Meet
Defensive 3 : Favors, Hayward, & Millsap

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.I think we’re going to find as the year progresses that the best lineup the Jazz can put together with who they currently have is:
Mo Williams (PG), Gordon Hayward (SG), Paul Millsap (SF), Al Jefferson (PF), Derrick Favors (C)
Favors, Millsap, and Hayward bring a lot of defense. They’re also halfway decent at getting to the foul line and making their free-throws. Same goes for Mo Williams. Jefferson belongs because he is an offensive weapon, where Favors brings the defensive aspect of their front court. Millsap, Hayward, and Mo all have good perimeter shooting, and I think it’s going to improve as the season progresses. I could see everyone of those guys getting 35 mpg and I believe it would be totally justifiable. Particularly with Hayward and Favors being known long-term investments, or at least for another season after this one.
I think a good bench squad could consist of Tinsley/Foye/Burks/Williams/Kanter, or Tinsley/Burks/Carroll/Evans/Kanter, or Tinsley/Foye/Carroll/Evans/Kanter. There are combinations there that favor defense and one combination that would have moving the ball down the court fast with a lot of options that can penetrate and/or create shots for themselves.
I think once Corbin starts going back to his ‘big’ lineup, that is with Millsap, Jefferson, and Favors in the front court- the defensive end will improve and those other adjustments will be easier to make and justify.

I forgot about Marvin Williams. Really, the backup unit could like any of the following combinations:
Tinsley, Foye, Williams, Carroll, Kanter
Tinsley, Foye, Carroll, Williams, Kanter
Tinsley, Foye, Williams, Evans, Kanter
Tinsley, Burks, Williams, Carroll, Kanter
Tinsley, Burks, Carroll, Williams, Kanter
Tinsley, Burks, Williams, Evans, Kanter
Foye, Burks, Williams, Carroll, Kanter
Burks, Foye, Williams, Carroll, Kanter
Foye, Burks, Carroll, Williams, Kanter
Burks, Foye, Williams, Evans, Kanter
Burks, Foye, Carroll, Williams, Kanter
anyway you get the point… way more combinations that one realizes
The big 3 works because Favors can cover up Als bad junction D and allows Millsap to stay closer to the perimeter to defend shooters. The Al/Sap as starting C/PF is getting worse and worse. Their defense is weak.
Just throwing out a trade idea or two for fun:
Al Jefferson and Earl Watson to Toronto for Jose Calderon and Ed Davis.
Paul Millsap, Alec Burks, and our two first round picks in next years draft for Rajon Rondo.
Two deep depth chart for first trade idea:
Favors/Kanter
Millsap/Davis
Marvin/Carroll
Hayward/Foye
Mo Williams/Calderon
Two deep depth chart for second trade idea:
Jefferson/Kanter
Favors/Evans
Marvin/Carroll
Hayward/Foye
Rondo/Mo Williams
I would like to see these 5 starting, finishing and playing at least 30 minutes a night together:
Burks, Hayward, Milsap, Favors, and Jefferson from point to center.
Our 2 main offense, put Hayward in the pick and roll or dump the ball into one of the big guys. I wouldn’t mind seeing Hayward be each game closer.
@Josh – I would love that trade
Something needs to happen soon. If Al isn’t hoisting 20 shots a night he’s just a defensive liability, and honedtly he doesn’t fit any other type of offense, especially an up-tempo, push the ball up the court type. We still dont have a pg who can run an offense or a good pick and roll, though I like Mo’s toughness, defense, scoring ability and threat from three. I don’t want the ball in his hands as much, and I don’t want him taking so many shots.
I have a trade idea……let’s trade Al Jefferson to the bench for some wins.
@Kevin lol. Coach should seriously try that. At least it will be practice for when he finally DOES get traded.
I would love a Big-Man rotation of Favors-Millsap to start with Kanter off the bench and Evans sometimes. They would all get about 30 minutes a game.
Al seems to be applying for Boozer’s old ‘Matador’ job out there.
I’m starting to wonder why any other team would want to trade for Jefferson? I’m positive other GM’s know his abilities and limitations and see everything we as fans are unsatisfied with and have the exact same concerns. The only reasonable trade for Jefferson would be Boozer and that’s not going to happen. But for Boston to trade Rondo for Jefferson??? get real.
Take off the fan glasses and post a REAL trade scenario and there really isn’t one for Jefferson. Jazz will ride him throughout the season and see what comes available in free agency to fill any holes. Hopefully they do send him to the second unit where he seems to post a better FG% and let the starting five center around defense and ball movement. If Corbin is the coach for that job I don’t know. Takes a very strong minded coach and Corbin seems to cater to the veterans. Lots of uncertainty this year could be lucky to reach 30 wins.
Like I said, Mike Wilbon said on espn that he would trade Al Jefferson to the Bulls for Charlotte’s future first round pick. (like 2015 or something) Which is pretty good because it would probably be a top 5 pick. That would also mean the Bulls would have to amnesty Boozer.
@Tyler – the boston trade was for Sap Burks and 2 first rounders, not Jefferson. I would make that trade, Id also make the Raptors trade but I dont think Toronto would. Bargnani and Al playing D together would be hilarious. @Millslapped – I’d also make that trade but not sure how the salaries match up
@disco – that’s giving up wayyyy to much for a guard who may not stay just as D Will. Remember your proposing the trade your always going to give up more unless the other team is desperate. Boston would want Favors and Burks for Rondo plus draft picks.
Jazz have Boozer, fans complain about injuries, Jazz upgrade to Jefferson fans complain about D. stop complaining. We’re stuck with a scoring big who can’t play D. Millsap maybe trade-able but I think fans over-value him, he has proven throughout his career he can not handle the starting PF role without a dominant scoring Big playing along side him.
So really who is going to trade an All-Star for that?
