Ads on Jerseys

Posted by: KCJones on July 20th, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

In an effort to not be outdone by soccer in terms of shoving sponsors down our throats in the name of more money, the NBA has approved ads on jerseys. Not only will they be on the jerseys worn in-game, but they will also be on the jerseys you buy from Fanzz. yippee.

This idea of course, totally blows. I hate it. UNLESS, its a really cool brand that I like!

So, what company logo would you think would be awesome on a Jazz uni?

What logo would suck on it?

I’ll start:

Skullcandy:  cool!

Ex-Lax:  not cool.

Yeah, it was only a matter of time. The NBA is a business, and this is a smart move to bring in more revenue.

    Beats by Dre.: Cool
    Monistat Cream: Not cool

BTW: AK had reported that he’s either signing with the nets or staying in Russia. Don’t really care, but though it pertained to us a little.

As a long time soccer fan, I’ll tell you that the ads, at first, didn’t bother me. I remember in the 80s teams had one ad on the jersey, and that was it.
Nowadays, jerseys look like a F1 car, which bothers me a lot. There are ads that ruin the layout, adding colors that really shouldn’t be there. I have a jersey from a Brazilian team, from 2003, that is beautiful, but could’ve been even better if it wasn’t for an orange ad in the sleeve.
My point is: I don’t mind an ad, if it’s discreet. But the abundance of them can ruin a jersey.
Glad I bought my oversized Millsap jersey when I was over there :)

Mass consumerism and branding, I hate this idea. Is nothing sacred anymore?! You dont run business ads on church, you shouldnt run them on a Jazz jersey. Hate it hate it hate it.

So in other words we are paying a name brand our money so we can advertise for them for free whenever we were a Jazz jersey. Companies have to pay for ad space, then they should pay us to wear the jerseys or give them to us for free since we are walking buildboards!!!!

I pray its not alcohol company, cuz Im gonna have to pay a seamstress money to pull all that out. I hate you Stern.

  5. Omar says:

*correction: I F***N hate you Stern.

  6. Steven says:

I doubt the Jazz will risk the wrath of a large percentage of its audience by having an alcohol related logo on its jersey. For a few extra dollars it would risk losing a lot more in season ticket sales. There is a reason that the Jazz ask to play as few home games on a sunday as possible during the regular season and that is to cater to those fans who would be most upset with alcohol logo on the jersey.

This time last year I was all for adding one discreet sponsor to the NBA jersey but post lockout I’m not sure what its going to achieve. The owners need protection from themselves. There are a few teams like the Jazz that are trying to take their time to build the team the right way by using expiring contracts and using time to slowly put the right pieces together. Then there are other teams out there that are going gung ho and paying inflated prices for average players like the lockout never happened. Give those types of owners a few extra million $’s and what are they going to do with it? I’m sorry but maybe rather than a few million extra dollars maybe certain franchises would be better served with protection from certain types of management. If management can’t be trusted to run within a specified budget within a 3 to 5 year period the NBA needs a power to remove the management from the team and force that franchise to install new management. Maybe then we can think about adding more money from sponsors.

  8. Well if you put the Logo around the colors the team all ready has then it is not a problem. Like MLS. There Jerseys do not look bad at all.

  9. !@#$%, I guess i should hurry and buy a favors jersey before they put stupid advertisements on them

  10. Jake says:

Does anybody else beside me think that David Stern is an idiot?

  11. Jupit Crush says:

Not getting the churches connection ha.

Stern is actually a very good commissioner – probably the best in all professional sports. The blocking of the Chris Paul trade was super sketchy but the strides he’s made in making the NBA a global organization and combating racism are unparalleled. Every year he works to improve the game with things like instant replay and techs for whining at the refs a couple years ago (which I wish they’d bring back).

Good espn article from last year mentions a couple things he’s done here

    http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/7126679/bryant-gumbel-unfairly-labeled-nba-commissioner-david-stern

But ya, logos on jerseys totally outweigh his accomplishments and make him an idiot, you nailed it.

Ads on jerseys makes the NBA, a business, more profitable. You all do realize Adidas already has an ad on the top-right of your jersey right?

    To answer KC’s acutal question:

    Good logo: Monster energy
Bad logo: Land O’ Lakes butter

  12. John says:

Maybe the jazz can buy advertising rights on the lakers jerseys :p

    I’m thinkin’

    Larkin Funeral Home

    Jiffy Lube
    Bend over

    Toco Bell
    Run for the boarder

    Energy Solutions
    Your waste, our gain

I understand it from a buisness aspect but beyond that stern is an idot

  15. For us I would say Delta is a good one because there colors match ours.

If anyone watches Soccer it does not affect anything to have Xango across RSL Jerseys. It matches with there Jersey. As long as you find a sponsor for each team that is committed the. It will be fine. Like Starbucks and Celtics it works cause they are both Green.

  16. Kevin says:

    Cool: Gatorade Lightning Bolt

    Bad: Bengay

I find it funny the NBA voted on Ads before they came to a meeting to discuss the flopping pandemic. Money always before stability and competition for this league. Screw you Stern and Silver.

  17. first off you have to understand it’s the teams that want this not the NBA, David Stern isn’t the reason for this. A lot teams are losing money and having advertisements on the Jersey would bring a significant amount of money in that wont hurt anything but our eyes. So do I hate the idea of having Dunkin’ Donuts on my jersey, yes I do very much. is it going to stop me from buying jerseys and watching the basketball not at all.

One thing I would suggest is maybe setting up a Premium jersey (like authentic) that don’t have advertisements on them, that way the fan has a choice. or at least reduced pricing on Jerseys.

  18. French Dude says:

the favorite of Jerry Sloan, “John Deere”, and it’s a perfect match on the green jersey……….

  19. Dave801 says:

I read that the company logo wouldn’t sprawl across the jersey like in soccer… that it would be a patch on the breast like the Christmas day games. That wouldn’t be real bad.

But I won’t buy a jersey that has corporate logo on it. I’m nobody’s billboard.

  20. Jupit Crush says:

John Deere would be sick – Nothing runs like a deer.
