Meet
Jimmer over Jazz?

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.Whats the deal? If you buy tickets for a JAZZ GAME cheer for the Jazz! I was at the game and I thought I was at a game in Sacramento. The cheers for Jimmer were deafening, I cant imagine how you would feel as a player. Its like having an extra road game. I was there about two hours early and there was 10 times the people at the entrance to the Kings locker room than at the entrance to the Jazz locker room. Jimmer fans stood there for over two hours and Jimmer never came out till the game started, HA I laughed about that for a while. It is ok to cheer for him when he is introduced, but please don’t cheer “WE WANT JIMMER” with 30 seconds left in the game. My favorite part of the game was when Jimmer got blocked by Millsap twice. But listen if you love Jimmer enough to cheer for him when the game is that close, do us all a favor, move to Sacramento.

Nathan,
I agree with you completely. If these were truly BYU fans they would have been at the game in Provo trying to encourage the BYU team to win. Jimmer now plays for Sacramento, not BYU, They are no different than the hordes of Laker fans that show up at the ESA to cheer for Kobe and we all know what low lifes they are.
Whoa. Cheering for Jimmer is NOT like cheering for Kobe. If you sincerely think it is, then wow…. I agree that it was disgusting hearing Jazz “fans” chant for Jimmer at the end, and it was jive how they cheered for him all game long, but come on! I think Jazz fans are mature enough to understand the difference between Jimmer and the stupid lakers. If you can’t see the difference, then set your emotion aside and think. All of us fans wish to get Utah recognized for almost anything in the national media. We finally get a little hype for once vicariously through a former BYU player, and you all freak out not being on the Jazz. Obviously we need to cheer on our Jazz louder than an opposing player, but enough of the whining. I was there too, and if I remember right, the Jazz won!
I think if you were to make BYU fans participate in a lie detector test, and you were to ask them if their true loyalty was to Jimmer or the Jazz, a significant number would say the former. Obviously, they can feel that way if they like, but if that’s the case, then they should go purchase Kings jerseys, become full time fans of Sacramento, and not pretend to be Jazz fans the rest of the time.
You could tell in post game interviews that some of the Jazz players were a little taken back by the love that “Jazz fans” showed an opposing player, on their own home court (though they gave politically correct responses to reporters in the locker room after the game).
This is the second time this season I’ve been disgusted by a small, but vocal contingent of my fellow “Jazz” fans (the other being the treatment of Deron Williams).
As a true Jazz fan, I would have been wanting Jimmer in the game in the last 30 seconds as well. Who wouldn’t want his 36.5 FG% taking the last shot?
I agree with everything here except the argument that cheering for Jimmer is any different than cheering for Kobe or Lebron. It’s the EXACT same thing. The Kings, Heat, and Lakers all have one HUGE thing in common, THEY are the enemy. I don’t care if Jimmer lived in Utah once and attended BYU. His jersey says “Kings” on it which in turn means he no longer represents Utah in any way, shape, or form. Guess who else lived in Utah for a time and played for a local college! Andrew Bogut (a former #1 overall pick). Not once have I heard the level of support for him as I did for Jimmer. Oh, one other guy comes to mind too, Andre Miller. Again, I’ve never seen hoards of Ute fans pack the arena with the sole intention of cheering for him and his team. Jimmer is gone, get over it.
So you get mad at fans for not showing love to an opposing player a few weeks ago(Deron),and then you get mad when they show love to one this week (Jimmer). Whether or not you agree that Jimmer should be cheered, if you thought Deron should have been cheered then you need to try and see how similar that is. Jimmer wasn’t a Jazz man, but he WAS a huge college star, and Utah supports it’s colleges. In either situation, the opposing player was wearing the other teams’ jersey. Think this through before you get too hard on the Jimmer fans.
Also, the argument about not hearing as much about Bogut and Miller as we did for Jimmer, that’s a product of national media as much as anything else. It makes just as much sense to compare their jersey numbers and complain about their numbers not being the same as it does to complain about how much support they received post-college. It makes no sense at all. Jimmer was dropping 50 points in games on National TV. Bogut was dominant, but he wasn’t consistently hitting 35 foot three pointers. All of the arguments against Jimmer make no sense. Again, I am a huge Jazz fan, and I ONLY applauded Jimmer when he was introduced during starting lineups cause I wanted the Jazz to dominate in every way. But do yourselves a favor and create better arguments against those who supported their hometown hero.
Again, Kobe is not the same as Jimmer. If you want to use the logic that they both wear the other teams jersey, then you better not say that people should have cheered Deron. It goes both ways.
Show me where I said people should have cheered for Deron the way they did for Jimmer! NEVER said it. The problem I had with people booing Deron is the same problem I have with people cheering for Jimmer, it went on THE WHOLE GAME! Boo or cheer during intros, fine, but doing it the whole game is not only annoying, but in the case of the Sacramento game, disheartening to our own team. Playing in your own arena packed with fans pulling for the other team is far worse than playing any road game. At least then you KNOW and EXPECT the other players to get more support. Maybe I’m a little old school in my beliefs, but once the ball goes up EVERY OUNCE of energy and support should go into supporting the home team REGARDLESS of where any of the opposing players played their college ball.
First of all, let me say, I think Jimmer is a good guy, and I hope he has a great career in the NBA.
I didn’t expect Jazz fans to cheer for Deron Williams (outside of introductions), but I was disappointed they chose to boo him every time he touched the ball. He was one of the greatest players in the history of the organization, and did a great deal in our community off the floor as well. I thought it showed a lack of class on the part of some of our fans to boo him. I thought it showed an equal lack of class to boo Jimmer. The difference in this situation is that the crowd didn’t cheer after every made basket Williams scored, and wasn’t shouting for him to be put back into the game, when he was off the floor in the fourth quarter. That was a real slap in the face to the Jazz players on the floor that night, trying to win a game for “their” fans.
I’m glad Utah supports it’s colleges, but Jimmer is now in the NBA, playing for a team other then the Jazz, and this is why you shouldn’t cheer for him anymore(unless, of course, you are a “genuine” Kings fan).
Yeah, the Jimmer love is pretty ridiculous. It’s not like he’s even some longtime Utah representative that’s now elsewhere. He grew up in New York. It’s glaringly xenophobic to cheer for him just because he’s Mormon and went to a Mormon school. He’s the damned enemy.
You people are getting way too edgy. Probably most of the Jimmer fans were kids who watched him play every year. Kids think differently and don’t see the big picture. And by the fans cheering for him to come into the game probably made him nervous enough to miss the winning shot. This is supossed to be a game for entertainment. Let the kids and fans have fun. Besides that they filled the arena didn’t they??
Not edgy, just disgusted. And yes, they filled the arena, but half of them were pulling for the opponent. It says a lot when even the players were taken back by the Jimmer love.
