The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. With their first selection in the 2012 Draft Utah selected Kevin Murphy, the senior guard from Tennesse Tech.
Age: 22
Size: 6-6
Weight: 194
Reach: 8-4
Wingspan: 6-7
Kevin Murphy is regarded as one of the better pure scoring prospects in the draft and overall a very good shooter with deep range. Ford see’s Murphy as a smooth athlete, with good shooting range, and excellent mid range game and good first step, but someone who also needs to add size.
Here are some scouting notes on Murphy as well from ESPN Insider:
“June 25 Update: The Pistons drafting at No. 44 could really use another shooter at the wings. Murphy was one of the best scorers in college basketball, shooting 42 percent from beyond the arc.
May 24 Update: NBA scouts are starting to give a closer look to Tennessee Tech swingman Kevin Murphy. Murphy is averaging an impressive 22 ppg, shooting 45 percent from 3 and averaging more than five rebounds per game.
His 50-point outburst versus SIU Edwardsville a few weeks ago was one of the best scoring performances of the season. Murphy looks a bit like a Rip Hamilton sort of player with much deeper range. He’s got a smooth athleticism that allows him to glide to the basket. He can score off the dribble, has a sick midrange game and shows both quickness and athleticism.
His lack of strength is an issue. So is the fact that he struggled mightily in Tennessee Tech’s three biggest games of the season, against Miami, West Virginia and Murray State.”

Thanks for your quick work putting this together. I do think this means an end to CJ in Utah for sure, but probably everyone thought that anyway. Hopefully we will get a chance to see him play this season, seems like a good pick for this position in the draft. I hope if he does have a three-point shot, the Jazz actually design some plays for that shot for a change. This seems to me that this pick is an additional indication that the deal to bring Mo Williams back is serious.
Poor mans Rip Hamilton with more range, if he pans out not bad value at the 47th.
Picks in the second round are always a total crap shoot anyways but take solace in the fact that Utah has a pretty good track record in the second round at finding good value and talent.
@ Deb
thanks, like you I just hope he gets a fair shake to make the roster and see some playing time. My gut tells me he will with our gaurd rotation being so aweful at times the outlook is pretty good on that front.
Also hearing that 3 team trade is all but a done deal and being reported on multiple fronts like at SI and USA today.
Yeeesssss!!!!! KOC better be on the phone drooling for Machado and Hollis Thompson! !!!!! Make it happen KOC!!!
I really like Murphy.
Don’t know much about him. He seems to hav e a nice shooting motion. Could be interesting, if Burks excels at the point, to have such a tall guard group.
@ Omar
yeah there are always some good undrafted free agents available after the draft, lets see if KOC can find one.
Look at the Kevin Martn comparison. Pretty much him exactly 6′7 about same weight and shooting comparisons are almost identical. Some people were saying they would be happy with Martin in his younger years and we might have got him.
