The Get to Know Us Post
Posted by: JC on September 20th, 2010
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. All right folks, we’re getting down to the nitty-gritty time before the season starts. Perhaps it’s time we get to better know each other before the season starts.
My answers are in blue, leave your answers in the comments below.
1: Who is your favorite player all-time? (all-nba + all-time + present + past)
Pistol Pete Maravich; look below – is it the mustache that sucked me in?
2: Favorite Jazz player this season?
Al Jefferson: Man-Beast
3: NBA Jam – or – NBA2k11? (or favorite NBA video game)
NBA Jam, but … my favorite all-time basketball video game is Double Dribble. My current undefeated streak has stretched from 6th grade (1990) through present time; although I have not played the game since about 2002… I was pretty good at NBA Jam, but recently discovered that I am no longer very good.
4: Old enough to have seen Mark Eaton play in a game?
Yes! Even back in the Salt Palace days!
5: Played hoops in (choose one): Jr. Jazz (rec league), Jr. High, High School, College, Man I’m a former pro, Professional couch surfer!
Jr. Jazz, Jr. High, Couch Surfer (and ward hoops…)
6: Pick and roll – or – Run and gun
Run and Gun please – the less defense the better! Too bad this isn’t working for the GS Warriors…
7: Trade AK?
Long answer: Yes. Short answer: only if we can get value for him that doesn’t cripple us for years to come. I mean, if we stumble this year, get some draft picks or take a shot at a cheap project or something.
8: What do you think about Hayward?
Nice kid, give him two years and he’ll be deadly. He’s got a little bit of everything in the arsenal, he’s a hard worker, why should we be down on someone that will give us 110%, 110% of the time?
9: Is Fes worth the time/effort/money?
No. Elson is/was a better move. Face it, Fes has a low ceiling, it’s time to move on. Let’s focus energy and time on bringing Ante Tomic overseas to play in a Jazz uniform.
10: (optional) Now, rewrite your bio here:
Trimming Mustaches since 1981 – really, I have no mustache, but rather, it’s my inability to grow a quality one that drives me towards greatness. I think people take sports too seriously (me included). I also believe blogs should hover around 500-1200 words. ![]()
11: (optional #2) Should people use the message board (aka Chat) for two-sentence comments rather than the blog section?
Please for the love of all that is holy, post links and short-short thoughts in the message board area. Maybe I’m just old-school and expect to find those types of things there, but to me blogs are for things that take you longer to read than it did for the page to load…
12: (optional #3) Write your 2010-11 Jazz season prediction here:
Jazz win 50 games, finish with NW Division title, get the 4th seed, make it to the second round of the playoffs where they get into a heated 7 game series with an unknown opponent. Hayward gets the chance to hit the game winner and he … Well, you’ll just have to wait and see if we make it to the Conference finals on his shot when May arrives.
Hey, NEW PEOPLE, get on here and start commenting!
Anyways, that’s part of what I stand for. What about you?
Post Script: Big ups to Champ (or was it Gerald…) that posted a question and answer blog awhile back. Your inspiration lives on through these digital words that were typed.

1. John Stockton-amazing respectable person, can’t say enough about him.
2. Deron Williams-he’s going to take his game to a new level.
3. NBA 2k11-i’ve always like the 2k series
4.No, sadly. Stockton, though.
5. Jr. Jazz, Jr. High, ward hoops.
6. Pick and Roll-in my opinion, the epitome of teamwork in one play.
7. Yes..as everyone has seen in my post, and subsequently attacked me for my views.
8. I don’t think he’s the “x-factor”, but he should do fine.
9. if he wants to win and play, then yes. If Fes doesn’t wanna be here, then no.
10. Been a fan since 1995, currently in school, hoping to become a doctor, and the biggest fanatic for sports i’ve ever met.
11. Yes! please! the blogs are for the fans that are trying to get a long, message across and hone their writing skills and try to become a Jazzbot.
12. 57-25, 2nd in West behind LA, go to game 7 against the Lakers in the Conference Finals….and I cant decide an end. We’ll just have to hope.
Hey Spencer, when will #11 take place? (Jazzbot tryouts)
1: Who is your favorite player all-time? (all-nba + all-time + present + past)
John Stockton
2: Favorite Jazz player this season?
Until I see the new guys play gotta go with the safe choice of Deron Williams.
3: NBA Jam – or – NBA2k11? (or favorite NBA video game)
Just played the NBA2k11 demo and wasn’t much impressed. NBA2k10 though was solid and I enjoyed it. As well as NBA2k9. Never really got huge into Jam as it seems to much of a novelty.
4: Old enough to have seen Mark Eaton play in a game?
Old enough, but did I? No. Sadly no.
5: Played hoops in (choose one): Jr. Jazz (rec league), Jr. High, High School, College, Man I’m a former pro, Professional couch surfer!
Junior High and Ward Ball. Now full time couch surfer and sometime with friends at the park.
6: Pick and roll – or – Run and gun
Pick n Roll. Love a set offense. So much of what makes basketball basketball is in the plays and offense. Run and gun is fun but where are the mechanics?
7: Trade AK?
Right now.. NO. We need his length and skills until Okur is fully healthy. If he plays well and is the AK we love then resign him next year at a cheaper rate. If he seems to slow down or fall into the AK of injury we know. Look for valuable trade assets. If nothing available to better our team. Then keep him around anyways.
8: What do you think about Hayward?
Exactly who I wanted if Greg Monroe wasn’t available. But if we would of got Greg would we have Al Jefferson? I’m not sure. But Hayward is unselfish and an all around gritty ball player. Love his style and in time will be astonishing.
9: Is Fes worth the time/effort/money?
Fes has his time. Not a lot of minutes were given. But he never seemed to learn the basic mechanics of his position. Never gave us what we needed exactly. He could of been great and might be in another 2-3 years. But we may have all the time in the world we lack patience and money. Elson will be a good vet fit who can do just about what Fes does for us now.
10: (optional) Now, rewrite your bio here:
N/A
11: (optional #2) Should people use the message board (aka Chat) for two-sentence comments rather than the blog section?
Message board is for quick short comments. Things other then NBA and Jazz related can also be posted there. The Blog’s soul purpose is go into full detail on interesting and new news regarding the Utah Jazz and Jazz only. Blogs our like newspapers and message boards are like twitter. That’s how it should be here.
12: (optional #3) Write your 2010-11 Jazz season prediction here:
Currently without watching a game yet this season. My prediction may be different then when I see this team get into action. But for right now I see the Jazz going 52-30. Locking the Northwest Division by 2 games over Portland. Heading into the Playoffs at the 4th seed. Knocking Portland/Dallas out of round 1. Meeting Lakers in round 2. And depending on teams health advancing or getting stopped. If we can somehow sneak past LA which I think we can. I see us going 4-2 in the Finals losing.
1: Who is your favorite player all-time? John Stockton. Plus he has the nicest legs I’ve ever seen on a man.
2: Favorite Jazz player this season?
Al Jefferson. I’m basing this on personality alone. He is fantastic!
3: NBA Jam – or – NBA2k11? (or favorite NBA video game)
Huh?
4: Old enough to have seen Mark Eaton play in a game?
Yep. My first Jazz game ever with my Jr. Jazz team. He’s about the only player you could see from the back row.
5: Played hoops in (choose one): Jr. Jazz (rec league), Jr. High, High School, College, Man I’m a former pro, Professional couch surfer!
Jr. Jazz
6: Pick and roll – or – Run and gun
Depends who is defending but most of the time I’d say Pick n Roll.
7: Trade AK?
Yes. He hasn’t been very valuable since 07. I’m over it.
8: What do you think about Hayward?
What a sweet lil pumkin! Like JC said, I think it will take a couple years but he is gonna kill it.
9: Is Fes worth the time/effort/money?
Nope. He is tall and that is it. Well, and funny too but funny doesn’t win basketball games.
10: (optional) Now, rewrite your bio here:
I’m still Mrs. Matthews.
11: (optional #2) Should people use the message board (aka Chat) for two-sentence comments rather than the blog section?
Don’t even get me started on this. I will call you out on it. It’s so annoying.
12: (optional #3) Write your 2010-11 Jazz season prediction here:
Jazz aren’t going to make it to the finals. But we will play in the playoffs and make it to the second round. Al Jefferson is going to kill it this season. (Next year is our year.)
J to the C! Thanks but it was Ger, I do the monthly Jazz Nation Poll. I hope to see new names commenting. Its hard to draw them out. Now to the questions!
1: Who is your favorite player all-time? (all-nba + all-time + present + past)
The Mailman
2: Favorite Jazz player this season?
D to the Will
3: NBA Jam – or – NBA2k11? (or favorite NBA video game)
NBA Jam…haven’t played any others to compare.
4: Old enough to have seen Mark Eaton play in a game?
Yes
5: Played hoops in (choose one): Jr. Jazz (rec league), Jr. High, High School, College, Man I’m a former pro, Professional couch surfer!
Jr and High School
6: Pick and roll – or – Run and gun
Run and gun
7: Trade AK?
No A to the K is a defensive beast when he wants to be
8: What do you think about Hayward?
I watched him play in the summer league and like his game.
9: Is Fes worth the time/effort/money?
No, but he’s a monster. I want him just in case it goes down and we have to get down with another team.
10: (optional) Now, rewrite your bio here:
27 year old Jazz fan from Cali. I go to almost all Jazz games in LA against either the Clips or the Lakes.
11: (optional #2) Should people use the message board (aka Chat) for two-sentence comments rather than the blog section?
I’m sure you and most everyone knows how I feel about that.
12: (optional #3) Write your 2010-11 Jazz season prediction here:
50 wins, 3rd seed, either the Lakes or the Thunder will eliminate us. If some way some how we avoid those two teams, we can reach the finals.
Champ, your #9 is great, but I think Fes is more of a dancer than a brawler
JC…haha, well as long as he can carry and dance Dwill to safety during a brawl I’m good.
JC, I think Jazzbot tryouts are usually around October, a little before the season begins. That’s when they usually are.
1: Who is your favorite player all-time? (all-nba + all-time + present + past)
Hard for me to say, so many great players.
2: Favorite Jazz player this season?
Deron Williams then Paul Millsap
3: NBA Jam – or – NBA2k11? (or favorite NBA video game)
NBA 2K11, I have been a 2K player since like 2k6.
4: Old enough to have seen Mark Eaton play in a game?
No…I really really wish I was though.
5: Played hoops in (choose one): Jr. Jazz (rec league), Jr. High, High School, College, Man I’m a former pro, Professional couch surfer!
Jr. Jazz, Jr. High, High School
6: Pick and roll – or – Run and gun
Run and Gun please, Have always loved watching the Suns.
7: Trade AK?
No, unless we get players of at least equal value in return.
8: What do you think about Hayward?
Liked what I say in Summer League, just hope he does well against real NBA stars.
9: Is Fes worth the time/effort/money?
Yes, we get him for cheap while he can put in up to 10, maybe 15, solid minutes
11: (optional #2) Should people use the message board (aka Chat) for two-sentence comments rather than the blog section?
Yes! I always give low ratings for those less than 1 paragraph long.
12: (optional #3) Write your 2010-11 Jazz season prediction here:
Jazz win 52 games, finish second in NW Division, get the 4th seed, lose in Game 7 of 2nd round.
1: Who is your favorite player all-time? (all-nba + all-time + present + past)
, but I’d say Stockton/Malone.
Big fan of Barkley, then and now
2: Favorite Jazz player this season?
Deron – was it me or did he win the Denver series almost singlehandedly?
3: NBA Jam – or – NBA2k11? (or favorite NBA video game)
Sadly, I have time to post on blogs, but not to play video games.
4: Old enough to have seen Mark Eaton play in a game?
Yep. Barely.
5: Played hoops in:
Through high school and for fun/recreation now
6: Pick and roll – or – Run and gun
Pick and Roll for my team. I’m oldschool like that. But the Run-n-gunners are exciting to beat.
7: Trade AK?
Sure. But only for a deal worth staying in the luxury tax. Namely, a starting Center and a good backup PG.
8: What do you think about Hayward?
Watched him in the NCAA tournament and liked what I saw. I predict he does well in the Jazz system and organization.
9: Is Fes worth the time/effort/money?
I’m all for giving Fes a chance to develop, given we have no better Defensive center. He’s cheap at $1M a year and I think he made a real difference against Nene, Martin, Birdman in the Denver series, however stone-handed he was. I think he has potential, he’s young, and even less mature than his age. I was looking forward to seeing him get a chance with Okur out and Doufos traded. If he could develop some post-up moves and not foul (keep his arms up instead of bringing them down on the player), he could make a real difference, just because of his huge size! Aargh!
10: (optional) Now, rewrite your bio here:
Web Developer, Entrepreneur, Jazz fan, BYU AND Utah fan (BYU in the rival game, though), married 2 kids, do-it-yourselfer, armchair coach and GM, etc
11: (optional #2) Should people use the message board (aka Chat) for two-sentence comments rather than the blog section?
Yes. Although I never read the message board.
12: (optional #3) Write your 2010-11 Jazz season prediction here:
I think they win 51 games, good start, bad november-december, great Jan-Mar, peter off at the end, NW Division over the Thunder, 3rd place in the West behind Lakers, Dallas. Beat Portland first round, beat Thunder in 7 games in second round. Lose to Lakers in WCF.
Ok I’ll give this a shot.
1: Who is your favorite player all-time?
35% says John, 33% says Karl, and 32% but rising say’s D-Will
2.Favorite Jazz player this season?
I’m going to change this to the Jazz player that I increase my liking for the most this season. Al Jefferson and CJ
3.NBA Jam – or – NBA2k11?
2k
4.Old enough to have seen Mark Eaton play in a game?
Nope.
5.Played hoops in (choose one): Jr. Jazz (rec league), Jr. High, High School, College, Man I’m a former pro, Professional couch surfer!
Jr. Jazz All-Star, Professional Couch Surfer, weekly with my friends, Church Ball.
6.Pick and roll – or – Run and gun
Playing=P and R Watching= R and G
7.Trade AK?
IF you trade you can’t just get equall talent, you have to get more talent, equall D, and younger, he’s just to valuable to give up for nothing.
8.What do you think about Hayward?
Good stuff will happen, no doubt.
9.Is Fes worth the time/effort/money?
At the first of the offseason I wanted to resign Fes, it’s been months now and this whole thing is becoming a mess, glad we got elson, I’ll take Fes still, but not for many years and big bucks.
10. (optional) Now, rewrite your bio here:
My name is Kyle. I like sports.
11.(optional #2) Should people use the message board (aka Chat) for two-sentence comments rather than the blog section?
For the record, I never go to that part of the site, I only look at blogs really, now IDK how many ppl go to the message board, but I don’t think its nearly as much, so If you have some small BUT REALLY IMPORTANT than idc if you do a blog for it..
12.(optional #3) Write your 2010-11 Jazz season prediction here:
55 wins. 2nd round or further
1. John Stockton – he is why I became an NBA fan

2. This is harder. Deron Williams is the quick easy answer. I am most excited to see how Al Jefferson does!
3. Sorry no video games for me at least not NBA ones but I am awesome at Rock Band
4. Yes I saw Mark Eaton play in a game more than one
Although he was getting older and having back problems by the time I remember the Jazz.
5. umm a little ward ball. Mostly just enjoy watching it. we’d play in our neighborhood. If we played the WCF it would be Jazz vs whoever we hated at the time. In the ECF it was always the Knicks vs the Bulls and I loved to be John Starks. I love playing HORSE too!
6. I like a mixture of both. I think thats when the Jazz are at its best. Run when they can but set up their offense when they can’t
7. AK is an amazing player. Has already said he wants to take less money to finish his career with teh Jazz. Why would you trade him? SLC Dunk had a great article about AK yesterday. It basically proved that AK’s numbers have pretty much stayed the same when given playing time. I love AK don’t trade him!
8. don’t yet about Hayward I am excited about his diverse play. He was super nice when I met him on Saturday at the Dodge Barrage
9. i have mixed feelings about Hayward. I really dont’ know what to think He was great against Denver kind of. not bad as a 3rd string Center
10. bio- mother of two cute kids. happily married. live in Provo. stay at home with the kids. typical good stuff
11.I hate the short one-two sentence blogs. They are not blogs! Use the chat section of the board!
12 hmm i say we win 54 games. I really like this team this year. we will win the NW finish 3rd in the WC.
Wow this is the second time in a couple of weeks someone has used the idea I had ready to write about, first the football one by Adam and now this one, even the same title. Great minds I guess. Oh well they are probably both better than what I was going to write. So here goes:
1. John Stockton
2. Raja Bell (nostalgia)
3. Pong
4. Yes, but not only Mark Eaton, Billy Paultz and
Rich Kelly also, a high flying trio from the Jazz
5. My dreams
6. Run and Gun for sure
7. No
8. Much better looking in person, great eyes
9. No, I just haven’t seen a lot of progress
10. dartboard
11. Message boards are better for questions or short
thoughts, the problem is I don’t think very many
people read them.
12. I think 51 wins would be great, it is really
dependent on how well we play together and how
everyone’s health holds up.
1:
Jeff Hornacek (I know that makes me odd but I love the guy. When I got the chance to meet him at my first game ever in Salt Lake City in November he seemed like he honestly wanted to talk to me)
2:
Al Jefferson Or Gordon Hayward. I’m a big AK47 fan but I’m really excited about these two guys.
3:
NBA2k11. What can I say, I love the 2k games.
4:
No, well atleast I don’t think so. We didn’t get any games that I could watch until the last decade or so. I saw some finals games in the 90s but really in Australia it’s been pretty limited.
5:
High School and before. It’s a little different here though and not a big deal to play in high school.
6:
Pick and roll. No reason, I just like it.
7:
NO!!! I am a big fan of AK and would be devastated to lose him. Keep him around unless we can get an amazing deal like a high lottery pick and a decent Center.
8:
I’m excited, I think he is going to be a very good player for the franchise. I’m hoping for a new coming of Hornacek.
9:
Time yes, money no, effort yes. Time and effort should be put into every player who is capable of playing in the nba. In all fairness, that is the difference between good and great. All players in the nba are good so it is worth trying with him. He isn’t, however, worth anything near the even a mil a year at this stage as all he is is big. People should not be payed for being big!!!
10:
Just like in my real blog, I don’t know what to say. Hoping to teach in Utah some time soon as I graduate in November (yeh our school system is on a calender year here). Anyone know of any high schools needing PE teachers (gym teachers)?
11:
No, but I think the chat section needs to be changed so the original comment stays at the beginning.
12:
50+ wins. I see us finishing in 3rd in the west and meeting the 4th seed thunder in the conference finals. This is where we will either shine and go all the way or let our mental weaknesses let us get swept.
1. Mailman of course, and Ray Allen, Brutal Force vs Pure Efficiency
2. No one in particular, the team is my favorite player
3. Basketball games were never so good, but i’m a total Madden addict
4. Yep, old enough, but i don’t have many souvenirs, at that time it was very hard to see jazz games in france, no internet and only few games on pay-per-view TV…… but i can remember easily my big boy Felton Spencer…
5. Playground with friends as a kid, and especialy couch surfer now, we don’t play basketball at school in france, Handball is the collective sport number one
6. the important in sport is to win at the end, Run’N'Gun never win at the end
7. No reel opinion on that, but if you give me Ray Allen in exchange i say Yes and Double Yes
8. He have a lot of skill, he’s smart, old school player, i like that
9. Triple NO, like i allready said before, he’s not and will never be a basketball player
10. I’m a Mustache fan too, and above all Friendly Mutton Chops Community Member, and just because i know you like that in Utah, my 2 arms are entirely covered by Tattoo….
11. I never been on the message board, i don’t think i will go on one day, so i will be grateful if they will write on this because i don’t have time to loose to open all these crapy blogs…
12. i’m not a gambler, i don’t make prediction
1.John Stockton-I was a point-guard once
2. Deron Williams-Will prove that he’s one of the best players in the game this year. IMO a legitimate MVP type
3. Not sure. I’ve played NBA Jam and other less realistic and more “arcade” style basketball games then “simulations” over the years but I’m good at both.
4. Yes but I never did. By the time I saw the Jazz first play in 1998 he was retired.
5. Jr. Jazz, Jr. High, High School and I currently intramural at college
6. Pick and roll. I liked playing defense more then offense because I was better at stealing the ball then shooting it
7. No. He’s a leader, understands Sloan’s system and if he can stay healthy then he’s worth the price. Let him play out his contract and then go back to Russia.
8. I like him a lot. Very hard worker who’s a student of the game and a team player. Give him a year or two and he should be a very steady contributor of very good numbers for the Jazz.
9. No. He’s proven all he is is a big warm body on the court. Nothing else. Find someone else for a change.
12. (didn’t feel like doing 10 or 11). The Jazz win 50-55 games, get a top five seed in the playoffs (at best 2, at worst five) and D-Will goes god mode again in the playoffs, with interesting results.
1: Who is your favorite player all-time? (all-nba + all-time + present + past)
John Stockton! Greatest player ever on the Jazz, holds records that will NEVER be surpassed, truly an inspiring leader, hard worker, and outstanding talent.
2: Favorite Jazz player this season?
Can’t pick just one! I dig youth and upside so I like Hayward and Gaines, but Sundi might not even be on the team when we start. The starters I really love to watch are AK and AJ, so I’ll go with Kirilenko as my official answer with Jefferson close behind.
3: NBA Jam – or – NBA2k11? (or favorite NBA video game)
NBA Jam was pretty good, but nothing ever has measured up to the NBA Street series. The player development involved in NBA Street was just such a wonderful aspect.
4: Old enough to have seen Mark Eaton play in a game?
Absolutely. I was born in 1982 and saw Mark Eaton live when I was a kid and still in SLC.
5: Played hoops in (choose one): Nothing organized. I enjoy a pickup game once in awhile but never played in preps or college.
6: Pick and roll – or – Run and gun
Pick and roll, all day! I love all the intricate cuts and floor spacing routines that transpire in a really great offensive possession.
7: Trade AK?
No, please! Resign him for less after the year ends. He’s not the AK of old, but in addition to the myriad skills he displays in the game he has some great intangibles and energizes both the team and crowd. I would be so sad to see him go.
8: What do you think about Hayward?
He definitely has the talent to be an all-star in this league if he stays dedicated. I’m happy to have him on the team and interested to see what he can accomplish with guidance from the great coaches and players the Jazz have.
9: Is Fes worth the time/effort/money?
I still think he is, though the Elson signing has seemingly made the organization’s stance on him clear. Kyrylo comes on our terms or on no terms at all. He’ll be on the Cavs or the Rockets within the next couple of weeks.
10: Now, rewrite your bio here:
Born in Helsinki Finland, dad is from Salt Lake, mom is the finn half. Moved back to SLC when I was a kid, from ‘85-91. Good time to be a Jazz fan! Have loved them ever since, even though I’ve had to love them from afar in Reno NV where I now reside. I have a family here and only very rarely get to see my many aunts / uncles back in Salt Lake. We’re the black sheep of the family in a manner of speaking, as we’re the only non-Mormons on my dad’s side.
11: Should people use the message board for two-sentence comments rather than the blog section?
Yes, clearly. Really, this poll should probably be there too. There are really a lot of things not constituting a “blog” at all that are in the blogs section.
12: Write your 2010-11 Jazz season prediction here:
I’m extremely optimistic! Hayward could have an immediate impact, and if Jerry figures out the right rotation we have a ton of talent and skill available for use. KOC has built this team to win now and hopefully we can answer the bell. I project us at 58-24, 2nd seed in the West, winning the conference and losing to the Heat in the NBA Finals. The refs will steal a game at Staples for the Lakers in the conference finals, but we’ll outplay them solidly and win in 6 because Gasol injures his leg. We have the personnel to defend the Miami juggernaut somewhat, but will be worn down by their role-players like Mike Miller, and will either barely scrape out game 6 in Salt Lake and lose by 15-20 in game 7, or we’ll lose on a dagger-style jumper by LBJ in 6.
Okay, that scenario is pretty intricate considering the season hasn’t even started yet =P
