Hating the Warriors

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

So we let the chips fall, and none of them landed in our favor, honor be damned, the Warriors completed their mid season tank that effectively sums up all that is ugly about the NBA.

It’s disgusting in word, put simply; it’s an abomination that I truly feel sorry for the Golden State Fans and players to have to be subjected to it.

While NBA teams have been tanking for years, it’s still something that’s rather stomach churning to watch. The truly shocking aspect is that the NBA is the only league that really struggles with this problem.

Take the NFL for instance, the Colts were as bad as most NFL teams truly can come, but nearly blew their chances at the top overall pick with a late season victory, twice. The 2010 Lions were looking at a miserable end of the season but the lure of the top pick, and went on a four game winning streak, effectively dropping them out of the top ten draft selections.

How a competitor like Jordan can put a team as wretched as the 2011-12 Bobcats is simply confounding. How a team that makes their tanking as obvious as Golden State did over this season without retribution is infuriating and taints the NBA as a whole. The current lottery system is as real a deterrent to teams tanking as magic school bus taking you for a private tour of the moon, put simply, it’s failing, and miserably to.

So while we can wait and hope that somehow, someway one of the other 7 lottery bound teams leapfrogs the Warriors, our only real hope is that Stern might implement some system or tangible deterrent to stop teams from sandbagging the NBA’s competitive spirit.

So in short, I hate the Warriors and truly hope their new GM Bob Myers contracts a raging case of syphilis from a bus seat.

  1. Don’t count on Stern to fix anything though–he’s one of the major reasons why the NBA is damaged as it is. Keeping the status quo is good for business.

  2. I think the “tanking” issue has gotten to the point where the league might actually address it this off season. Maybe they might consider taking “protections” off draft picks in the future, or something of that nature.

Personally, I would like to see the 14 teams that don’t make the playoffs, all having an equal chance at getting the first pick. That way, there would be no advantage in one team trying to lose more games then another. Each team has a 1 in 14 chance of getting the first pick. So it would all be completely random as to how the draft order might unfold.

I said it… dont think about it.
u see tie breakers? who wins? yes, biggest markets, no question.

  4. I think Jordan is doing alot of it on purpose. He started his career with the the Bulls winning him with the all time tank job. I believe the last year before the lottery was installed.

Agreed. The draft lottery system must be changed in order to fix the league properly.

There is no incentive for the bad teams in the league to win. I can’t believe they treat their ticket holders and fans like that.

The next best thing to 8th place in your conference is LAST place in your conference. That’s just the way things are set up in today’s NBA. So I can’t really fault Golden State (though I think they are wrong in thinking a 7th pick is better than teaching their young rookies that you play every possession, every game with the purpose to win AND, smart or not, tanking is dishonorable).

They should reverse and flatten the NBA lottery, and pick all 14 spots from the pool, with 9th and 10th seeds getting slightly more chances as a reward for doing well. Maybe weight the balls over the last couple seasons too.

Its not quite over with just yet. The balls can still bounce in our favor throwing someone from behind them into the top 3 and giving us their pick. We have nearly a 10% chance of that happening. Thats for the top spot. Chances go up for the 2nd and 3rd picks. Poetic justice, I think that would sum it up if the balls fell in our favor. Until then, enjoy the playoffs..
