Burks and Kanter play poorly in opener

As I write this, there is about 1 minute left of our first Summer League game. We started out kicking the Pistons’ asses, going on a 17-0 run. Now we are down 10. The score isn’t what matters for these games, though. It’s all about player development.

So the bad news is that our sophomores, Enes kanter and Alec Burks, are sucking hard. Kanter is getting crushed by Drummond, and Burks is getting crushed by, well, everybody.

Stats:
Alec Burks: 17 mins, 3 points, 0-6 shooting, 0 assists, 4 turnovers, -26 efficiency.
Enes Kanter: 27 mins, 3 points, 1-6 shooting, 5 rebounds, 4 turnovers, -22 eficiency.
Kevin Murphy: 21 mins, 7 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, +14 efficiency.

Pistons stats:
Andre Drummond: 27 minutes, 4-6 shooting, 8 points, 4 steals, +21 efficiency.
Kim English: 29 minutes, 5-9 shooting, 18 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, +21 efficiency.

THis is just the first game. But still, it does not bode well. Very bad perfromances from Alec Burks and Enes Kanter. Thoughts?

Seriously. English is a rookie second rounder and made us look terrible. Kanter is not ready to start yet. Hopefully there is a contract in the works for big Al. Kanter got blocked by Drummond over and over and over again. He needs some serious work. Played pretty good D in the first half but stood around like a big dumb idiot in the second.

  2. JRN5150 says:

Michael Stockton was surprisingly good against Brandon Knight on D. Showed he can knock down the J and is tough as nails. Ahearn showed he can shoot but was a very poor passer in this game. Carroll played similar to how he did last year for us. A little bit disinterested on offense but had some good hustle plays on both sides of the ball. Salah Mejri is a guy I was really excited to see but kind of dissapointed me. Played good D but couldnt get a rebound for the life of him and was less than stellar on Offense. Hopefully we improve tomorrow.

  3. As you may know from my previous posts, I’ve never been that high on Kanter. I don’t think he will ever be worthy of having been the third pick in the draft. He played 28 minutes, shot 1-7 from the floor, only had 5 rebounds, and finished with 4 turnovers. I realize this is summer league, but the guy just doesn’t have much athletic ability.

I’ve also always said, Burks is a shooting guard, and not a point guard. Again, it’s only after one game of summer league, but 1 assist, and 4 turnovers. Ouch!!

Kevin Murphy also struggled, shooting 2-8 from the floor. He was totally outplayed by Deron Washington, who connected on 4-5 shots, and had 13 points. Murphy is a rookie, so I will cut a bunch of slack, but he only one assist, and that reminds me of Morris Almond, which is a bad thing.

I think this 7′1 kid named Salah Mejrl might be a jewel in the rough. He outplayed Kanter today. He had 3 blocked shots, 6 rebounds, and scored 4 points on 2-2 shooting. He’s somebody too keep an eye on.

  4. I couldn’t watch but I did follow the stats. Deron Washington had real solid stats. Ahearns 100% shooting percentage was good, he needs to get to the free throw line more. Kevin Murphy shot a lot but had a low %. Burks turned it over a little too much! I like how most players got good minutes to be evaluated.

  5. If Kanter doesn’t really step up his game, and impress the coaching staff in summer league, there is no way the Jazz will trade Millsap or Jefferson this summer.

  6. Omar says:

Wow! I was expecting to read something like this, but not to this degree!! Chillout people, it is Summer League. The only dissapointing aspect was that Burks DID NOT play the point. Adhern, Stockton, and Green were running the point—NOT Burks. Burks finished with 10 points, he got those in ONE minute! Relax, if Burks wanted to get 30 he would, In glad he did ballhog and get his, two of those shots were late in the shot clock and he got 2 early fouls, so he couldnt be as aggressive. When he had to take over he did!! Hes not there to dominate the ball, hes already made the team, he just was playing in the offense, just like Carroll. Carroll passed up a ton of shots, hes not there to get his, those guys are there to help run the offense NOT put up numbers!!!

There was this guy who averaged 20 points a game in Summer League …. they said he was the next Larry Legend….that man….was Adam Morrison!!! Haha 20 points per game in SL. How has his career turned out?! Its SL.

How many people actually watched the game?! Of all the years Ive watch SL, in all the games, NOT ONCE have I ever seen a quadruple team?!! I couldnt stop laughing, they sent 3 guys to help on Kanter!!! Kanter backdown Drummond with ease, he got blocked, when they sent a second player. After Stockton hit the three, Kanter got single covered and scored, when they cheated later, Kanter passed out to Adhearn for a wide open three. Kanter just needs to manage getting double, tripled, and quadrupled team!! He can score one-on-one, look st the game @LA against Bynum. He just needs to learn how to pass out of double + covers. Hey, Al still hasnt learned how to do that, 8 years into his career. And where the hell were the cutters when Kanter was in the post drawing 4 guys?! No pick and pop with Kanter either. Kanter commands a double+ team, once he learns how to pass, lightsout. Its SL, you do not go into the air to challenge players going to the rim to get a dunk, you just let them dunk if they are not in front pf you.

Its Summer League!!! Game 1. Relax.

  7. Omar says:

*im glad Burks did NOT ballhog and play selfishly.

  8. I’m basing my assessment on everything I saw from Kanter his rookie year, and not just todays performance. Sorry guys…but what I see in Enes is a lifetime back up center (at least on a good team).

  9. Jake says:

Oh Nick knows crap… what a stupid post this is garbage…. Just kidding I thought I would post a response the way that nick knows crap and a bunch of others respond to everyone else…

Now my real response. That is very dissapointing, but when players are trying to get any kind of rythm together the stats and game outcome mean very little. We aren’t looking for isolation plays that you can be in your own rythmn its akward ball thats all off rythmn when you haven’t had repetition to get into a groove together. At the beginning of any team scrimage with other teams it just feels horrible and even embarrasing. its that first awkward game or 2 that really helps everyone realize the focus and synergy they need to creat in practise to have it take shape in games. I wouldn’t worry to much yet. It’s tuff to run a system and click with rythm with a bunch of new players. Pick up ball is different, but thats not what they’re there to do. Kanter is still a beast no matter what anyone says, and burks doesn’t need to prove himself, we already saw what they can do last year, and time on the court will improve them both.

  10. I’m not sure what Kanter’s worth is around the league, but I wonder what a combination of him, and both of our first rounds pick next season could yield?

    Just thinking out loud.

I’d really like to see the Jazz get a young point guard with a bunch of potential to groom behind Mo Williams.

  11. *first round picks* sorry…

  12. Jake says:

I think Kanter would have to prove to be an asset before it yielded much, but as soon as he proved his worth we wouldn’t let him go, lol

But to answer your question, no idea, probably not a ton, I wouldn’t do that deal if it meant giving up a top 4-8 or something in that range… Of course a 1-3 pick is a trade for big talent so I would say we either have our center of the future, or we have our backup center of the future lol. GGM’s don’t like to give up on their projects so their track record/resume looks dirty.

  13. Jake says:

Jason are you serious? Anyone who reads your post and is bothered by grammer issues is just a jerk… Don’t help them make this board have to be perfect by correcting yourself.

  14. I figure the two draft picks next season will probably be mid-first rounders (likely somewhere between 10-20). I would trade Kanter, and both of those picks, for a package that contained a legit young point guard like Lillard, Holiday, Knight in Detroit, Collison, Augustin, Lawson, Bledsoe, Thomas in Sacramento, or Beaubois in Dallas.

  15. Jazz Man says:

I saw too many good things from Kanter last year to throw it all out after one game. Yes the kid is still very raw. I think at times he tries too hard and gets confused/frustrated. The times when he is able to forget everything and just play his game he has shown a lot of potential. Keep in mind this is still early in the summer, not much has happened in Kanter’s development since the playoffs – some workouts maybe and a trip to Turkey.

  16. disco says:

@ Jake – I agree its summer league and these guys haven’t really done much since the end of the season. Pretty sure most good players start the season slowly to peak at the right end of the season. Have they even had training camp yet? @JMC -I completely agree with the young PG option. I’m a big advocate for getting rid of Watson and allow Tinsley to help tutor a young bloke

  17. Larry N. says:

Here are the official stats from the Jazz- Pistons game one in Orlandohttp://www.nba.com/summer-league/games/20120709/UTADET/gameinfo.html#nbaGIboxscore

  18. Larry N. says:

The stats did not register correctly, but they are now on this web site.

  19. What has Burks done to prove he is a beast and will be fine in this league? IMO he still has a lot to prove if we are sold on him being a part of our future core 4

  20. Wow you guys are dumb…

    1) It is summer league
    2) Do you see the people they are playing with?
    3) Team chemistry does not just come and you are not going to get chemistry in a summer league game with people that are not going to be on the roster.
    4) Burks and Kanter should be playing 30-35 mins a game in summer league. Detroit played 9 players we played 13. We should be giving the time to the people that are going to play on the roster. Not to people that are not even going to have a chance to come to training camp.
    5) Do you all not remember when Kanter handled Bynum quite well? I will take a 17 point effort against the 2nd best center in the league over a 3 point effort in the FREAKING SUMMER LEAGUE. When he starts doing this in a game that matters then you can say something.
    6) The same people that are saying this about Kanter are the same people saying OMG JEFFERSON SHOULD BE THE MVP!! LETS GIVE HIM A 10 YEAR DEAL WORTH 300 MILLION DOLLARS.

  21. Concerning Dallan’s points:

    1. Exactly. The third pick in the draft should look a bit more like the bully in the sandbox. Kanter looked like the little boy getting the sand kicked in his eyes.

    2. See above.

    3. Kanter should be more familar with the system, which should give him an advantage over new players on the roster.

4.Kanter played 28 minutes. I’m not sure 5 extra minutes would have made much of a difference to his boxscore.

    5. Kanter had one good game, which happened to be against the Lakers. He’s clearly an all-star in the making (yes…I am being sarcastic).

    6. Jefferson plays poorly on defense, but at least you know he’s going to contribute around 18-20 points, and 8-12 rebounds a night on a regular basis. It was clear how Coach Corbin used Kanter over the last third of the season, that he had about as much confidence in him as I do (which is somewhere between nothing and next to nothing).

  22. 7) We are STILL running a dang Iso offense which once again NO ONE on the whole team besides Al is good at. So why are we running it? It looks like our coach is as incompetent as I thought he was.

  23. I read an article in a local newspaper recently that Corbin said he plans on running the offense in a similar fashion, but that he plans on doing something different on the defensive end to help us play the pick and roll better.

If Kanter would be better suited to a pick and pop type offense (he supposedly has a good looking outside shot), he might do better on another team that is set up to utilize his skills better. So far Enes and the Jazz haven’t been a perfect fit.

  24. Mike Nguyen says:

Kanter still hasn’t improve much on his explosiveness. Takes too long to gather and when he does he doesn’t have the lift to get him over the rim. Frustrating watching him get blocked and watching his impatient plays.

We were doing fine the first half guys started to get impatient and tried too much playing I basketball instead of team.

  25. Logan says:

In my opinion the coach kind of threw the game. I’m not saying he tried to lose I am saying he didn’t care if they won and I think he kind of wanted them to lose. Burks only played 17 min Kanter got 27 but he only got 4 post up moves to prove himself burks did not have any plays designed for him except at the last of the quarter which is onfair to do to him and that is one of the reasons he shot a low percentage. I think the Jazz will do better and that game was just to prove that you really can lose a game.

  26. Mike – David Locke would echo your sentiments about Kanter. In my mind, he isn’t a guy that will do well down under the basket. I see him as more of a mid-range offensive kind of player.

  27. L.K.Anderson says:

Corbin is not coaching these games. He is sitting in the stands and the assistants are taking turns coaching.Give these kids some time and patience…

  28. Browncoat says:

What?!?! I am so done with Kanter and Burks, they suck and should be traded immediately. Can’t believe KOC still has a job…

    (End Sarcasm)

  29. @Jason if you feel like Kanter does not fit with our offensive style then neither does any of the other players on this entire team. The core four would all flourish in a pick and roll offense.

  30. Browncoat says:

@Dallan – Whatever man, Pick and Roll offense sucks. It got us no where. I prefer the basketball motion-less and in one man’s hands for entire offensive sets.

(Sorry, I really shouldn’t be sarcastic today)

  31. @Browncoat HAHAHA

  32. Omar says:

hahaha @Browncoat, you should mention the reports that whole 4 team 15+ player trade is dead because Marshon Brooks went 0/10 in a Summer League game today.

  33. Patrick says:

Karl Malone only averaged 14 pnts 8 rebs his first season starting in the NBA and he was 22. Kanter just turned 20, missed college ball, and last yrs summer league and pre season. Cut him some slack. He has plenty of time to mature.

  34. KCJones says:

Kanter and Burks played poorly in a summer league game?? Let’s ship them off! Cut them from the team! Quick, trade them!

Geez, summer league is for development, people. If they were awesome at everything, they wouldn’t be in summer league. This is their 2nd year and what we want to see is improvement, not perfection.
