Jimmer = Bust
Posted by: Mason Nichols on July 14th, 2012
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.Just over a year ago it seemed like everyone wanted Jimmer to be drafted to the Utah Jazz. Fans were putting enourmous pressure on Jazz management to draft Jimmer with their 12th pick. Some even wanted to use our 3rd pick on him to fill the PG position and then use the 12th pick for a servicable big man.
I praise some entity in the sky for having the Jazz draft Kanter with the 3rd pick and the Kings take Jimmer off the board to make things easier for Jazz management. If Jimmer was on the board at 12 many would have been enraged if the Jazz would have passed on him ( even though they would have passed on hiim because they are smart).
He is getting shut down in the NBA. He cannot run the point at all. He is not even a competent spot up shooter.
I hope he is remembered for his awesome playing time at BYU, not his struggles in the NBA spotlighting as Adam Morrison 2.0

Did anyone really want him as #3 pick?. He has only had one season so far, I would call an end to Jimmer just yet.
Don’t start jimmer bashing I mean I’m pretty sure it took Hayward almost 2 years to develop why should Jimmer be any diffrent . On that note he is with a horrible coach in Keith Smart(Dumb) and terrible kings team. Jimmer is an upgrade from harris any day and not to menchon Corbin would play Jimmer more than smart(dumb) does anyway. So Jimmer would be better in a Jazz uniform.
Summer camp players can be hot or cold. Give the kid the full season. But the Jazz draft was the right picks.
@Jake Hayward was better the day he came into the NBA then Jimmer ever will be sorry buddy just get over it. Jimmer would not get on the floor here either. He is not a PG but is only 6′1
Nah, not soon enough to call him a bust. Didn’t do great his first year, for sure. Bad system, full of isolation guys, coaching switch, bad management, team trying to move cities, and Isaiah Thomas #2 was just better. Not the best circumstances for him, but also he didn’t do much with his opportunities.
couple more years before he’s a definitive bust
Hayward was better than Jimmer I agree with you there I’m just saying it takes time to delovp at this level and Hayward struggled in his first season as did favors. So you cant start Jimmer bashing yet he hasn’t even played a full season yet. Jimmer would be so much better in a Jazz uniform becasuse Corbin would play Jimmer enough to let him improve how is player suposted to inprove when he plays 5 minutes a game like I said Keith Smart(dumb) cant coach
@Jake I defiantly agree with that! I do not think you can label him a bust yet. I also am glad you see you can not play someone limited minutes and expect them to improve. Unlike some people on this site who feel like Kanter will just magically improve with out playing. I do not think he needs 35 mins yet but 20 minutes he needs. But is that going to happen? No probably not because we just like to pick people at #3 and not play them and give them opportunities.
No, we like to win. Not just be idiots and play a guy for 20+ minutes a night just because he was picked at 3. Man, I’m glad you have zero influence in jazz management, or we would have no chance making the playoffs for a while. I agree that a guy not being able to improve without increased minutes, but please, saying we don’t give our guys opportunities is moronic at best. They are getting farmed just fine. Kanter got all the minutes he could play and deserved last season. After not playing in the nba for two years, he got all he needed. Will his minutes increase? Of course they will. I bet you were the type whining about Dwill not getting minutes, and look what happened. The jazz know what they’re doing. They’re not perfect, of course, but a ignorant statement like “we just like to pick people at #3 and not play them and give them opportunities” takes every ounce of credibility you never had anyway and throws it down the toilet.
The jazz compete, we don’t over play rookies just to appease fans who want to see rookies play. And guess what. Playing rookies more minutes than they need hurts them more than helps them.
The dog on jimmer is that unlike most rookies coming into the nba he went to all four years of college. Check the stats, EVERY rookie, but for a select few who come into the nba with four years under their belts DO NOT drastically if at all improve from their rookie years. Regardless if they were given limited minutes. I’m not calling jimmer a bust by any means, but will he be a solid nba player in this league? If an nba team wants their starter to do what jimmer did last year than yes. Improvement is minimal at best for four year college players. And a four year college player picked at number 8 in the draft was a bad move, imo. Wesley Johnson, JJ Reddick (he’s solid, but has made minimal improvement if at all since coming in the league, check his number if you don’t believe me).
Here’s a quote from David Locke,
“4 year college players are who they are their rookie nba year – 20 players studied – Rookie year EFG% and TS% 98% of career #’s are the same.”
Sorry guys, Jimmer is not a bust, but he’s a 3rd pg on a decent team, and a second pg on a bad team at best.
@Ben This is not the day and age of the NBA where you take someone at #3 and then sit them. They will not stay with the team just because they drafted them.Then we just used a very valuable pick that are very hard to get on a guy that is going to spend 3-4 years with us? Well then you just screwed up. Then if he goes somewhere else and demolishes the NBA everyone will be screaming at him then am I right? If Kanter ends up leaving us for lack of time/our development in him and then demolishes us every year will you be pleased about that? I agree if he does not produce he should not play. But how do we know he will not produce if we do not put him out there? You say he will get more minutes this year? Where are they going to come from?
tossing out that Jimmer won’t succeed because he is 6′1″ is a lame statement. There are several guys his height making a name for themselves in the league.
Also, isn’t Kanter going up against Jefferson daily in practice? If he is so good and Al is so bad then why would they not have traded Al by now and given Kanter the starting role?
@Kory name one that is white and not athletic?? Also do not try to say that Kanter is somehow so much worse then Al and that is why he is not playing. We saw last year with Miles,Bell,Howard that no matter how good Carrol or Burks played it did not matter because they were getting their time no matter what
Jimmer is in a horrible situation in sacromento the king need ti just do him a favor and trade him to the Jazz were we will play with open arms
Im sure this won’t be popular, but Jimmer is a lot like Blake Ahearn, just with more range. He is going to have to be a situation guy. Right team right system, like Orlando with Dwight. Now, I don’t know.
@Jake no one wants him that is not biased towards BYU.
@Omar that is spot on
@Ben – More time for any elite athlete can’t hurt. If they are getting pumped it should mean that they see the work they need to do. If they dont work harder after not succeeding they will never be an elite player anyway. As we saw last season Corbin isnt a good NBA coach and wouldnt play rookies no matter their ability
Changing his college game to adapt to the NBA is just such a big chore. I think hes athletic enough and obviously a great shooter. BYU killed him. as any college team would most likely. But if Rose would have had a solid roster and had jimmer play defense and use his team, I think Jimmer would be alright. He does have some special tangebles. I hope he makes it. but lets get real, thats small hope. especially with the Kings. Bust.
This post is stupid, you are stupid. What did you expect? Jimmer to go in his first year in a shortened season and be an All-Star? It takes time to develope. You think Kanter is so great but he if anything is the biggest bust in the draft. We should have taken Burkes and Leonard. Kanter is an idiot, so uncoordinated, Turkish, idiot like Okur! You either have talent or you don’t and Kanter my friend is and will be the only bust! Plus now we have a log jam at the center position… I hope we trade Kanter! Delete this post because you look like a big dummy haha
I still think that Jimmer is better of with the Jazz
I think many BYU fans wanted the JAzz to pick Jimmer, but not a lot of Jazz fans, that being said, he is not in a good situation in Sacramento. The guys commenting on the Summer League broadcast last night made some interesting observations about Jimmer. They said he needs to not fall in the trap of trying to become a point guard or something he really isn’t just to improve his viability in the NBA. They said he needs to remember he is a scorer and not lose his confidence in that. Hopefully he can find his niche in the NBA, I just don’t think it is with the Jazz.
I’m a BYU fan and a Jazz fan why is that bad?
Mark my words, BUST.
Kanter has at least shown glimpses of his potential.
@Jake, Jimmer would not be better off with the Jazz. We don’t even run plays for open 3 pointers. But the real question is… would the Jazz be better off with Jimmer? I would say no.
wow i am absaloutley amazed at the idiots that get on here and act like they know b ball and you can clearly tell they dont. i have coached the game and can tell you that Jimmer is with a stupid coach,,would be better off with the Jazz, shouldnt be wasted at the point should be developed as a shooting guard with his range. with that said,,Kanter is ONLY 19 give it a year or 2 and he will silence the nay sayers
The predictions on Jimmer are still premature for the reasons given. We made the right draft picks. In today’s game Kanter might work out just fine, but that is still premature until we give him more time. We can do without the “stupid” and “moronic” comments. What we get for Al and what we do with next year’s GS pick could tell a lot for our future. The addition of Mo and Ma I beieve were ingenious, but still won’t quite get us where we need to be.
