Playoff series Vs. Boston. Played good Iso defense on both Ray and Paul. They are old and slow though. Rondo got a layup on him but it was good defense better offense. Paul Pierce a couple of times got the better of him.
He does not stay in his players hip pocket instead he tries to rely on his length and athleticism to get him back so where he needs to be. Does not work a lot of times. Needs to be more focused and up tight on his man.
How much of his lack of defense though was based on him not being in the offense at all? When you are not a defensive juggernaut sometimes you need to be involved in other aspects of the game.
At the first of the game when Marvin was getting pushed around by him. Carmelo was getting anywhere he wanted. Then he got involved in the offense. He picked up his defensive pressure. Goes along with what I said above. Get him focused on the offense and he will play great for you on the defense. I am not saying give him 15 shots a game I am saying let him be involved and think he is at least going to get the ball. So basically not the offense we run.
He plays consistent defense. Most of the time he is able to make up for his mistakes because he is so big and long. Durant and Pierce had the most success against him. Lebron posting up has a ton of success against him. His post up numbers were great overall only allowing 37% on those shots. But Carmelo and Lebron who were physical with him he could not handle. For all the talk of him being a physical defender I do not see it. I see if you are physical with him then he backs down.
The biggest thing that he struggles with was coming off of screens. It is interesting that they put this in a singular category for defense. A lot of the times that a player made the shot it was because one of his team mates did not help him out and step out. People shot 45% on him off screens. Which is decent overall but like I said the team defense of that aspect was not good.
