Breakdown of the Phoenix 4th quarter

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

For all the talk about Kanter not being able to pass out twice in the 4th he had no one on the same side of the floor to pass out to. Our spacing is horrible in this 2nd unit. This has got to get better.

Foye could not stay in front of Dragic the whole time he was in. He would penetrate right into the lane at will. This is why Kanter got subbed out and it was Foye not being able to stay with his man that caused this

Tinsley did great but right when Al comes in the game he has Favors on Telfair in the paint and he does not get him the ball. This is the Tinsley I have seen with the 2nd unit. We need the Tinsley from the 1st half and he would help this team a lot. If Favors has a mismatch then you need to get him the dang ball. A 6′1 PG on him is a mismatch and this was during the time where we could not score.

Right off the bat Al does not get on his man so Favors has to stay with Scola which leaves Tucker wide open. This is a common theme throughout every game we have played and it seriously is getting beyond annoying. Why can we not get some accountability across the board? Al has 2 times in the quarter where he does not even box out and they get easy put back dunks.

Foye with a HORRIBLE shot and then between him and Tinsley they do not keep up with Dragic and Telfair. But this is the Foye that I saw when I watched tape on him. A lot of media people are surprised he can not play defense. But watching three games you could tell he could not guard ones cause he was not quick or fast enough which we saw tonight and he can not guard two or threes cause he is 6′4 and they just handle him with their size.

No idea why Favors comes out. He was not playing bad at all. But they continue to not run any plays for him. This is beyond baffling to me. He absolutely gets screwed by the coaching staff. There is no excuse for him to play 16 minutes. ZERO!! Here is a tweet from Zach Lowe. “Watching Utah-PHX, and Derrick Favors in the first half is in full “holy cow is this guy scary” mode.” He got screwed by the refs and had to come out of the game but there is no reason to only get 6 mins in the 2nd half.

Tinsley played horrible during the run. He played great in the 1st half. But even Boone said he was not getting the team into the offense and then at the end of the shot clock he would pass the ball. We had way to many shots with no time on the shot clock. Probably why we did so poorly for so long. But it was the starters that did not score.

Millsap with a lazy play on an in bounds pass allows for a steal on the perimeter. Something is up with him. I do not know if he does not like the role that he is currently getting. Even though he has not really deserved the time over Favors and has gotten it. But neither has Al. This was the first game that they did something on offense. But defensively they are still playing lazy and there is just not as much hustle out of Millsap that he has made his name on in this league.

We scored 2 points in 6 mins while Al was on the floor. So you can say all you want he is in there for the offense. And he had a good game but he still is not great offensively. He has had like 3-4 min stretches but he is yet to put together a fully dominate performance which is what we pay him $15 million.

To be honest Phoenix is not a good team. When they made this run it was purely on us. They were HORRIBLE on offense they could not run any sets. Honestly if this game is on the road to we win it? I am not so sure. We should have been able to handle this team. Phoenix allows the 3rd most points in the league and they have played some bad teams this year. So the fact that our offense struggled at times is not a very good sign. We can not have these lapses. Cause we saw with a good team what happens in Denver

Right on Dallan. In the first half, Suns gave Tinsley space cuz they did not honor his shot, so with no pressure Tinsley saw the court and was able to dribble and probe. However, in the 4th the Suns extended their D and suffocated Tinsley and that is why we saw the usually Tinsley not run the offense and turnover the ball. Thats why the Clippers scare me the most: Blake and Odom own Millsap, CP3 owns Al, and Bledsoe is gonna eat Tinsleys lunch, and Foye cannot guard a bigger, more athletic scorer like Crawford, plus DJ gives Al trouble, Al lowest scoring output last year was against Clips.

Corbin needs to be fired for not playing Favors more than 30 minutes. Favors thinks he can block every shot, Al just looks up at the rim as guys dunl and layup. Im so disgusted by Al interior D. As good as TWolves are playing without Love and Rubio, Harden to Houston, Davis and Monty Williams in NO, Jazz wont make the playoffs with Al and Corbin.

  2. Tinsley is a great distributor and facilitator when is fresh. Keep in mind Tinsley played 40+ minutes tonight, more than any player on our team.

    Here’s an idea:
Mo is not much of a facilitator, but he is a straight beast on offense. Our second unit has miserable offense.

Why not have Tinsley be our starting point guard, and have Mo Williams run the second unit, which sucks at offense?

    Starters:
    Tinsley
    Hayward
    Marvin
    Favors
    Jefferson

Tinsley brings the ball up the floor and calls a play, kicks it to Hayward or Marvin. Marvin and Hayward dish to Favors in the paint or Al on the left block (where else would he be?).

If Jefferson or Favors get doubled, they kick it to Marvin or Hayward and open up the floor. Hayward and Marvin are both great at driving to the hoop and drawing fouls.

    2nd unit:
    Mo Williams
    Foye
    Carrol
    Millsap
    Kanter

Mo brings the ball up the court, drives to the hoop if its open, runs a pick and pop for Millsap or Kanter (both of whom have great midrange games), or runs a pick and roll for Sap or Kanter. This moves Millsap to his natural position of PF where he can destroy bench units, and Kanter can shut down the paint. Williams and Carroll can defend the wings. Foye can maybe be a help defender.

Total rotation: 10 players. Send in Burks in the last 2-3 minutes and see if he can do anything.

To me, this seems like the best way to utilize the players we have. It gives our starting unit some defense and our 2nd some offense. It’s certainly better than what we’re doing now.

    @Nick
Depends on the other teams starting PG, Wouldn’t want Tinsley playing CP3 all night..

  4. Tinsley is a liability. He shouldn’t ever make it on the floor. We need to move one of our lazy bigs for a starting or equivalent PG so we can have two real PGs and then we could be dangerous. With the log jam at the 4 and 5 we often have 2-3 of our best players on the bench all game. The minutes and rotations stink. Favors is our best big and he continues to get screwed.

  5. @Jared: The problem is Tinsley is the only real point guard we have. Tinsley is averaging almost 5.7 assists in 19 minutes. Last season Tinsley had 3.3 assists and 3.7 points in 13 minutes.

Compare this with Watson, who had 3.5 assists and 3 points in 23.5 minutes.

Everyone talks about how poor of a shooter Tinsley is, but the fact is, he’s a better shooter than Watson. In fact, Tinsley shot 40% from the floor and 74% from the line last season. He’s definitely in a shooting slump right now. And for a player who was never good at shooting anyways, its pretty bad right now.

Better to have Tinsley than Watson becasue at least Tinsley can facillitate an offense.

Still, backup point guard is this teams weakest link next to pick and roll defense.
