Direction? – One Word But So Many Questions.

Posted by: Steven on July 1st, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

Players who can play at the Point.

Devin Harris

Mo Williams

Earl Watson

Jamaal Tinsley

Some even call for Alec Burks to develop his game there. With the other 4 players there currently I don’t see much room for that.

But it sure seems like we are overloaded at the PG position.

However there has been talk that Devin and Mo could play on the floor together, interchanging in the PG and SG position.

Which leaves another question where does Hayward fit in? SG or SF? Personally I like to see him with the ball in his hand, either position is fine with me as long as some plays go through him, that’s when I think he becomes a more valuable player and the Jazz become that bit less predictable. If Hayward is fighting for the SG position he could be doing so alongside Alec Burks, Mo Williams and/or Devin Harris, Blake Ahern, and perhaps even Kevin Murphy?

Then there is the Bigs. With the qualifying offer issued to Jeremy we still have the 5 bigs that seemed one too many at times last year.

The Small Forward position as it currently stands will be contested by Demarre Carroll and Gordon Hayward, and maybe Josh Howard who says he wants to come back, at least to get a guaranteed contract before being traded elsewhere. AK47 has also talked about coming back, if only to save himself the burden of selling his Utah homes in a bad market. As much as his old contract was too much for a player who seemed frequently injured with petty niggles that kept him out of the team all too often an AK on twice the contract of Bell playing 10 games less than Raja is a much more valuable player to have on the roster.

Raja wants out. Unless we find a taker for a non offensive player with a poor attitude as small as it is we might have to use the amnesty on him to get rid of that contract.

CJ seems destined to move on to pastures new. Nice kid but probably best for all concerned.

So far our squad looks like this

Devin Harris

Mo Williams

Earl Watson

Jamaal Tinsley

Al Jefferson

Paul Milsap

Derrick Favors

Enes Kanter

Jeremy Evans

Gordon Hayward

Alec Burks

Demarre Carroll

Blake Ahern (does he have a contract, i’m not sure?)

Kevin Murphy

Thats 14 with possibly Josh Howard and/or AK to come on board.

So to me its sounds like nonsense that Devin Harris and Mo Williams will be playing in the same team together. It raises too many questions regarding finding playing time for Hayward and Burks. However unless they get a taker for Devin they might be stuck with that option for a season and will then look to move on either Earl or Jamaal as a short term fix.

As for the clogging up of playing time amongst the Big’s, I can see Al or Paul being moved on to make room for the development of Favors and Kanter. Personally I think when Favors and Kanter were acquired by KOC it suggested to me that Al was only ever seen as a short term solution to the hole left in the team by Boozer moving to Chicago. Al was seen as a good fix but as a player with flaws in his game and a contract that was too high to pay long term.

Maybe as fans when we look to possible trades we need to accept that we have one too many PG’s, and that Dragic, Lowry, Nash or even Scott Machado are not coming here now. We might also have to accept despite how much we might have a preference for either  Paul or Al that one of them does not have a Jazz future beyond one more year, and will probably be gone sooner if we are able to get something in exchange.  We also seem to an abundance of  people who can play at the SG position and therefore our most glaring need for an upgrade seems to be at the small forward position. Unless it can be addressed in free agency we might well see AK return.

A PG and possibly Al or Paul moves on giving us a 12 – 13 man roster, do what you like with that.

  1. Our direction is to acquire as many one year contracts as possible and then be screwed after this year

  2. Omar says:

    Thats the sad reality.

  3. Media and Agents (of players on the Jazz no less) have begun questioning Kevin O’ Connor, wondering “what type of team” and plans the Jazz are going for.

In particular, they have asked “What position is Gordon Hayward going to play, 2 or 3, and how does that fit in with the rest of the roster?”

Is Gordon Hayward the odd man out?

What about 4 mediocre point guards?

What about the log jam in the front court?

Is Millsap going to be coming off the bench?

Surely the Jazz aren’t stupid enough to NOT start Derrick Favors?

  4. Omar says:

They ONLY great thing about the Jazz signing Josh Howard is being able to read all of the KOC die-hards explain and justify that move.

  5. Matt Webb says:

Come on people, you can’t all be this dim. He is acquiring contracts to trade. This is apparent. These shortsighted complaints make Jazz fans look finicky and panic stricken. Obscure rumors are your primary sources for this fire and you all might as well be dried sage. Expect a pg and a big to be traded at some point, either now or leading up to the trade deadline.

Quick fix isn’t the answer. We are doing fine. And why would we want anything but 1 yr contracts? Next year we have the 4 younglings on books and that is it.

    Just stop the nonsense.

  6. yeah now we have the awesome jam at SG spot. Sweet! all !@#$% 4 of our young lottery players fighting for playing time.

  7. Omar says:

I would be more than happy to eat my words if KOC pulls off a blockbuster trade. I truly hope I am wrong, but about 10 years of luke-warm FA signings and trades, Im not expecting much.

Also, I HATE mid-season blowup roster trades, that is never a good sign. We already know what Howard, Harris, Al, Bell, Watson, and Millsap bring to the table, so either you want them or you don’t, there is not any upside, so either keep them all year or trade them now. No purpose to burying youngster that need playing time, and them post-AllStar break after trade deadline expecting them to be playing at a high playoff level.

  8. Ya Matt cause we are going to bring in 9 players next year to contribute!!
