The cold war is over… time to retool

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.We all watched our US armed forces retool and retrain to fight a new threat, time for the Jazz to realize that need too. Jazz brass should not be “building” a team to take down the Spurs and Lakers – those teams will be well on the decline by the time we reach our prime. We must BUILD a team that can compete with the Thunder and Clippers.
* We need a big PG that can defend and run the pick/roll.
* We need three skilled bigs (I’d love them all to be 6′10/11), that can run, defend, rebound and have among them some versatility on the offensive side. 7′0 space eaters need not apply.
* We need athletes on the wings that are not defined by a position but can flex between positions and that each has at least one NBA skill.
* We need a defense minded coach that will run transition offense with a pick and roll soul.
Can we make any headway toward tomorrow with some trades today? Dont know, Jazz have not been know to make major changes. But inaction is not going to cut it this time. Will we be able to attract free agents even with all the $ we might have after the season (history suggests no).
One big question, would fans we willing to part with Favors? Great on defense, but you wonder if he will ever develop an offensive game (yeah i know the coaching issue is an issue). We might be able to pluck Monroe from Detroit and they can pair Favors with Drummond for a defensive freak show. Here are some moves via the trade machine:
In:
Greg Monroe (C), Beno Udrih (PG), Jason Thompson (PF), Emeka Okafor (C), Mike Dunleavy (SF)
Out:
Favors, Jefferson, Millsap, Foye, Watson, Bell

While we are having fun looking ahead, this kid from OSU (Cowboys and Buckeyes) is a Jazztype PG for sure ! Watch his game, a lot like the good DWill (before wrist and tide).
Former McDonald’s All-American, Marcus Smart
asshole… why dont sell all hole team better?
Easy Guido… just talking here my friend. You know chat, marketplace of ideas… You want to just keep rolling with what we got on the floor? Well ok, good for you. But, no need to be rude. Your always welcome to drive to Ohio and we can settle it outside bro.
Only thing I agree with you is Marcus Smart. OKC owns Sacramentos first rounder this year. Do they really want More young talent? no. They want to win a ship now. So why not send them something for the pick. I don’t know what trade would be good for the Thunder, maybe add a third team. Marcus Smart is compared to James harden. I would even like Ben Mclemore.
Don’t the jazz have 2 first rounders in this upcoming draft? Let’s just say the jazz stand pat with this team for the rest of the year. Would Jeff wither from Kansas be a good pick with the GS pick? What about Seth curry with one of those picks? I like both of those players now and they will be available for the picks that the jazz will have. What do you all think?
Withey … Sorry
There are plenty of big men in this upcoming draft, guys I’d like to get Mason Plumlee, Patrick Young or the other big guy at Kentucky not name Nerlins, Willie Cauly-Stein.
I’d also alike to see us get Michael Carter-Williams from Syracuse with the first pick, he’s averaging something ridiculous like 9 ast/gm. I’ve watched him once, and is a pretty smart player, he’s very aware of where his guys are, and creates for others.
Toronto wants to keep Calderon, wonder about lowery, hes cheaper as well.
Detroit wants cousins. Wonder if they would give up monroe.
If so have a monroe, favors, kanter line up.
Not sure how we would make these trades, would obviously include 3 man for Monroe.
But a nice young line up that is cheap.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Derrick Favors, but i’ve see him blow so many dunks and layups that it is beyond concerning. Plus, he’s the best defensive big the Jazz have ever had since I’ve been watching.
The thing we have to remember is that the traditional role of the Center is DEFENSE. No championship team in the NBA in the last 50 years has had their leading scorer be a Center.
The lone exception to this is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who of course led the Bucks and the Lakers to multiple championships. Only other guy who’s come close is Shaquille Oneal.
My concern with Favors here is that he views himself to be a Power Forward, not a center. But he definitely plays like a center. And Enes Kanter is viewed as a Center, but plays more like a PF.
Power forwards have to be able to score. Paired with an elite point guard, Favors could easily average 15 points a game. But any more than that would honestly be very surprising for me. Favors has a LOT of difficulty finishing at the rim.
With Kanter and Favors on the floor, we would needs a high scoring small forward for additional offense and who could spread the floor. Along with some sharp shooting volume scoring guards.
So for me, it depends on how this team is put together in the future. If we expect Favors to carry the offensive load, we’re in trouble. But surround him with enoeugh good players and he’ll be a beast.
I also look at Blake Griffin. Without a good point guard to feed him, Blake Griffin would not even be considered a top tier power forward.Still, the one thing Griffin does do with consistency is finish at the rim.
For now, Derrick Favors is our best option. Defense wins championships.
