Burks or Singleton at 12?

Posted by: Jason Crannell on June 20th, 2011

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

Either one or both of these guys could be selected before the 12th pick, but if both are still available to the Jazz at 12, who would you prefer they selected, and why?

im kinda feeling marcus morris. he doesnt have a me first attitude, he is agressive

    here are his stats

    Season Averages
SEASON TEAM MIN PTS REB AST TO A/T STL BLK PF FG% FT% 3P% PPS
    2008-2009 KU 18.5 7.4 4.7 1.1 1.6 .67 1.0 .3 2.5 .495 .604 .400 1.36
    2009-2010 KU 24.7 12.8 6.1 1.0 1.3 .77 .9 .3 2.6 .570 .660 .375 1.50

  2. drew says:

sorry the stats didnt work too good. he plays both forward positions, But Morris is so solid that most everyone around the league sees him having a long career.

he is projected anywhere from 9 to 17

  3. Woody Palmer says:

@Drew- out of all the guys that the Jazz have worked out, I think that Morris is the closest to a me first attitude. if you haven’t watched his interview from sunday you should check it out.

I like both burks and singleton. If I were the jazz I would pick Singleton if they feel like he can really develop an offensive game. if not i choose burks

  4. AL867 says:

Neither! Take Marshon Brooks. That kid is a play maker. He may be an inch shorter than Burks, but was the second leading scorer in the nation! While playing in the Big East who we all know is probably the best all around conference in NCAA basketball. He has a 7′1″ wingspan and can create for himself and others. He reminds me a little of a young Kobe and I hate Kobe, but we all know he is great!

  5. drew says:

    @Woody

straight from Diana’s post “He said that he would do whatever the team wanted him to do. He said he could guard any position on the court, he can rebound, and score if needed”

that doesnt really sound like a me first kindof guy, more like a guy that is willing to work and do whatever is good for the team, and doesnt put himself first. regardless, i still want him the most.

  6. Shane says:

Between the two players mentioned, I’d take Singleton. We need a lock-down defender. Every team in the final 4 of the playoffs either had a great lock-down defender or they had tremendous team defense. Jazz need both. Go with defense at the #12 pick. Or, the alternate pick…Tobias Harris. Might have the best all-around game of any of the draftees at the 3 spot two years from now.

  7. I wouldn’t be dissapointed with either

  8. Patrick says:

That is a very tough call. I will say that I would not be dissapointed with either drafted. Picking, I would take Singleton, unless Williams was taken with the 3rd pick. Then I may still take Singleton. Singleton can play both SF and SG positions and defend them both. Burks is solid, but pretty locked in at the SG.

Shane, makes a good point about Harris. He is one of the youngest of the draft. He has an all around game. Given a couple yrs he could be one of the best in the draft class. The only problem is I think they are looking for a guy to step in this season.

Brooks, I believe will be good, but he again is locked in at one position. I would take Hamilton before Brooks, who can again play multiple positions.

Really surprised no one has said Fredette yet.

  9. Fredette! : )

I think Fredette is the hands down best player available at 12 if he is still on the board. Like I’ve said elsewhere I think him and Knight could play alongside each other when Harris’ career is winding down, and Jimmer would be a darn good backup PG this year.

Of the two listed options it would be close but I would take Singleton. He may have a better outside shot than Burks and we really need to start playing some D if we want to get back where we belong. I would be surprised if Burks was still on the board however and i think Burks’ 3 point percentage may be down because of all of the attention that he drew offensively (similar story as Hayward how his freshman 3point % was better than his sophomore %).

  10. Chase says:

with the 12th pick the Utah Jazz select…….Alec Burks out of University of Colorado!!! This is a solid pick. If you do your research on this kid he is a stud and strong potential all-star. He can instantly come in and make an impact offensively at the much needed 2-3 position for the Jazz. If not Alec I’d definately go with Marshon Brooks. His upside is also pretty high. Both players are, in my opionion two shooting guards that will do very well in the NBA and are a steal at 12. I like Singleton a lot, but he’s a project offensively….Very Ronnie Brewer-ish

  11. Go with Burks….and if he’s not there, Tobias Harris. I think I’m developing a small man-crush on Harris :) He just might surprise us all!

  12. Zach says:

These are the two guys I’m highest on right now at 12. Lock-down defenders like Singleton are really pretty rare, and I absolutely love his team first attitude. I think Singleton will have a solid career. Every team needs a lock-down defender if they want to win big. On the other hand, I love Burks. He is very athletic with great ball-handling skills. He has all the tools to potentially become a star or at least a starter. I would be thrilled with either of them.

  13. Zach says:

And why does everyone here seem to want another undersized PF?

  14. Colten Davis says:

    Neither, Jimmer.

  15. Gerald says:

@Zach, who with the undersized PF? I’m assuming you are talking about Williams, but I could be wrong, that’s why I’m asking.

@Patrick, I agree with you about Singleton, although Burks is one heck of a player. But honestly, I would go with Harris, because of what he is possible of becoming in 2 years. If I was the Jazz I would go for it. Yeah, we might not have a winning season right now, but that would help with next year’s draft. Then 1 year after that, watch the team bloom in full force. Think about it, would you want Knight, and try and pick up a big guy in the next draft, or even wing, or would you try and get Kanter and think about a PG in the next draft? Both showed great at the combine, and yeah, every player has weaknesses, both of those guys would be a good pick with this year’s #3 unless doing some trading to get the #4 or #5 pick, then we would have just a slight little more to work with and still draft who we want.

  16. JRN5150 says:

    Burks.

I side with Marcus Morris in thinking that Singleton is “not that talented”

  17. Gerald says:

@JRN, I haven’t got that much info on Morris other than maybe what has been said on here. I did read a little about his work out for the Jazz, and I liked his comments.

  18. Zach says:

@Gerald, I was referring to those who want Tobias Harris or Marcus Morris. Williams said he’ll play SF so I don’t consider him undersized, or a PF for that matter.

  19. The only thing that worries me about Burks is his attitude. He doesn’t seem like a Jazz player, whereas Singleton is a high character, well spoken guy who wants to contribute.

And what about Thompson? Harris? Jimmer? Morris?

The #12 pick is turning out to be a lot harder to pick than our #3!!!

  20. Jimmy says:

Burks looked like a grade-A idiot in his interview. I’d go with Jordan Hamilton.

  21. Shockwave says:

    I’m on the Singleton train.

    #3 Val
    #12 Singleton.

Favors and Singleton could be a very intimidating inside-outside defensive presence, not to mention they would be the freakiest forward combo size/speed wise.

    Singleton is faaaast.

  22. Gerald says:

@Shockwave, could you see any combination of Hayward, Favors, Singleton, and Harris running the break? Big Al has heart, but he would still be at the opponent’s basket while the rest at the other end already scoring points.

  23. Patrick says:

Gerald, if I could work it, I would take Knight, Kanter and Harris and be excited about our future. We only have 2 picks so far. It could still happen, but we lose a key man to make it work. Millsap and Miles to the Cavs for 4th, Sessions, and the trade exception. Could happen, then if Irving and Williams are drafted one and two, we could get Kanter, Knight, and Harris. Could you imagine that young core moving to the future? It wont come free, but it could be real nice.

    D Harris/Knight/Sessions
    Hayward/D Harris/Bell
    T Harris/Hayward/Evans
    Favors/Kanter/Evans/Okur
    Al/Kanter/Favors/Okur

You could even dump Harris off somewhere for another solid piece, maybe a defensive big, or another solid wing player. Bring Stockton in as your 3rd PG. Dunno, guess we will see. So many different possible paths this season.

  24. Chase says:

If no Jimmer I’d take Singleton. Depending on wether or not we trade Raja and redraft AK. Having a possible Watson, Hayward, Singleton, Favors, Jefferson defensive group on the floor at times would be amazing.

  25. Chase says:

i said that wrong, resign ak and of course earl. :)
