Meet
Two Moves
Posted by: S.F. on June 20th, 2011
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.So this is my second attempt at my first post. The first attempt didn’t go so smoothly as I saved my draft and all my content disappeared. I am not going to go into the depth I did, but my buddy and I came up with two possible moves we believe could make us contenders. Some of this will depend on luck (or Kahn pulling a Kahn and doing something stupid).
First, trade Memo and the 3rd pick for Bogut and the 10th pick. Bucks are rumored to be shopping Bogut to MN for the second pick. Darko would have to be included for salary reasons, as is Memo here. Obviously, the Bucks are infatuated with someone at the top of the draft (probably Williams). Thus, as long as Kahn doesn’t pull the trigger or pick the guy the Bucks want, we are in a perfect position to make a trade with the Bucks. This gives us an all-star center that would fit into the Jazz offense better than Jefferson and in my opinion plays way better D. He is one of the few legitimate centers in the league. The Bucks would get whoever they are after and an expiring contract they can keep or trade for other pieces.
Second, trade Jefferson for Iggi and a future pick or something. This fills our SG need and gives us a lock-down defender. Right now the best offer the Sixers have for Iggi is Kaman and they would likely jump at this opportunity.
Third, take Jimmer and Bismack or big Montejuas (sp?) as a back up for Bogut with the 10 and 12. I am not a Jimmer fan, nor am I a hater, but he could be a great addition to our second unit. The guy can flat out score and give us a much needed boost with our second unit. Also, it would be nice to have another shooter at the end of games. If we trade Okur and Jefferson we need another big hence the other pick. Plus, Bogut can help bring the newbie along.
Why? We can only build around so many young stars. KOC has made it clear that he plans on building around Hayward and Favors. Making this moves fills some much needed gaps, let’s the Jazz play their offense (not the modified version we run for Jefferson), gives us a solid core of young players combined with some great vets, and gives us depth.
Starters: Harris, Iggi, Hayward (could put Iggi or Hayward at either position, I don’t care), Favors, Bogut.
Second Unit: Jimmer, Bell, Miles, Millsap, and the other big we take in the draft. You also have Evans and if he has been improving this summer maybe you put him in as the 3. Also if we resign AK or someone else in free agency they would be added in.
I know this is probably wishful thinking but if the cards fall just right, it is actually possible.

Quick addition, just read that Jonas V. can’t be bought out this year. It will be another year til he can come over. Apparently his stock is expected to fall, Rockets will likely pick him up with the 14th at the latest. Maybe we take him with our 12th pick and resign Fes for a year, as he is superior to the other bigs that could be available at 10 or 12.
Love it. The only snag is getting bucks to pull on that deal. However, the expiring contract of memo is nice, plus the chance of getting possibly kanter at 3. Now that Jonas isn’t playing in the nba this season, Kanter’s value will go through the roof and hence, so will the 3rd pick. Because of this, it may be possible to swing the deal with the bucks. Jefferson for Iggi should be an easy one like you’ve said.
We get young talent still and savvy vets. Love it.
If the Jazz could pull all of this off, I would love it!
I love the trade, I love Bogut and I love how much more of the Jazz I would see in Australia if they got him
Iggy is overhyped and overpaid, and I think he would hurt us more than help us by crippling us financially. I don’t feel that he’s the kind of player that makes those around him much better and don’t know why everyone around here is so high on him. Also, Montiejunas is Fesenko with an outside game. Could be talented but poor work ethic. He is 7′ but was one of the worst rebounders and shot blockers of all the Euroleague’s big men last year. And Biyombo is too much of a risk and offensive liability for a team with such specific needs to be filled as we have right now. I would love to see us add Bogut, though. We really could use a good defensive center and multidimensional player like Bogut right now.
I got it, I got it. Trade Okur, Miles, and Bell away to the bobcats for their two first round picks 9th and 19th. Fill some of their needs, clear out the junk.
I’m all for trading memo (I’ve been saying for over a year that he’s done – that kind of injury is hard core.)
Is Bogut just injury ridden? If we had some better assurance of a healthy Bogut that would be interesting, but I think the sun is setting on him too. With the 3rd pick, if we were going to go big, we could pick up a Kanter… and at least he doesn’t have a history of injury.
Justin, Actually Kanter did have concerns with his knees. Its been all cleared up by the docs, but big guys do have knee issues. Maybe a hole yr off, let his body catch up to him and that wont ever be an issue again, or maybe a yr off has screened the knee things so we cannot see it for what it is. Guess meaybe we shall see in time.
I have never been sold on Bogut. He is good but the last few years he has been well not so good. And i dont know about iggy either. With the new CBA I would much rather get rid of some of our big contracts and go young instead of adding more. It might put us in a better position and who knows, we could nab an all star when each team has to stay under the hard cap and they have to get rid of some players. Or maybe we will get lucky and draft our all star.
I think we trade memo for future picks. His expiring deal will give some needed cap space for the teams that want a crack at the big FA in 2012.
You people need to do your homework. Memo is hurt and unless his contract can be covered by insurance there will be no value until Feb deadline. Bogut is injury prone (AK2) and Iggy contract would put the Jazz right back into the AK contract. A GM would laugh his head off at these proposals.
LK, at the moment there is no Feb Deadline.. With the lockout looming, talks of a hard cap, and an unknown deadline or time frame for next season, many GM’s just may do what they usually hold off on, prior to the end of this month. Next, if you read, Okur is claiming to be completely healthy. He has been reported as to checking into his contract for a possibility of playing for Turkey in the event of a lockout. KOC has till the end of the month to move him if he wants, and it seems it could happen. In a normal yr, I would agree with your assesment, but this year takes out some stops.
I am not big on Bogut either, would rather stay with Al. To move Al, I think you have to land Marc Gasol. That wont be an easy task. In any case, you have to replace Millsap, Harris, or Al with a better player to move them. Al is the tougher of the 3 to do that with.
@ LK, You’re confused. Since when does health have anything do to with expiring contracts? Please don’t post on a forum until you’ve thought through what you’re actually saying, because you haven’t. It’s not “memo” the bucks would necessarily be after, it’s his contract. I won’t waste my time giving you the numerous examples of players being traded not for their capability to play, but just for their expiring contracts. Insurance has nothing to do with it. His value is lowered IF he is still inujured, but an expiring contract will always have value.
Since when has bogut been “injury prone” man you need to rethink this. Bogut is not injury prone, he had ONE bad injury to his elbow last season. That does not make him “injury prone” the question is whether he’s fully of capable of being fully recovered. All signs point to yes. If he isn’t there, he’s close to it. AK is a guy who’s injury prone, that’s not bogut. You’re obviously confused.
Lastly, Iggi would be a great addition to the team. He’s the best defensive player at his position, an amazing passer, and a perfect slasher, which would do wonders in the flex offense system the jazz run. Guess what LK? You have to pay money to really good players. You just have a complex from the Jazz’s unfortunate signing of Ak. There are other players out there who get paid a lot, but deserve it. By the way, Iggi’s contract is 5 mil+ lower than AK’s was per year, so the comparison is also bad for that reason. We pay Jefferson more than Iggi is making – two of the better players at their positions, should we kick jefferson out because he’s making close to what ak was making? lol. Good players usually get paid good dollars. Iggi’s contract is only a year more than jefferson’s at less than what we pay jefferson, so calm down.
LK, look in the mirror and laugh. You’re the only one doing it. Well, you and your fantasy gm’s you know so much about.
If a team can prove a player is not capable of coming back from an injury insurance will pay part of the buyout. And yes Bogut is injury prone. Check the last couple of years to see what he has gone through. That is why the rumor started to trade him because the Bucks are afraid he will still keep going down. This is also why probably no one will trade for him. Iggy contract is a main concern for most teams. Those that have plenty of money don”t care anyway. If any of these players are in a Jazz uniform next year I will stand corrected but don’t count on the Jazz brass standing in line to do it. Expiring contracts don’t become valuable until the Feb trade deadline if there is one. A lockout changes dates on everything.
L.K. I am not sure if you understood my post or not. I am not saying this is a done deal, the chances are slim but the trade is possible. The Bucks would not being doing the trade because they want Memo. The Bucks would be doing the trade for the 3rd pick. But in order to get what you want you have to give. Also, you can say expiring contracts don’t have value until February, but that is not true. Normally, teams just don’t make trades for expiring contracts until February. The value is the same year round. Come February whether the Jazz have Memo on their roster or someone else does, another team will want that contract to get salary off its books.
Yes, Bogut has had some injuries as of late, but most Centers get injured from time to time. I beleive our starting Center now had a massive knee injury the year before we got him. He had not been back yet and look what he did this year. As another example look at Tyson Chandler, when he played for the Hornets he had all sorts of injuries. Hornets traded him for Okafor, a guy that never gets injured. This year Okafor missed like 4 or 5 weeks while Chandler was mostly healthy.
Also, the other rumored reason for the Bucks shopping Bogut is that he is unhappy playing for the Bucks and the team and Bogut have started to clash. Although, I did not do any research on whether Bogut would like to come and play for Utah, I think he would be happy playing here, especially given our club’s history of success and his connection with Utah. (He may not though; I don’t know).
No I would not trade Jefferson for Iggy in a normal situation, but if you get Bogut first (he would fit in with the Jazz’s system, but if they change systems maybe this is not the way to go) we could get Iggy and a pick from the Sixers helping us in another area. If you have any better ideas of a team that is looking for a big and has players on the block we could trade Jefferson for, I would love to hear about it.
This year is a weird year and anything could happen. I know that Bogut and Iggy are expensive, but we are shedding similar contracts (yes, I know Memo’s was expiring). This keeps us with various levels of contracts. If we just sign a bunch on new guys with rookie contracts that is great, but what happens when they all want to get paid at the same time? Who knows what will happen under the new CBA (I don’t) but under the current CBA we can stay out of the lottery tax and be contenders without a long rebuild.
Finally, I read your comments often. You have obviously been watching the Jazz for a long time and have a feel for the organization. However, you never really have anything to say that would possibly help the team. You usually just tell people why their ideas won’t work. I realize this is not likely to happen, in fact, I believe I said that in the post but if you have any better ideas please enlighten us. Don’t just jump on here say that I need to do my research, unless you called KOC and told him the idea and he lauged at you, you have zero basis to say GM’s are going to laugh. They may laugh, who knows but if you told me at the beginning of last year Sloan would retire midseason and the Jazz would then trade Deron Williams I would have laughed too.
One last thing:
In the end, this whole post may be irrelevant because the Bucks said they are not shopping Bogut and are not interested in trading him. If the Bucks aren’t pursuing a certain draft pick, this whole idea is a moot point and it doesn’t matter what the T-Wolves do.
This is the first trade article I actually agree with. GREAT POST! THANK YOU!
I am sorry if I seemed a little rough around the edges. But reading several posts does that. We have been doing what I call truth and tale. I don’t think there has been one player that has been both praised and bad mouthed. You read one post and it looks like they have picked ROY for next year and another that looks like Sam Bowie2.. Last November I told people that the Jazz were going to trade at the deadline for Favors and Harris. But it was AK that was the trade piece. As most of us would admit that trade came out of left field. (By the way left field is a term used in baseball, another sport using a ball.)It will be interesting to see what will really happen thurs night. I will go with Kanter and Harris with a surprise second pick.(Yes I know the Jazz do not have one thatis why it will be a surprise..) Second choice Williams,Jimmer.
LK, what if we could get Kanter, Knight, Jimmer, and Harris? Here is an out of bounds double trade…. LOL Could be a clip, thats a football term meaning hit from behind…. LOL. Anyhow. Trade Millsap, Miles, and Bell to Cavs for Sessions and the 4th pick. Send Sessions and Harris to Sacramento for Evans and the 7th pick. Thats gives us the 3rd, 4th, 7th, and 12th picks. Then Draft Kanter, Knight, Fredette, and Harris.. Then you could bring in maybe Stockton and Carter… Could bring Fes back as a cheap Bench warmer type person.. Lineup;
Knight/Fredette/Stockton
T Evans/Hayward/Knight
Hayward/Harris/J Evans/Carter
Favors/Kanter/Okur
Al/Kanter/Okur
What do ya think, a clip, or illeagal proceedure?
I actually like Al better than Bogut when playing next to Favors. If Millsap were to remain the starter at PF then I would like Bogut better than Al for the Jazz. Al will be an All Star this year, and what he lacks in help side D I think Favors will be able to make up for. Favors isn’t much of an offensive threat so him and Al will be a good fit. Favors can finish around the rim if his man tries to leave him to double Al. So I say keep Al.
I love the Iggy idea however so let’s just make the Memo and 3rd pick trade directly for Iggy and the 16th pick if we can. Iggy isn’t over-priced, he’s priced fairly given that he’s one of the top SF’s in the league. He’s a 27 year old (still has plenty in the tank) who scored 14 ppg and grabbed 6 rebounds a game and dished 6 assists a game while also being one of the top on ball defenders in the league and taking 1.5 steals per game. If a top notch defender who scores, rebounds and assists doesn’t make his teammates better I don’t know who does.
The starting lineup of Harris/Hayward/Iggy/Favors/Al is suddenly a very long and athletic lineup that has 3 very solid veterans. We would also keep our continuity better than if we were to trade Al.
@Patrick: Sounds like either a safety or backfield in motion to me. What is scarry is these things could happen. I think you will see trades and what not more in this draft than in any other. I see where Hoopsworld has Williams and Jimmer going to the Jazz. They have Burks going fifteenth and Walker right around there. Wolves would select Kanter to drop Williams to third.
