Enes Kanter Overlooked qualities

Posted by: Nathan Taylor on December 1st, 2011

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

Go to Youtube and check out Enes Kanter Euro Championships 2011. Sure he is seen outmuscling big Gasol of Memphis, and Noah of the Bulls, but one of the most beautiful yet insightful plays is when on one play Kanter initiates contact with Dirk Nowitzki 4 times. Kanter has incredible force generated from his internal and external obliques, hip flexors and glutes. Much like Bruce Lee could generate alot of force in a 2 inch punch Kanter likewise has quick full contraction of the aforementioned muscles enbabling him to with very little spinning or leaning in movement bang another player with alot of force. This is because force is more heavily influenced by speed than weight. Kanter has the weight and as far as core speed he goes from 0 to 60 really quickly, even if other athletes may beable to get to say 80, Kanter still smokes them in the beggining. Well who cares what does that mean anyway? Take a look at the play against Nowitzki and you will see. First it means as quick as Nowitzki is Kanter’s subtle spins and bumps are too quick to avoid, Second it means that when Kanter hits you it will actually hurt. Watch it and appreciate the fact that this guy will be able to initiate contact with NBA big’s and he will actually hurt them. Just watch the faces of the guys he plays against he is jarring their bodies, they grimace much like some one was just pounding away at their body with their fists. This is why guys will sigh when they see they have to guard Enes Kanter…

    Link?

I’m not sure about Kanter. I like the way he runs the court. His low center of gravity is just bothering me in this league of high jumpers though. He’ll have to rely on his body and strength to score.
I can tell you we won’t be seeing too many highlights of Kanter.

I really hope that he has a 3-point shot.

I think he’ll be great man-to-man defender, but not a great help defender.

But who knows…? The Euroleague is so awful, it’s hard to tell what’ll translate

@Nathan, “force is more heavily influenced by speed than weight” This is incorrect. The math formula for “force” is F=MA (Force = Mass x Acceleration).

As for everything else, I agree about what you are saying about Kanter. He has good speed.

@Ahhhhhh, low center of gravity isn’t always bad. I know one great who had a low center of gravity, and was short too, Sir Barkley.

  3. Henri says:

@Nathan, probably you meant “energy” rather than “force”.

@Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ouch ! Have you ever see an euroleague game once in your life ? My guess is probably not, at least because you wouldn’t have confused euroleague with eurobasket championships …

  4. KCJones says:

I think we’ve all overlooked how good of a wrestler Kanter could be. I mean, I remember the Karl Malone vs Dennis Rodman, but the UNDERKANTER?? Pile-drivers, half-nelsons, folding-chairs-to-the-back, clotheslines….oh man it would be awesome. When can I see this at ESA, Greg Miller, and where can I pre-order my tickets?!

I’m not quite sure why people are referring to Kanter as being short? 6′11” is good height. No he’s not 7′2”, but Jefferson showed us that you can do plenty of damage even if you aren’t 7′2”.

Kanter is a legit 6′11. He also comes to us as a 265lb 20 year old (theres your pain right there) He does show that he can push anyone around and then back it up with great footwork and 0 hesitation to go at anyone.

Kids going to be VERY good! He has shooting touch, makes his free-throws and is super physical. He’ll probably struggle with fouls a bit as many rookie bigs do, but he’s more than likely going to get fouled alot with his style of play. I just hope that we give him at least 20-25 minutes a game to grow quickly.

Draft night I thought for sure the Jazz were going to select Knight unless Irving or Williams slid to us, but I looked at what Calipari from Kentucky said about Kanter and it made me want him overall. I was so excited to see us grab him on draft night. You go for best talent and we got that in my opinion.

  6. I will go out on a limb here and just say it. Enes Kanter is FOR REAL. Last year I found myself analyzing Al Jefferson who loved already, Al’s footwork makes him insanely good against other bigs down low. Enes is better. Nathan has a very good point about acceleration. Anybody thats played the sport knows you do train for some endurance, but you focus on speed bursts. Its constant lateral and transition speed that gets a player open and beats other players to the ball/hoop. Enes has as full of a skill set as Dirk Nowitski. He has the Euro ball handling skills with excellent postup fundamentals. Watch for his rebound speed to outlet pass time and watch for his post moves. I especially liked this one at 05:57.

Also in that Euro league footage, notice how using that quickness and length he can pop out off screens, and has amazing body control and shooting technique. that IMO is another deadly asset. How do you gaurd that? You cant, which anybody that plays against Dirk knows.

I wonder if his 3 point shot is for real, take a look at this Kentucky footage

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5kAZL0Q3ic

Solid looking shooting. People mentioned the low center of gravity. I think its on purpose situational. He keeps the ball tucked, wathc how gaurds try to get the steal and then he explodes the second people go for the ball. Perfect fundamentals keeping the ball high when under the hoop. keeps his body straight up when defending low post also.
IMO the greatest thing about Enes is no matter what he will do what it takes to get better and compete. He is a winner that has been boiling for a chance to prove it.
He also has an amazing amount of experience at high caliber competition. If you havent seen the nike hoops summit vid take a look what he did before the ripe age of 18? seriously? We will see, but dont be surprised if he is rookie of the year.

  7. L.K.Anderson says:

Everyone watch. Burks will be the bonus of the draft.

  8. I agree, burkes was a STEAL at #12. teams bombarded Utah with trade offers. Hes got point gaurd skills with length of a forward. Im really curious about him in the NBA

  9. Guido says:

I think Burks would be the greatest stole ever, over than Enes.

  10. Jake says:

@ Ahhhh… Not to be rude but you are way off on Kanter… I mean WAY off! No Highlights? lol he’s going to be a monster and handful just like he’s shown in the euro basketball against NBA players.

The only thing that keeps this guy from being a double double guy right out the gates is sharing play time, and maybe foul trouble. Rookies ussually struggle with fouls, and consider his style of physical play and he might get some calls against him. Millsap struggles but he’s fairly physical defensively as well.

  11. Jake says:

I expect his rookie year to be 12-15ppg and 7-10 rebounds. If he gets 25 minutes a game he’ll easily do that. I wouldn’t think it a stretch to see him in the upper 18-20 points per game and 10 rebounds if he get 30 minutes. If he only gets 10-15 minutes obviously that changes everythin but he’ll still give you 10ppg and 5-6 rebounds.

Play the guy he’s going to be like Karl Malone. Hard fighting monster and soon to be wrestler lol. Go Kanter!

  12. Gerald says:

Kanter has a good jab step, a good up-and-under, a good spin to the basket move, he can bump and turn-around jumper, he finishes on both sides of the rim, he uses the rim when he is down low to protect his shot, and he is always following the ball. He puts people on his hip and puts them off balance. Malone and Barkley did that all the time. He can nug them with his arms, but his elbows are so low that there is nothing the defense can do about it.

  13. I think burks will be the better player but it kind of saddens me that they aren’t allstar calliber guys at all burks I think will be better from the get go he has more skills then kanter right now but give kanter about two or three years and he will be a solid player in this league

  14. Gerald says:

And with that Jazzed uponit, I remember that I forgot that he has a baby hook, he also has a shovel-push shot. In that video you can see he has jumping range, not so much height though. And you see he has a step back and he has shooting range. I think that shooter’s range is going to be the most important for his career. He likes to go inside because of his strength, but having a mid-range game is going to be something for his career.

  15. Im impressed with all of his moves. I like his patience for plays to develope and his decisions of when to attack. I think he could be unstoppable with that range. Oh yeah, that guy he dunks on in the first video i posted at 05:57… Marc Gasol LOL

  16. Jake says:

Trevor apparently you think that Kanter which was the number one pick in many peoples eye’s is going to do worse than the 12th pick over the first 2-3 years? Um I guess you haven’t watched what this guy can do. I like your fiath in Burks, we’re all loking to him as being a real help, but c’mon man…. Give Kantor the credit he deserves. He needs some playing time but bull in a china cabinet!
