Are they really woes?

There has been talk about the woes of Derrick Favors, that he isn’t scoring like he should. But are they really woes? Watching the game tonight Favors didn’t score a lot, So what is the cause of this. It is simply the fact that Derrick is not a go to guy yet. With a guy like Paul Millsap on the court Favors gets very few passes. The majority of Favors points came from offensive rebounds. If you flashback to the Preseason game in Portland with the young players on the court Favors was a go to guy and showed it with his numbers 25 points 12 rebounds and some blocks. Don’t lose hope Favors will be a great player.

Nathan, I think that’s a fair point. Favors certainly has a lot of development to do, but I think he’s got the potential to be a very good player. The Jazz will be patient with him, I have no doubt. They traded Deron Williams to get Favors, so there’s no way they wouldn’t be patient. As to whether Favors can become a great player, that depends on his drive. I hope he wants to be great.

  2. When we first got Favors I was pretty high on him. I still think he’s a fantastic rebounder, and is going to one day be among the best in the league. But some games he’s just a ghost, I mean barely even there. Tonight was a tough matchup for him because he started at the 5, when he is clearly undersized for that role.

Still, he really blew an opportunity to prove doubters wrong in this game. Franchise Power Forward of the future? From what we’ve seen thus far, no. But I’m not about to give up yet. Whatever he ends up doing, he’ll do it well. But I don’t see him as a dynamic scorer anytime soon.

Still, I trust the Jazz management enough to give the kid time. And that’s the thing to remember–last year Favors was (I believe) one of if not THE youngest player in the NBA. It will be a few years until any real conclusion can be made.

That being said, he needs to work on really BEING THERE when he’s on the floor. He can’t pull disappearing acts like he did tonight. Still, for Kanter and Favors, the sky’s the limit.

Everyone’s wanting or expecting Favors, Kanter, Haywood, Harris, Raja, Big Al, Millsap, etc. to consistently score points every night. Sometimes I think people forget there’s only one basketball allowed on the floor at a time. If someone gets on a hot streak, like say Millsap has done lately, others are going to score less. Favors doesn’t need to go out and drop twenty points every night yet, just execute consistently when the play is there to be made. If he, Kanter, Hayward, etc. reach that point on a consistent basis then they will get their share of bust out nights every now and then.

Just a little info, there was a stint where very little went through Millsap offensive tonight. Second, for Favors to be a real beast size won’t matter. Al and Millsap are both short for their positions, so the size card should never be used if you know what I mean. Last the ball doesn’t come through you when your talking rebounds. I like the kid, just want to see some fire from him.

I agree Patrick. He has looked pretty timid lately.

  6. Good point Pat, size is often just an excuse. But I don’t think size is an issue with Favors at all, unless you think we’re grooming him to be a future center? Seems unlike since we’ve got the Big Kid from Turkey.

Favors is 6′10″, 2″ taller than Millsap. He’s the perfect size for a Forward. Just needs to bulk up so he can have more on the court presence.

As for the “fire” sometimes Faves has it and sometimes he doesn’t. He had A LOT of fire at that game where he got tossed (which was such bullish*t). But then against Portland he pulled a disappearing act.

A lot of people say “Bring in Malone” to teach the young bigs. Well, I think we’ve got some of the best teachers around in Millsap and Jefferson.

Now that you bring it up Nick, if you think about it, it seems like he has been playing timid since the game he got tossed. Maybe he’s a little afraid of letting loose as a result?

  8. @AG, I think that might have something to do with it. Even though he got tossed on a ridiculous call, I remember listening/watching the post game interview with him, and he seemed like totally crushed and disappointed in himself.

I think he got an epic chewing out from the coaching staff. At least as far as throwing the ball into the stands is concerned, I’m SURE the front office did NOT approve of that lol.

I’m confident he’ll come out of it. You can’t work with guys who have work ethics like Millsap and Jefferson and not have some of rubb off.

  9. I don’t see favors being undersized if favors is under sized then so is big al at center. He has a reach over al and simlar body I wouldn’t mind seeing favors pplay a bit more at center until developes that ten or fifteen foot jumper you need at power forward. I will agree though he does play scared after that dallas game I was hoping the opposite would happen to him, and he would get meaner but he would snap out of it. I was impressed on how he ran the court the second half during the portland game not to many bigs can run like that especially on are team al doesn’t run kanter doesn’t run milsap and favors get up the court very well though
