The Utah… Hornets?

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

I read today that Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints bought the Hornets for a reported $338 million. His plan is to keep them in the Big Easy and try to improve its relationship with the community. In the interview he said that an effective way to do that is a name change that will reflect the culture of New Orleans. He mentioned asking the Jazz to let them have the name back.

I am pretty sure Miller would say no but I am frightened at the possibility. I love our name and the history that goes with it. I want to know what you guys would think about a name change. It wouldnt  have to be the Hornets but it could work (the whole beehive thing). I myself am very against it.

Jazz Nation, What do you think?? If yes, any name ideas?

Sorry, but as much sense in names as that makes, it would cause all sorts of confusion. Theres too much of a history now of the Jazz in Utah.

Grizzlies, Lakers, and Hornets all have names originating on other locales as well. At least the Thunder were smart enough to change Sonics to Thunder.

The Jazz have a history with that name, it would be like the hornets are stealing what has happened with the Jazz.

On a more sarcastic note we could trade names with the Saints…

Larry Miller once answered that question with a no chance..Next question?? Like the Lakers most people don’t even know where they started at. Their history is now so deep in LA that there is no chance..

The Jazz name is Utah. Its too late for that now. If the Millers even considered it, I’d have my 2nd favorite team as my new goto team. The Utah Hornets doesnt even sound good. The Jazz just kind of rolls off your tongue. Swapping the names makes sense to the locality, The beehive state etc… I’d still never go for it one bit.

When I think of the Jazz I dont think of music or anything to do with music. Its become something of its own to Utah Fans.

Ok, can people please go read this. I’m currently in the middle of a fb conversation. The person I’m talking too….I’m on the verge of just calling him an idiot.

Some people are not worth arguing with. If all the experts who get paid to share their opinions think that the Jazz are one of the best franchises in NBA history, then whos some shmuck on FB to say otherwise unless its his worthless opinion?

Thats like saying Adam Morrison is one of the greatest NBA players because he has won a championship ring… No, he rode other players coattails. Malone, Stockton, Sloan, and many other Jazz players who chose to play their careers with the Jazz and not shop around for teams with the exception of one year for the mailman, those HOF players show why Utah is a storied franchise. BTW we lost to MJ, considered THEE best player ever.

The argument is easy to win so long as the other person is willing to listen and consider factual information. (FYI I didnt read every post, not going to waste my time on a 100 posts of vitriol and garbage being spewed forth)

I think the nickname “Jazz” is too much interconnected with the team, & also gives meaning to the history of the team.

My Uncle and were talking about this last night… I have no problem giving the Jazz name back to NOLA. But the Millions it would cost the Millers is why there is no chance in hell this happens.

But… It’s absolutely ridiculous that Charlotte has a basketball team and it’s name is not The Hornets… The city of Charlotte’s nick name is the HORNETS NEST. I mean come on…

Tradition is rooted deep, but some names are so regionally specific that it’s absurd that they moved. It should be the New Orleans Jazz, it should be the Minnesota Lakers, it should be the Charlotte Hornets. It’s like the Boston Celtics moving to Las Vegas and being called the Las Vegas Celtics… it’s stupid.

I propose this, N.O. gets the Jazz back, Charlotte gets Hornets back, Memphis can be the Bobcats (I would personally change the name to the Memphis Blues, how cool is that, they aren’t in Vancouver any more) and the Jazz could be the Grizzlies (or the Diamondbacks or Stars)
