Marvin Williams is GOOD!

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

I am gonna make this short and sweet.  Since I criticize KOC for not making trades and being inactive, I am definitely going to defend him when he is active and making trades, especially since this trade was for a player I was begging for.

Think about all the post and comments complaining about Al and his iso offense hurting the offense of the team and the play of each individual player, with that in mind, imagine how a player’s game would be effected by 3 players getting starting minutes playing the same iso offense as Al.  Imagine 3 Al’s on one team!  Hortford, Johnson, and Smith, and even Teague to a lesser extent.  So you can even say 4 iso players.

In 57 games played last year, Marvin Williams had 15 games where he had 10 shots or more; 3 games where he had 12 shots or more, and 1 game where he had 15 shots or more.

Against the Jazz, up against the SFs he is replacing, Marvin Williams went 5/8 from the field, 6/7 from the free throw line, 9 rebounds, and 16 points.

One of Marvin’s best games was in an elimination game against Boston AT Boston:

6/13 from the field, 4/5 from three point land, 8 rebounds, 3 assist, 1 block, 1 steal, ZERO turnovers, 16 points.

With 3 or 4 iso dominant ball players.

Change of scenery, as a complimentary player, great shooter, 6′9, great pickup KOC!! GO JAZZ GO!!!

He played well in back to back elimination games to be correct:
5/9 from the field, 3/6 from three point land, 2/2 from the line, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnover, 15 points.

  2. Jake says:

Will this trade for Marvin Williams hurt out or chances at getting Danny Green via free agency?

  3. Omar says:

Not if Burks moves to the backup PG.

96 minutes between SF and SG:
Hayward 30 minutes, Green and Marvin 25 each, Carroll 16.

    48 minutes for PG:
Mo 28, Burks 20 (Burks can get some of Carrolls minutes if needed)

Sign Green, and figure out front court situation.

I gotta give you props OMAR for callin this trade before it even happened. I think this trade contributes a lot to our team because it gives another player to spread the floor for a front court. Good call.

  5. Omar says:

thanks @Jared. I gotta give props to KOC for being active if he signs Green I think the wing and backcourt are set…once they move Bell and Watson that is.

  6. KCJones says:

I like his size. 6′-9″ 245 lbs. Great size for a SF. I’m excited to see how he plays in the Jazz system.

  7. Logan says:

Does anyone know if he plays good defence . Also how athletic is he.

  8. I believe Locke was saying his primary quality is his defense.

Mixed reviews about his athleticism – Locke doesn’t get excited about it.

We improved 20 to 30% over last year’s team. Mo is an upgrade over Harris…but marginal. Marvin is a massive upgrade over Josh and CJ.

I believe Green coming is very UNLIKELY! If there’s one more move, it’s Al or Paul :(

  9. He was a number 2 pick so his athleticism must be pretty good. Draft express has a nice little review of his strengths and weaknesses written back in 2008, it sounds like he’s still pretty much the same player from back then, only his shooting has improved. Offensively it sounds like he moves well off the ball and likes to either catch and shoot or catch and finish off the cut. Really, he sounds a lot like AK on the offensive end (I don’t know how good of a passer he is though) with a better jump shot. Defensively he doesn’t get very many steals, but he does a good job of staying in front of his man and contending jump shots, draft express said that he plays conservative defense and doesn’t take chances on getting steals.
