Who are we?

Have you ever wondered if having amnesia would be cool?

     I have.

Just imagine:  You wake up in a room and you have this thick bandage on your head and you’re like, “Who am I?”  And suddenly this super hot lady walks in and you’re like “Who are you!?” and she’s like “I’m your wife!” and you’re all “SCORE! Wanna make out?”  And she’d be like “No way, you have recently suffered major head trauma!” And you’d be like “That’s alright, baby.”

It would be like meeting her all over again.   How cool would that be?

And then these cute little kids walk in, and they are all smart and cute and obviously testing way above their age in school, and you’d be like “Who are they?” and your hot wife would be like “Those are your kids!” and you would be like “SWEET!” and start high fiving doctors and stuff.

And then this nerdy looking guy with glasses and a laptop will come in the room and you’ll be like “Who is he?” and your super-intelligent child will be like “That is Oscar your accountant.  He’s here to discuss your multi-million dollar investment portfolio.” And you’d be like “No WAY!!” and your super intelligent child who also is a bit of a joker will be like “Yeah, just kidding.  His name is Detective Rosenrosen and he is investigating you for crashing a dune buggy full of stolen Yao Ming  jerseys into the French Embassy.  Which, not coincidentally, is how you suffered your brain damage. ” And you’d be all like, “Aw, Bummer.”

I mean, it could go something like that.

But the point is, recovering from amnesia would be cool in that it would give you the chance to get to know yourself all over again.

Just like in the highly probable example given above where you wake up and say “Who am I?” I find myself waking up this morning and asking myself “Who are the Jazz?”

Do we know who this team is yet?  Do the Jazz have an identity that can be readily pointed out?  So far, they are the team that comes back from double digit deficits.  But is that really all that they are?

I’d like to see in the comments below who you think this team is.  Because for me, I feel like the amnesia is just wearing off and it’s time to figure this out.  A solid sense of identity will go a long way for this team in meeting it’s goals.    Goals, that rightfully should be set  high.

But first we have to ask. . . Who are the Jazz?

  1. hahaha, that reminded me of 50 first dates sorta..anyways, this team has been different, mainly because our new players (duh…). Better on road, better at D (for most of season), struggling at home and with offense.

However, last nights game, I was there, and it felt alot like the older booz/memo/dwill era where we had an elite offense. I’m thinking that we are starting to take steps finally, and if we can play with that O and our newly acquired D, then we might have our best team since the late 90’s.

However, saturday morning I might wake up and learn that we lose to the cavs by 55…

    Ha ha. Nice.

I really think our identity as a team will eventually evolve into a tough mentality-type team, hopefully. They have the right players to develop it, and I see a lot more banging in the paint than in the “ow, my pinky hurts” boozer days. I still want to see some nasty, “get out my face, fool” from Big-Al when he dunks on some punk, (loved when boozer would do that). I think eventually they will turn into a high powered offensive beast, with just enough toughness & defense to win some big games.

A very entertaining read, and I appreciate the point you raise. I’ve read many posts on this site claiming we lost a particular game because we didn’t play “true Jazz basketball,” which seems to mean playing how the Stockton/Malone teams played, or maybe just playing with maximum effort and perfect efficiency at all times. These ideas aren’t realistic.

The team’s identity in the Knicks game is one I hope they can continue for the rest of the season, and it was largely due to Memo’s presence. If he can stay healthy, our lineup is instantly much more flexible. We saw Watson and CJ playing with the starters, Memo and AK finally giving the second unit more than one good scoring option, and Jefferson and Millsap getting much more rest than usual. With the addition of just one more player, it seemed like the Jazz suddenly had many more weapons. I hope that will become this team’s identity.

Thanks for the laugh. I’m hoping by playoff time they’ve figured out their roles but because Jerry plays so many guys I think it might take a while.

  5. Excellent read! I agree with Jeff–Memo’s return will be a huge factor in how we shape up going forward. A much more potently offensive team, a little more size, better shooting, etc. We need to play to our advantages: early offense, moving w/o the ball, passing and assisting like nobody’s business, and getting to the free throw line. Hopefully we see some semblence of consistency going forward…

    LOL!

I agree with Jeff and David. Memo’s return will be HUGE for this team going forward. We’ve instantly become a deeper team with much more offensive power coming off the bench. The defense has been there, now it’s time for the offense to catch up.
