Confusion Confusion Everywhere

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

2 Questions:

For discussion purposes let’s pretend Minnesota drafts Enes Kanter (Cleveland Irving).

Will the Jazz draft Williams or Knight?

I have heard people say Williams is the best prospect in the draft. I have also heard people say that he is a stretch four and will have trouble guarding the three. Who to believe I know not.

I already love Knight. His character, intelligence, quickness, agility, and size are all exemplary. He would be an upgrade over Devin Harris.

However, if Derrick Williams CAN play and guard the three then he may have more upside AND be more NBA ready.

So help me…….what’s the pick and why?

Now on to this whole Jimmer thing…….I’ve never really been on board for drafting the guy. Love everything about him (and I’m not even a BYU fan), but I just didn’t see him making a fit with the Jazz. After his workout in Utah I am at a loss. I see “experts” saying that he should be considered at 2 and 3. I see that he shut down Kemba Walker. I also see that he shot near 90 %.

Someone, preferably a non biased (here’s looking at you BYU alumni :) fan please shed some light on what we should place on Jimmer as far as numerical value in this draft. Are we saying that he can be our starting pg? Are we saying he can be our 3rd guard a la James Harden? What do we do?!

  1. If Williams falls to three, you take him without even thinking twice. He’s going to be a very good player who can play either forward spot, depending on match up purposes.

  2. Woody Palmer says:

If williams falls to 3 then it wont be as easy to pick him without thinking because I am sure the phones will start ringing and there will be some teams willing to give up a lot to get him. That would definitely make it harder to pick him.

  3. IMHO Jimmer would be a back up for Devin Harris for at least the next 2 years. If he comes on as strong as Jimmermaniacs think he will, he will have won the starting role by then. I think that his availability at 12 hinges on who we pick with the 3. If we go with Knight, I think Toronto picks Walker and Sacramento picks Jimmer. If we go with Williams (which I really hope we do) or a big like Kanter, then I think Jimmer will be available at the 12 (unless New York trades up to get him), and I think it would be a great move for the Jazz.

  4. For his trade value alone, he would be the best pick at three if he’s still around.

  5. Patrick says:

Here is the thing, if you feel that Williams is best available you draft him. If not, you trade down and draft Knight, so you get something of value with Knight. Why would Cavs trade up, to keep you from trading with Toronto, or someone else. The arguement was made that Williams can play both positions, well, we dont need another undersized PF, we have Millsap that can do that. So if its borderline, you trade down and take Knight.

Williams would have to be Hands down better than Millsap, or Knight would have to be not as good as expected. In my opinion Knight over Williams is much easier to decide than Knight over Kanter. Kanter can play two positions, increases our size and a solid back up C/PF, well they dont grow on trees. Again I guess it all comes down to personal opinion.

Jimmer, has yet to prove he is better than the other PG’s. I doubt he shut down Walker as others would have you believe. I have yet to find any news on that. Fredette is going to be good. Good enough to start, well, if anyone can it would be him.. Dont know that it would be on our team, or not but anything is possible.

  6. Colby says:

Williams would be picked solely for trade value and to get what we need. Jazz need a guard.
@Patrick Jimmer has done the opposite and has proven he is one of the best PG’s in this draft.

  7. Larry N. says:

Jimmer has not proven he is a point guard, only that he can shoot the ball, In the NBA they can clamp down on him and shut him off, then he will be a liability not an asset. He was never a team player in college, rather the byu team was a jimmer player, give him the ball and let him shoot.

I feel sorry for the athletes that had to try out with him here in Utah thier interviews were all about what they thought of jimmer. What did you expect them to say
with the press, his college coach and all the jimmer band wagon poping questions at them. That to me was one sad display.

  8. Kaleb says:

Wow, I completely agree with everything Larry N. said. I think that’s the first time that’s happened on UJ360.

  9. Colby says:

“Jimmer has not proven he is a point guard”
pretty much every coach and scout that has worked him would disagree with you.
I do agree with you in that I do feel sorry about the guys who had to work out with them but that is the price you pay in basketball. It happens every year, some years are worse than others. If the Jazz take Jimmer even at trading down from #3 a couple of spots, they will be more than ok and most importantly it will be for the long run and not, to quote Brandon Knight, “just a couple of years”

Williams, Chad Ford expained this in his insider article in ESPN today. NBA Executives break down each player in tiers 1-4. No one in this draft is considered a tier 1 player, that would be a Blake Griffin player, who is sure to be a all-star. There are two tier 2 players in this draft Irving and Williams, they are considered to be possible all stars, but for sure starters. Tier 3 players can be starters, but might take some work, that is where Knight, Kanter, Walker, Vessley, Leonard, and the rest of the top 12 are looking. What he is saying in his article is that a GM that will usually go off of a tier system like this one, but not always. What this means is that Irving and Williams will go 1-2 no matter what a teams needs are, but if by some miracle Minnesota doesn’t follow the tier model the Jazz would take Williams no matter what the need of the team whas because Williams is the best player availible. And KOC has said in several interviews that his goal is to take the best player availible when it is time for the Jazz to pick.

  11. pirate7212 says:

I would love to see the Jazz take Jimmer at the number 12 pick. There is no way that I would take him with the number 3. His shooting ability would opeing the floor for the Jazz that we have needed since we lost Korver and Matthews. I do think that he could end up being a great asset like JJ Barea was for the Mavs, he has the same tyoe of speed and size, and has a better shot.

  12. Patrick says:

Colby, you almost say something intelligent, then you stick your foot in your mouth. If your going to quote, you should use exact words. Most of us have heard that interview. Twist it how you want, if he comes here, and things run well, he will stay. Fredette may stay longer with a losing team, but you can never say that for certain. I will agree that Fredette has proven he is better than we all thought, which is what most coach’s and team staff will say. Not once have I heard anyone say that he has outplayed, or proven he is better than any other guards.

Larry, you are almost completely correct. Its been said that Jimmer can pass. We need someone who can open up the paint, and Jimmer can certainly do that, especially if they are locking down on him with two players. Is Jimmer the best available, I guess we will see in a week.

Pirate, its funny because many people are compairing Fredette to Korver. Both offensively and defensively. Korvers defense is why he doesnt play more minutes. I hope Fredette does not prove to have the same issues. Guess we will see in time.

  13. KCJones says:

Well, if Jimmer falls to three, we’d definitely have to consider him. Lol.

I’d be happy with him at 12. But I really think he’s gone before then.

And if he becomes a superstar drafted at 7, not drafting him at 3 will look pretty foolish. But, (it was a JOKE above), I do not recommend spending a 3-pick on him.
