Derrick “Party” Favors

We all know that Favors is due for a major role change and a major increase in minutes this year. But there are some questions that go along with that. I went to synergy to try to get a better look at what Favors could do well and what he needed to work on. We know that he is great on defense and the numbers reflected this. But a lot of times we say how he needs to work on his offense. Is this true? I defiantly think so in a way. I do believe that he is far better on offense that we give him credit for. Lets look at some numbers for him.

Shooting for Favors.

Iso and Post up: 36%

P&R 60%

Cuts 60%

O Rebound 55%

Transition 85%

The sad thing about these numbers for his shooting percentage are that 33% of his shots came from the spot that he is not the strongest in. Which is Iso and Post up. We have got to do a better job of getting him the ball in a movement based offense. Not what Jefferson wants or needs but what Favors wants and needs.

The next thing that everyone seems to think is that he needs to play 30 minutes. I would completely agree with this and have some numbers from last year that show why it is imperative for him to get 30 minutes a game. He only played 9 games last year over 30 minutes. That is kinda pathetic and sad to me. How can someone with so much talent not get any time on the floor? I am not sure. But here are his averages from the games that he played over 30 minutes in. Brief note these games came from all throughout the year.

Average PPG- 15.3

Average RPG- 11

Average PPP- 1.14

Average FGA- 10

Those are some very good numbers. Think of what he can do this year with time and the improvement from the off season. He is going to be awesome! The next part is a little long but I broke down every start that Favors got. I made notes on the game and I am just going to copy and paste them over. So some of them my be a little scattered cause I was taking them while watching haha. But I have said this before I think we need to start Favors next to Millsap. He gets limited opportunities next to Al. This also disproves the statement that people keep making that Favors was not ready to start at the first of the year. This statement is absolutely false! He was ready it was just the person we were putting him next to and the type of game we were allowing him to play. I put what number of game it was in the schedule. I apologize if I missed anything.

Gm 1 4-7 gets 3 shots within the first 4 mins then does not get the ball for a chance to score until the 2nd quarter. Gets one shot in the 2nd quarter. Gets three shots in the third quarter. One off of an offensive rebound other makes a good move across the middle. Of the 4 shots he makes 3 are while moving. The three misses all 3 are while posting up. Only 4 fouls could have played more. Only got 19 mins

Gm 2 1-4 gets 1 shot in the first 3 mins and then does not get the ball for a chance to score until 9 mins left in the third!! How was he supposed to produce anything? His only basket was off of an offensive rebound. Two of the shots he missed were a free throw line jumper. One was contested and he should not have shot it. But after not touching the ball can you blame him? He NEEDS to get that 15 foot jumper down. Only got 17 mins. Only had 2 fouls in the game so you can not blame foul trouble.

Gm 33 Only gets 5 shots in this game. Does not even touch the ball until 5 mins to go in the 1st half. It is on a transition fast break. The next two shots are tips. He gets a play ran for him the next offensive possesion and then plays the 2nd half and does not get a shot attempt until garbage time with 2 mins left in the game and we are up by 19. He had only 2 fouls this game as well.

When playing with Millsap

Gm 3 Gets 38 minutes. Gets 16 shot attempts. 7-10 that are made are because he was moving. 6 attempts in the first. All good attempts. 1 attempt in the 2nd even though he was killing it in the first. 4 shots in the 3rd but not until mid way through the quarter. So he goes from doing awesome to them not giving him the ball. He got 5 attempts in the 4th quarter. Made a bunch of jumpers in this game! He has it in his game he just has to be consistent with it.

Gm 15 Gets 42 mins and gets 16 points on 14 shots. Overall does not get many chances until the 3rd quarter. Then he gets his fair amount. Instead of establishing him early though they just let him stand in there and be a statue without caring if he touched the ball on offense. This can not happen this year. If he is ever going to develop an offensive game he has to see what will and will not happen with a shot. If we refuse to run plays for him then he is not going to develop offensively like we want. The very next game he only gets 17 mins. How was he supposed to give us anything of value consistently with how horrible he was treated?

Gm 18 Gets 26 mins and only gets 5 shots. Only had two fouls all game. He does not even get his first shot until 3 mins left in the 1st half. Then he does not even get a play ran for him it is just two tip in baskets. Every time he was given the ball in this game it was not in any type of good offensive position. Not because of his fault but because the players could not get him the ball in his spots. Better plays have got to be run for him and the players have got to get the ball in his hands in better positions. Not sure why it took till the 3rd quarter for us to get him in a position to get him a shot.

Gm 43 I think we all know this game! He gets 34 mins goes 9-9 on his FT attempts and grabs a measly 17 rebounds. He does well to get to the line this game which was awesome. This was really his coming out game. But once again he got taken down in minutes as soon as Al got back. Even though he had proven he could handle the minutes. He could handle giving it to the opponent.

Gm 44 This was more Kanter game then Favors per say but Favors still had a good game. He shoots 50 % from the floor and was able to get to the FT line. He still is best at moving and after the great game he had the game before it is good to see that he was able to get some shots early in the game. This was really the 1st game out of all of these that he was in foul trouble.

Thank you Dallan! Plus Millsap’s numbers jump big time with no Al. When Favors got those cheap fouls against Lakers, Kanter and Millsap out played Bynum and Gasol. That the best Jazz 3 man rotation with Favors, Kanter, Millsap getting the most minutes and Evans rounding out. P&R offense also help Harris put up MVP numbers, so Im sure Mo would benefit from a non-iso heavy offense.

  2. awesome post, this must have taken hours to put together… I’m hoping Favors somehow starts and takes over from the very beginning, it seems like he is ready to.

  3. Marcus says:

I just hope favors doesnt gain experience dominating with us and then pull a new nba er,”if we cant win im out”. Dwil anyone? Is anyone else tired of these new nba guys, kevin love the latest, that only wanna play with other stars? Whatever happened to building? Jazz of the malone era, the jordan bulls, the spurs the thunder… All these so called stars dont wanna put in work. they all want a dream team. its garbage. Thats why heres hoping we build around favors and he sticks around knowing this will be his team. I hope he dominates like no other since the mailmon

  4. Zach says:

Until Jefferson is traded or signs elsewhere, Favors will always be taking a backseat on this team. If I were Favors, I would be tempted to leave if I didn’t get to start at some point this season and if Ty continued to have nonsensical rotations. Fortunately, other teams haven’t really gotten a chance to see what Favors can do because of his limited minutes. Some of the eye-opening things he’s done are probably considered to be more anomalies than windows into his potential. This makes it easier to keep him here. I really think both Al and Paul need to go if Favors is going to stay.

  5. @Zach and Marcus I agree completely. It is ridiculous that they do stuff like this. Some of the players are ridiculous (Howard) they did try to build a team. They did try to make moves. Unfortunately I feel like our organization is like let’s just handcuff the youth that will work. Um no it will not. We have heard Favors say more minutes or he is going to be upset, we have heard Burks say more minutes or he will be upset. We have heard from Gordon family and people around him that he is not happy with his role that he could do more if they would allow it. At what point do we make a change and put total faith in the youth movement we were trying to accomplish? I mean maybe we go into training camp and see that our youth has makes some good strides and we make a trade. I just hope by the first of the season it is taken care of. I think it is doubtful but a man can hope right.

@Jazzdependency I am hoping I can role out a few more on Foye and on Marvin cause they are the least known about. I figured I would do Marvin against LBJ and Durant and see how he does. Not sure what I am going to focus on with Foye. Any thoughts on what you would want to see on Foye?

  6. Favors doesn’t get minutes because of Millsap. Millsap fans will say Favors should play the Center spot, but that isn’t where he wants to play. If we want favors to mature into the star I believe he can be, we need Millsap to be traded or accept a diminished role.

  7. @Jared maybe Favors does want to play the 4 but Bynum wanted to shoot threes last year. He did way good starting at C and he is scared to play against big C but how many are there really? Most he would be quicker then anyway. I just feel that just cause someone wants to play somewhere does not automatically mean he gets to.

  8. Logan says:

Everyone on the Jazz say that the two positions are interchangeable except on defense the center has the bigger load which favors likes anyway so I don’t see a problem. Plus in his interview he said that he just wanted minutes so I would believe that he would take them at center if he needed too.

  9. Good analysis, Dallan. It’s very true that he didn’t get a real chance to prove himself until closer to the end of the season. We had a garbage offensive system last year (Despite this, we were still in the top 10 offensive teams last year. I might be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Locke said we were 7th.

The Jazz know that Favors is ready to start. By not agreeing to sign an extension, it’s pretty clear that Millsap is on his way out (heartbreaking all the same).

The only reason they might start Millsap is to showcase his skills to build hype for a trade.

@Dallan and Logan: in his extensive interview with Locke at the end of the season, Favors said he wants to play Power Forward.

He did say that he would take all the minutes he could get, but prefers to play the 4.

  10. @nick I do believe he is a 4 and will be eventually but I think for this year it would be best for the team if he played the 5 along side Paul. Cause I really think everyone will be here for a while. So if they are going to be here what will be the best thing for the team. I just think it is Mo,Burks,Hayward,Millsap,Favors. I will defend my Burks position here in a couple days.
