Draft Dissatisfaction

Wow.  I am not satisfied.  Alec Burks at #12 with Kawhi Leonard still on the board?   How can we not have taken Kawhi Leonard at #12?  Small Forward is clearly our biggest need, and we have an up and coming shooting guard in Gordon Hayward.  The only thing I can think of is if we are planning to package a trade for a veteran SF.  We need perimeter defense, one of Leonard’s strengths.  Another big need we have is 3-point shooting.  Burks shot 29% from the 3-point line last year.  All I can say is if we don’t bring back AK next year, we will be up a creek without a paddle at the 3.

With getting Burks, Hayward will likely slide to SF. Burks is a great cutter and potentially good defender.

    Plus getting Kanter was excellent.

  2. Kaleb says:

I don’t disagree with Kanter at #3. He definitely fills a need. I just don’t see how Burks was a better choice than Leonard, especially with the strides that Hayward made playing the 2 last year. He has even said that he feels most comfortable playing SG.

  3. Thor says:

Locke thinks Burks is the only potential all-star in the draft. I’m excited that we got him!

  4. Gerald says:

Maybe they feel that Burks is someone better to work with, and possibly got a team option/trade package working up for Miles. Possibly also something with Millsap.

  5. Kaleb says:

@Gerald, if that is the case and they work out a package with Millsap and Miles for a proven vet SF, then I will be ok with Burks.

  6. Austin says:

What moves do you guys seeing KOC making the rest of the off season? Or do you think we go with the team we have counting miles and a.k

  7. Thor says:

You guys didn’t pay attention… who did Perrin say impressed him the most that Sun when all the potential Small Forwards worked out? PAUL CARTER I suspect he’ll be at fall camp

  8. Shane says:

Draft isn’t the end of it….and I don’t think drafting Burks immediately means Hayward is a 3. I see Burks possibly backing up Hayward at the 2 spot and even playing a little point like Locke said earlier today. I think they’ll address SF needs through trade and FA. I’m hoping they target Ariza.

  9. Gerald says:

Thor, I forgot about that. I heard he worked out well. Could be another undrafted secret. We have options. Possibly (long shot) for Carter. We have possible trade options. Personally, I would move first Miles, Okur, and Millsap. I know Enes is friends with Okur, but maybe Okur will retire under the Jazz. Something honorable. Millsap…great player but I should be a 6th man if can’t work the 3spot. If neither of those are for him…trade could be in order. Also, we have to think about next draft year too. We could find someone there while all of our young guys getting experience. I really think the Jazz are looking at the OKC model, but on crack.

  10. James Seaman says:

12th pick was a crapshoot, none of the players available was clearly better than any of the others. But taking Kanter 3rd was a smart move and definitely made it a good night.

  11. Thor says:

Just noticed that Locke had posted his “big board” earlier, where he ranks all the prospects that he’s reviewed for the season. 1. Irving 2. Kanter 3. Knight 4. Burks So according his OPINION, (for what its worth) we walked away with 2 & 4. NOT BAD!

  12. Browncoat says:

My understanding is that Evans Is working his butt off with Hayward, Favors, and Big Al in California. I would love to have him at the 3.

  13. Gerald says:

@Tyler, if Evans developed more of a shot and some muscle, I think he might work out also.

  14. Browncoat says:

Gerald it was stated that Evans has gained some muscle. It was at the end of an article by the sltrib. We need to be sure to extend him right now.

  15. Gerald says:

I would like to read that article.

  16. Browncoat says:

    @Gerald Here it is: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/jazz/52035088-87/jazz-harris-draft-morris.html.csp

Took me a little while to find it… forgot what the main article was. It is a small note at the end of the article.

  17. TACOREV says:

I’d say this draft was pretty solid

  18. TACOREV says:

    The Jazz’s draft, I mean

  19. Thor says:

I just read that the JAZZ had Burks not only ranked ahead of Leonard… but ahead of Jimmer and Walker as well

  20. Zach says:

Jazz made the best choice they could with the 3rd pick, and I really wanted Burks. Still not sure if passing on Kawhi was the right choice though.

  21. Patrick says:

Nice draft. Very successful so far. Still have work to do. Does anyone think that there could be a trade in the works. I saw Indiana take Leonard, and with rumors swirling about the possible trade of Granger, it kindof makes you go hmmmm. Millsap for Granger? Would probably have to send Bell down with him to make it work. Have plenty of SG’s now anyhow. Thoughts?

When did we pick up CJ’s contract? Missed it, but hoopshype has him listed as being picked up. Has anyone heard about AK, this could be a sign that we are bringing him back for a decent price? Guess we are only in the market for SF, and PG’s. Can you say Stockton and Carter?

  22. TACOREV says:

Indiana is trading Leonard to San Antonio for George Hill

  23. JRN5150 says:

I am pleased. Many people picked burks to be the pre draft rookie of the year and also compared him to Dwayne Wade. Obviously he probably wont be as good as wade but I think this is our shot at an All Star wing. Now that we have Kanter and cap room lets trade Sap for a good forward. Would any of you guys do Tony Parker and Richard Jefferson for Paul Millsap and Devin Harris I have to admit I am tempted, just not sure if I would pull the trigger?

  24. Woody Palmer says:

I like this draft a lot. I think Burks is a steal. I do think that we will probably target a 3 with a milsap trade but i dont see why granger would be the guy. He is older and has a big contract. the only way it makes sense is if the jazz think they are contending next year and with all the youth on the team i think that is an unrealistic goal.

IMO if you trade milsap you target a younger SF and future picks. and maybe a back up PG to replace price or watson.

  25. JAZZ KING says:

I never thought so before but I was watching the jazz nuggets game and i an now convinced that millsap can and will move to the 3 spot and if there is ahe can’t keep up with then they move over hayward to 3 and play burks at 2 keep everyone but miles and bell

  26. JAZZ KING says:

Sorry miss spelling “if there is a GUY he can’t keep up with”

  27. L.K.Anderson says:

It will take a while to work in these kids so why all the hurry up to make a trade?? Jazz lost two maybe three centers. It will take a while to evaluate. I think KOC did his homework and should recieve a “A” grade for the draft tonight. Did anyone notice that the Wolves made a half a dozen trades?? Let us see what happens this next week..

  28. Thor says:

One thing we know for sure is that we don’t basically know anything about how Kanter will turn out and we’ll have to wait and see how he pans out. Do we know if Okur will rerturn to being a valuable team member going forward? NO. So trading our best player away MAY be a little premature.

  29. Shane says:

agree with LK – KOC gets an ” A”grade for the draft. Excellent job. If anyone doesn’t like these guys, KOC knows them better than you. They could turn out to be a bust, but I’m sure KOC went with the guys he really thought were best based on college, workouts, and interviews.

  30. Adam says:

I can’t complain that we got Burks. He’s a good player and fits a need. Going into that 12 pick, I noticed that Kawhi Leonard was still on the board and I was excited because I thought he would’ve been a great pick for us. I thought for sure he would be gone by #12, but he was there. And we passed on him. Huh?

After thinking about Burks for a bit, my thoughts were that we pretty much just got Ronnie Brewer back with Burks. He’s a slasher guard who’s not a great shooter. That’s another reason I was a little disappointed. The Jazz need a player who can shoot really well. Alec Burks didn’t fill that need

  31. Ian Bautista says:

I still think that we got a great draft! Burks is a steal @ 12. I also think we got a decent Lineup. Now I’m looking forward at the start of the season.
