some time at PF if we get rid of either Millsap or Al. I’d like to see Murphy get some time as well.

@Josh – Favors can no longer start on the bench

  3. PG- Mo and Tinsley
    SG- Foye and Burks
    SF- Hayward and Williams
    PF- Favors and Millsap
    C- AL and Kanter
I don’t see Burks realistically getting time at the PG, but I’d like to see him and Mo on the court to play off one another. Burks could bring the ball up sometimes and Mo other times.
I don’t see Hayward getting much time at the SG either with Foye and Burks on the roster.
I think training camp will decide who starts at the SG and SF spots, between Burks/Foye/Hayward at the SG and Carroll/Hayward/Williams at the SG. Because Carroll is a great player that brings a lot of energy and hustle, something many other players on the Jazz don’t bring.
The Jazz got lots better this off season. We are looking like a very deep team.

  4. Hayward isnt starting at the two especially since we got randy its either going to be randy or burks hayward will start at the 3 spot williams will come off the bench and disco is right favors cant keep coming off thee bench. He has earned the right to start. So pauls going to have to except that or leave

  5. Matt Webb says:

I’ll freak out if Favors isn’t starting.
Favors will freak out if Favors isn’t starting.
The NBA will freak out if Favors isn’t starting.

  6. Dave Leeky says:

Hmmm… tough one perhaps something like this?

    PG – Williams / Burks / Tinsley
    SG – Hayward / Foye
    SF – Williams / Carroll
    PF – Favors / Millsap
    C – Jefferson / Kanter

    Additionals – Murphy / Evans / Watson

I’ve tried to suggest something no one else has to see what the feeling is. The above line-up is based on the following assumptions:

    Favors starts.
    They won’t bench Jefferson.
One of Tinsley or Watson will be traded.
Jazz coaches see Hayward as a 2.
Hayward/Burks/Williams/Foye can all play a number of positions once the rotation starts.
I don’t see Williams getting time at PF (unless Al is traded).

I think a trade is brewing. The above contains 14 players. The Jazz normally carry 13 don’t they? So that would make sense as someone in a different blog was saying that they might do a 2-for-1 or 3-for-2.

  7. disco says:

@Matt – That’s lots of people freaking out

  8. JRN5150 says:

I dont think Murphy cracks our rotation this year. I bet he is a D-league guy or get 20+ DNPs this year.

  9. Justin says:

@JRN5150 – You might be right. Didn’t the Jazz just become an D-League affiliate where they hadn’t been for a year or two? Thought I saw an article on that a few weeks back. That could be why.

  10. We have 15 under roster right now with Bell.

Not sure what Watson status is or what it will be but there are teams that need backup PG we just need to be patient. Houston needs one all they have is Lin. They have Machado who they will probably sign but still. They need a vet. Boston needs a vet as well. We shall see hopefully a trade is in the works. You can add as much talent as you want but if you continue to not develop the youth it will not matter we won for these couple of years and made the 8th seed when they walk because we mishandled them

I like the signing just hope it means more is coming.

  11. Dave i dont think the coaches see hayward as a two he played much better when he was at the thre spot. He can shut down small forwards but, some shooting guards he has problems with.
It kind of seems like they are prepping for a bigger trade then just a earl or tinsley i think milsap is gone for some one. And maybe foye wont stick around either i could see him being throw in with sap to get a great two guard. I do like the line up though a few week spots but, a strong bench good starting five, you have guys you can put in a bunch of diffrent positions and, you have a great mix of guys that can scored and play defence.
Sad to say but, we better say good bye to cj and josh it was fun watching them with us

  12. Dave Leeky says:

    @ trevor

Interesting, but I bet they go with Hayward as the starting 2. It would also seem strange to bring in Marv Williams on $8.3m this year and a player option of $7.5m for 2012-3 if he’s only going to be a bench player. So unless there is a trade between now and the start of the season, I see my above line-up as being set. Burks first guard off the bench (PG or SG).

I’d think Watson will leave and Murphy will end up in the D-League.

  13. Jupit Crush says:

Clearly Foye is the missing piece for a Dwight Howard trade. ha

  14. Chris says:

I think our starters are Williams, Hayward, Williams, Millsap and Jefferson, and we go from there. Foye comes in at the 2 midway through the first, then Hayward plays the 3 on the second unit, and Burks and Foye share the 2 on the second unit and occasionally are played together in the backcourt with Burks the primary ballhandler; Foye is a fair off-guard distributor with about a 2-1 Ast/TO ratio and 4-5 assists per 36 min, but nothing close to PG production. IMPORTANT NOTE – this is just what I expect will be done, not what I’m actually hoping for, because in this setup either Favors or Millsap is slighted.

    What I think will happen:

1- Mo W 32, Burks 10, Ham Sandwich 6 (Tinsley or Watson, but I think a ham sandwich would probably be a better PG than either of them)
    2- Hayward 17, Foye 26, Burks 5
    3- Ma W 32, Hayward 16
    4- Millsap 32, Favors 16
    5- Jefferson 33, Kanter 10, Favors 5

What I would HOPE to happen:

    1- Mo W 32
    2- Hayward 33
    1/2 – Foye 18, Burks 13
    3- Ma W 32, Millsap 16
    4- Favors 31, Millsap 17
    5- Jefferson 32, Kanter 16

    Totals on that would be
    Millsap & Hayward 33
    Jefferson, Williams, & Williams 32
    Favors 31
    Foye 18
    Kanter 16
    Burks 13

Basically, Hayward leads the team in minutes played like he did in the late part of last season, and our top 6 players are getting the majority of the minutes. The announced starters are Williams x2, Hayward, Favors and Jefferson, but Millsap ends up playing basically the last 6 min of the 1st and 3rd and last 10 min of the 2nd and 4th. It’s important that Millsap is among our closers.

  15. Steven says:

Omar I like Burks penetration and impact in games but I’ve yet to see him play the team game enough to suggest that he is an NBA PG. Until he starts to worry about himself less and involve his teammates more in his plays then I think he will remain a SG for the forseeable future.

I like Carrol’s hustle plays but I wonder now if there is much room for him to stick around and get reasonable minutes.

  16. Josh says:

One thing i just realized too is that Murphy is not guaranteed a contract.. he was in the second round. I doubt he is on the roster.

  17. Adam says:

The way I see it is that we have many guys who can play multiple positions and can get playing time not just in one spot, but many. The league has gotten more and more versatile over time where there aren’t very many players who are a no-brainer at any position. Most players can survive and be effective at multiple postions. Such as Mo Williams, Randy Foye, Alec Burks can all play the 1 and 2. Gordon Hayward can play 2 and 3. Marvin Williams and Paul Millsap both play 3 and 4. And one can debate that Al Jefferson and Derrick Favors can play the 4 and 5. I see it shaping out like this but with most players being able to float through the positions seemlessly:

    PG: Mo Williams, Randy Foye
    SG: Gordon Hayward, Alec Burks
    SF: Marvin Williams, DeMarre Carroll
    PF: Derrick Favors, Paul Millsap
    C: Al Jefferson, Enes Kanter

Now obviously I have left out some people on our roster, but these are the guys who are getting the majority playing time. The other guys are just fill ins. I think placing people in one position kinda limits our options but realizing the versatality in our roster will let us try various combinations of players throughout training camp.

  18. If you want to know who is going to start, look at how much money the Jazz are committed to paying them.

    PG: Mo Williams – $8.5, Burks $2.1, Foye ?, Watson $2.0, Tinsley $1.3
    SG: Hayward – $2.7, Burks $2.1, Foye ?
    SF: Williams – $8.3, Millsap – $7.2, Hayward – $2.7
    PF: Millsap – $7.2, Favors – $4.7, Evans – ?
    C: Jefferson – $15.0, Kanter – $4.4

I don’t see the Jazz giving any player substantially more minutes to players that make more money at their position. This is why Burks isn’t going to get many minutes, and Millsap will probably still start half the games this year. I don’t like it, but it seems to be how the Jazz operate.

  19. Correction, I see the Jazz organization giving out more minutes to the players that they pay more money to.

  20. Chris you want Burks to get 13 minutes a game? Are you kidding me? Why did we draft him then? He has proven he should get more then 13 minutes a game!

The person this hurts is Kanter. Because now instead of millsap getting minutes at the three he will only get his minutes at the 4. While Favors gets his at the 4 and 5 so this leaves Kanter with 6 minutes which is less then he got last year!! Woo so glad we have the best GM in the league who thinks about these things… Oh wait.

I hope something else is coming or within two years this young core we have will be gone and we will be here with a late lottery pick and never get better. If the young guys do not get the minutes they should and deserve to get there are going to be some upset players and the locker room will be divided by the all star break.

  21. disco says:

I have a novel idea. Why don’t we see who is playing the best at various times throughout the season and get them to play the most minutes. If you’re not performing you shouldn’t get the minutes. I know that Corbin would rather play players based on the amount of NBA games played but I believe that decent coaches would disagree with that philosophy

  22. You have to play your best players. We tried to trade up in the draft and failed, the only player teams would have traded a high draft pick for is Favors. Not Al, Not Sap, Not Hayward. Either Millsap or Al will be coming from the pine this year.

  23. Chris says:

Dallan, if Burks could play even passable defense, I’d be all about him getting more minutes. The fact of the matter is he’s still really bad on that end of the floor.

  24. KCJones says:

    @Jared

For players on a rookie deal, their salary isn’t necessarily their NBA market value. For instance, Favors would probably be getting paid $8-$13M right now on the open market. Maybe more, with how ridiculous some GMs are. But I bet he would get more than Millsap, giving his current production, age and potential.

All that was to say Favors should start over Millsap, regardless of his lower salary.

  25. I think that Millsap has done more to earn a starting spot then anyone else on the team and it would be a joke if Favors didn’t start so bench Big Al. Ya he’d get angry about it but I don’t really care if he’s angry I think he should go anyways. Maybe he would start moving his feet on defense after a wake up call on the bench.

  26. @Chris HE WAS A ROOKIE!!! One of the hardest things for players to get coming out of college is defense. Very few people just come in from college and play incredible defense. He has the ability. Also your going to use that as an excuse but give Jefferson 32 hahahahahahaha

@Ryker No one is owed or deserves anything in the NBA. Favors is the future PF and Millsap is not. I wish Al was just gone yes I admit that but if he is not you think Corbin is going to put his “precious” on the bench?

  27. Chris says:

Well, here we go again. Dallan, you’ve already been shown plenty of empirical evidence (from JRN’s posts and mine) to indicate that Jefferson was in the top 10 defensive centers when it comes to guarding his man. He is often a liability against pick-and-roll sets, yes, we get it, you can quit spouting your same old garbage already. Burks is poor in every facet of the defensive game, and it’s not like he’s some sort of exceptional offensive asset to make up for it. “Your”{sic} not making yourself look very imaginative at this point. Maybe you should find some actual data to support, well, literally anything you say. It’s not that hard to find data that’s relevant to conversations about NBA players, as many of the blog posts on UJ360, most of mine included, have shown.

  28. Well I am glad you can say I need to find something to prove my point when all you say is Burks is bad at defense. Did you show a stat? Did you show anything to prove that? I have shown multiple things about why Al is not the player everyone thinks he is. Also Foye and Mo are not AMAZING defenders. And Foye who shoots under 40% from the field is great offensively?

  29. Chris says:

The defensive ratings for the whole team at http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/UTA/2012.html are a good place to start. I’ll see if I can find something more concrete. Also, nobody is trying to say Foye is some panacea; really considering it I guess I’d rather see Burks get more minutes than Foye rather than the other way around as I posted above. http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/foyera01.html shows Foye to have a career 112 defensive rating, which is awful. Watching him on the court sees him being too small to guard shooting guards but too poor a primary ballhandler to not be played with a point of some sort alongside him. This makes him a defensive liability.
