This offseason

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. This our place to voice our opinions and hopefully the front office will take them into consideration. Going into the offseason, what do you want to see as Jazz fans come next season?
After being swept by the Spurs, our Jazz team enters the offseason with a variety of unrestricted free agents, team options, as well as multiple players in the last year of their contracts with the Jazz. Considering that Cj Miles, Josh Howard, Jeremy Evans, Demarre Carol, and Blake Ahearn are all unrestricted free agents, who do you want to see resigned or let walk?

^^^^This is a good site that gathers the twitter accounts of staff involved with the Jazz and other random “tweets” about the Jazz. According to David Locke and Brian Smith, due to the recent play of Derrick Favors, Kevin O’Conner and Ty Corbin reportedly met with him during exit interviews and talked with him about the possibility of him starting next season. When asked if he had what it takes to be a franchise player, Favors answered “Ya, I do”. So, there’s that. The team holds an option for next year on Jamal Tinsley. Al Jefferson, Devin Harris, and Paul Millsap are all in the final years of their contracts with the Jazz. With those being the circumstances what kind of trades would you like to see the team pursue this offseason with all of these players under contract?
We also have the Mehmet Okur trade exception, totaling around $10,500,00 and the 47th, second round pick in the upcoming draft barring some lucky ping pong balls. Does anyone know the terms of Ty’s contract with the Jazz as well?
Anyways, its an exciting time to be a Jazz fan!

My thought is to trade those that you don’t believe have a future here. It really is that simple, they have expiring contracts, if we are not going to extend or offer a contract someone else will.
@browncoat, I agree but that’s pretty obvious. The question is who has a future here? Obviously Bell is gone either by trade or amnesty. I think it’s time to move on from CJ. We will obviously need to add another wing or two. I personally would not like to see Howard back, although I thank him for his contributions. The point guard situation is interesting. I would like to see at least one of the 3 replaced by either a rookie from the draft(somehow) or a promising young PG via trade or free agency. The only old timers I would consider would be Andre Miller(to train a young PG) or maybe Nash which is highly unlikely. We need scoring from the wings and I would think the Jazz should target Eric Gordon, Nic Batum, and/or Brandon Rush this summer in free agency for that purpose.
As far as the bigs, I don’t really care what happens as long as Favors is starting next season and we don’t do anything stupid to make that happen. If we have to trade Sap or Al then lets get an All Star and/or high draft picks in return. And if we keep all of them, then make sure that they all understand, especially Millsap, what that means and that they are all in. Financially, I would think at some point you have to let one go, but who knows. If we play our cards right and the players work hard, I think we are in the playoffs again and will have a contender in 3 years.
out of that group only keep carol. Ty doesnt play evans, so we should use the roster space for a defender /shooter
I agree Jazzeduponit. I love Jeremy Evans, but if he’s not going to get playing time, we need to let him go. Our team is desperate for shooters. Evans is a forward. I just don’t see how/where he fits in moving forward.
I really think he’s a great kid and want nothing but the best for him. It’s too bad cuz the kid can jump out of the building. But I don’t see how we can give him significant minutes.
I think he could do wonders for one of the bottom ten teams, just like CJ. But for the sake of our other young players I don’t think we should resign Evans. Would rather have him than CJ though.
@Nick and Jazzed – They need to work out what they are going to do with the bigs before making a decision on Evans. Feed him 5 meals a day, bulk him up and he could play 4 on the rotation if they get rid of Al or Sap
Favors should start every game for the Jazz moving forward. I personally don’t see Millsap being happy with Favors as the starting 4, Further, I think that Jefferson is the low post scorer we want Favors to learn from. Favors already has elite defensive ability, Jefferson has elite scoring ability. If Favors can learn from Jefferson he could be the best PF in the league. That leaves Millsap as a backup PF or an option at SF. If he is happy with that role, I would love to keep him on the team. If he isn’t happy with that role, we need to move him while he still have good value. I feel that the real need of this team is a PG who is a threat to score, but who is a top notch facilitator. I think that our shooters and our big men would markedly improve if they had someone who was getting them the ball when and where they were comfortable shooting it.
The other change I would make, is one of mindset regarding our bench players. I think we need to stop picking up hustle players who can’t shoot. We have had almost two dozen of them over the last decade, and they never work out. They are always likable, and good energy players, but in the end, you can’t rely on them to make a single shot. I think that DeMarre Carroll fits this mold. We have a real problem with outside shooting. If you look at the Spurs bench, it is full of guys that don’t have any NBA talent, other than hitting open shots. We need that kind of bench player. Someone who has a very narrow role and knows what that role is, and can consistently perform (like Kyle Korver) They don’t have to be elite defenders, they just have to hit open shots, and show that they at least try to do other things.
2 free agents I would definitely target in the offseason are Dragic and Gordon. Gordon would most likely have to be a sign and trade of some sort. If we got Dragic that would mostly likely mean Harris would be gone unless the Jazz plan to play him more at the 2-spot. Both guys will command a hefty paycheck in free agency, but I think the Jazz have the flexibility to do it. They would help our outside shooting situation and Dragic is just a fantastic fit for the Jazz system in my opinion.
Since outside shooting is the glaring, obvious need of the Jazz, I hope the Jazz told Burks and Hayward to shoot 1000+ shots a day in the offseason. I think Burks could be a legitimate outside threat, but he needs to grow into it. Other players we could target this summer to help from outside, I like Rush (as Bracken mentioned), Anthony Morrow (would require a trade), and Novak from the Knicks. I would imagine Novak will be sought after by several teams so there could be some tough competition there.
Trade Al or Sap and get Batum, Dragic and either Gordon or Rush. If we cant get Batum we need to make the Blazers pay a fortune for him. Try and get a draft pick in the trade
