Jazz get BBQ’d in Memphis.

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

Here are some observations I had about the game tonight.

Did the Jazz go to the movie before the game tonight?  If so they should have had less butter on their popcorn.  Favors and Marvin fumbled passes that if they would have caught would have been easy buckets, Mo and Randy lost the dribble countless times for no reason tonight, and rebounds were squirting out of our hands.

We got the stop we needed many times but failed to get the rebound.  Us not finishing plays resulted in numerous second chance points for the Grizz that could have been the difference in the game.

Free throws, stop giving the other team so many, take more.  This is bush league.

When the second unit came in during the first half they were all jacking up shots.  They were playing selfishly and not within the offense.  That is what happens when you don’t get to play then are trust in for only 8 minutes in 4 games.

It is refreshing to have the 3 ball drop.  FYI C.J. Miles is shooting 18 percent this season while Josh and Raja are playing pickup ball at golds gym somewhere.

Favors got some rebounds that i was like WOW, then he hit some jumpers and i was like, WOW WOW!!!

Marvin Williams has really disappeared after 21 points opening night.

  1. This team is a mess right now, on both ends of the floor.

The offense can’t seem to find an identity. Are they an inside team or an outside team? Are they an up tempo team, or a grind it out halfcourt team? Everyone from the point guard on down seems to be looking for his own shot first.

The defense isn’t able to get stops down the stretch, and just seems to come and go from one quarter to the next. Guys aren’t helping one another often enough, and just like in years past, the Jazz continue to foul at an alarming rate.

I place most of the blame on Coach Corbin. So many of the guys on this team seem out of sorts.

Jefferson is no longer the main focal point of the offense, and he’s having a difficult time adjusting.

Marvin Williams doesn’t really seem to know what his role is.

Millsap just seems to be going through the motions (probably daydreaming about the “good old days” with Sloan, D-Will, Boozer, Brewer, Memo, and Korver).

Kanter has lost all confidence in himself, and his splendid play in the pre-season is beginning to seem like a distant memory.

Burks and Evans are buried at the end of the bench. Carroll and Tinsley play significant minutes one night, and then don’t get in the game the next.

The Jazz need to settle on a 9 man rotation, and decide what tempo best suits the majority of the guys on the roster. It doesn’t make any sense to me that you start our two worst defenders in the frontcourt, and play our two most inconsistent offensive frontcourt players off the bench. You need to have both offense and defense on the floor at all times. I say start Jefferson and Favors, and bring Millsap and Kanter off the bench. Go ahead and continue to give Marvin most of the minutes at small forward (with Millsap and Hayward getting token minutes at the three spot each night). Mo Williams and Gordon Hayward are doing pretty decent as our starting guards, but Foye and Burks should be the tandem backing them up. Everyone else (Tinsley, Carroll, Evans, Murphy, Watson) needs to enjoy the game from the end of the bench.

I’m wondering how much different the approach would be if Hornacek were coaching the team rather then Corbin? Maybe it wouldn’t make any difference. We have a team of “nice guys” who appear to play soft.

  2. I think we are missin some pieces to the puzzle. We need to make a few moves now to, one get guys that are burried on the bench some time and two, find some consistancy. Marvin i though would be help but, thru the first four games you dont know which marvin will show up. One of are bigs need to go as well i would be against getting rid of both paul amd al at this piont depending on who we get for them. Just to free up minutes and, get some one that fits in with the style are back court wants to play. Also why did we stop give hayward the ball he was doing great tonight and we stopped going thru him that was crazy.

It all comes down to Corbin. Nice guys finish last is the saying that best describes the Jazz situation.

  4. Yeah there are too many players good enough for 25+ min. and none of them are able to get in rythym with less than that. Corbin has to give the most effective defenders and scorers their 30+ minutes or be a pleaser and lose. FO needs to get on this .

When the game started I had a terrible feeling. Even when we were up by 12 because Gasol and Randolph aren’t going to continue missing wide open 4 footers. If the Jazz players aren’t smart enough to realize they have to defend, then get rid of their worthless hides. This is one fan who is tired of waiting. I’ve been patient since 2003 and we are just going in circles. Other than the one trip to the WCF (which I was out of state at the time and unable to watch), we have gone nowhere. We have all this “potential” and so many players who are “potential all stars”. I could build a hall of shame with all the Jazz players who had potential and never reached an ounce of it.

I expect more out of every single player on the team except Hayward and Mo Williams. Those two are the only ones I see playing their hearts out while the rest (Al Jefferson) stand there and enjoy the show like a lazy piece of crap.

  6. @Kevin: You should move out of the state again! Maybe we would make it to the WCF. Who knows, if you move out of country we may win it all!

  7. Kevin says:

    @Mason

You have no idea how true that is. For example….the two years I was out of state: The Jazz went to the WCF, BYU beat the Utes both times in football, The Rockies made the World Series (or at least the Division Finals-Can’t remember which now), and the Penguins won the Stanley Cup. All my teams did amazing when I was unable to watch them play. Then I come home, and BYU loses to the Utes. The following year, BYU is losing to the Utes, and they go to overtime. They are playing terrible, and within 5 minutes of crossing the Idaho border, they win the game in overtime.

Oh, and the Jacksonville Jaguars had the best defense in the league and dominated all year and in the playoffs. Look at them now.
