Wrong Mentality

Posted by: Jazzville on October 21st, 2010

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

I read a really good blog post by one fan on here that was talking about the wrong mindset.  He was saying that he was sick of the Lakers being automatically put on that platform above us, and everyone else in the West.  I totally agree. It was funny to see one fan however, that criticized his blog post. (I guess the author had in another blog mentioned being realistic). This fan (Duece I think) criticized his logic saying that realistically the Jazz did not have a shot at winning the west.  It was disappointing to see that from a fan.  I sure hope the players don’t have any of that same attitude. If they feel like they are shooting for 2nd in the West then like the blog author said, they are automatically saying that it is not possible to beat out the Lakers. I would say that we have the talent and the depth this year to contest for that top seed. I realistically think we can win the West. Duece does not seem to think so, but that is what has been wrong with our whole Jazz Nation the last couple of years. Fans, and Players alike seem to have this thought that we can beat anyone in the West, except the Lakers. That has to stop if we are ever going to overcome them and move past them in the playoffs. What do you guys think? Do you think I am being overly optimistic or do you think that realistically, we have a shot at winning the West?

There are 2 types of fans. One loves their team and shouts “This year we have the best team ever! This is our year!”
and the second has the same amount of love for their team but a deep love for the game and the analytics of it. They take stats and other things into account.
Both kinds of fans are equally loyal and neither type of fan should be judged or judge each other.

@Colby-couldn’t disagree with you more. There are 2 types of fans? That is it? So according to you, is the first fan ignorant to statistics and the analytics of the game?

Winning is a mindset. You think there are any T-Wolves fans out there thinking this is their year? Doubt it. The Jazz are capable. While I think it would be tough to win the West, I think we can do it. You think the Jazz go into LA and think, statistically they are better, analytically they are better, so we probably won’t win. I sure hope not, and that is what he is saying above.

I think the author is trying to say that he thinks the team is good enough that those fans that take stats and other things into account should find the Jazz good enough to compete, and maybe even win the West this year.

    Very good points.

Me personally, i remember last year being excited to play the Lakers during the season just to see who would win. And i admit that i did not want to play them second round in the play-offs and was extremely pissed when all we had to do to avoid that was win 1 other game.(which was within our reach)

But this year we absolutely need to have the “i don’t care who we play because we know we can beat them” attitude! especially against the Lakers!

We definitely have the skill and our size has gotten better. I know we can beat the lakers in any given situation… it’s just a matter of the players showing up to play.

Every year I hope the team wins the West, and will admit, that often times I look for reasons why I think we can, even though it doesn’t seem likely, but isnt that what makes being a Jazz fan so awesome? That every year we are capable of suprising people. If so called statistically driven fans don’t think this team can win the West (with a little luck with health) then they are the ones being unrealistic, because we can. What kind of fan has this type of team and still thinks we have no shot at beating the Lakers?…..a Lakers fan. Surely no true Jazz fan would think that way

    I agree with Colby.

There are fans driven by logic and fans driven by emotion. The Jazz to me are somewhere in between. We are good enough to win it all so i support them logically and emotionally. I also know its still an uphill battle. Even with our improvements, the players have to mesh, learn the offense, etc… Seems like everythings coming along ok though so maybe we are better than I expected.

As much as I want the Jazz to beat the lakers, i’ll admit that I hope we don’t play them until WCF that way if they can get knocked off sooner good… Thats knowing they are probably our biggest threat, so logically I don’t want to play them if I do than last. Emotionally I want to destroy them to prove how awesome we are. Long as we win I don’t care how it works out.

It’s like the father who goes to his kids games and they lose every week. Emotionally his kids team is the best, logically not so much.

Thats not just sports, thats life. Hell im going through marital problems right now. One of my biggest problems is I address everything logically, my wife emotionally. That doesnt mean either one of us are wrong. We just see the world in a different hue of colors.

McJazzy, there might not be any Twolve fans thinking its their year, but i know plenty of Mavs, Magic, Cav, etc fans that think its their year.

Hell I think its the Chicago Bears year every year., ppl look at me like im crazy. Until they got to the superbowl when they werent supposed to. started out this year 4-1. ITS THEIR YEAR!!

  6. Jazzville says:

I just used the Twolves as an example of being realistic. Mavs fans and Magic fans can think that as well because guess what? They have a chance as well. Just like Clippers fans think this could be a year they make the playoffs. They could. They dont think they are going anywhere once they get there, but to them making the playoffs is an attainable goal. Honestly, we can win the west. I am more scared of actually beating the Lakers and going oh shoot, we now have to play the Heat. All I am saying is the players (and it helps to have the fans behind them) have to believe they can win the west or they wont. If they set a goal to finish 2nd, then how are they are going to be ok with that, and winning the west becomes that much harder. if they set the goal to win the West and take the 1st seed, then your mentality changes and you play differently.

Just answer this one question? Do you honestly think we can win the west this year? If you think so then great, that is what we are talking about, and if you honestly think we have NO shot at winning the west then I say you are a poor fan given the amount of talent and potential we have this year.

  7. rehs says:

    here is the real question?

If the Jazz stay healthy do you think that they can win the Championship? Not just the West…can the Jazz actually beat the Heat in a 7 game series if we made it there?

    PG-Dwill vs Chalmers adv. Jazz
    SG-Bell vs Wade adv. Heat
    SF-Kirilenko vs James adv. Heat
    PF-Jefferson vs Bosh adv. 50/50
    C-Memo vs Haslem/Anthony adv. Jazz
    Bench adv. Jazz

I actually feel much better about that once I wrote it out on here than I did before. Bell and AK match up as good as anyone on those guys.

  8. Garbear says:

Man that would suck. Finally beating the Lakers and feeling so relieved that we finally got past them, then having to face James and Wade in a 7 game series. Of course I think we can, but I like our chances against the Lakers a little better, which is funny cause I think the Lakers would beat the Heat in a 7 game series. How does that work?

  9. @ Matt/Colby

Do you think that the Jazz have a shot at winning the West? I mean a legitimate shot? Based on logic or emotion, or statistics or whatever it is you base your judgment on.

  10. Chad says:

Who the hell says it has to be the heat in the finals…

  11. A.G. says:

    TOTALLY agree with Chad!

Isn’t everybody kind of doing the same thing with the Heat as we’ve all been doing with the Lakers? Automatically assuming ANY team is going to be here or there is foolish. There are way too many variables that can affect how a team plays, it’s not all just based on raw talent.

  12. Matt says:

I think the team that we have has a shot, my biggest worry this season is how little they have played together.

Al seems to be doing good, Bell at least knows what to expect since he was here before so that really helps, Gordon is a rookie so he might not be a huge factor this season, and watson/elson still have to learn the system and mesh.

I do think we have the talant for sure and i like how we are 7-0 preseason, but preseason isnt what i would use as a measuring stick for the season. It does however provide a huge confidence boost not only to me as a fan, but hopefully to the players themselfs.

So Sean, HELL YES they have a shot, logically and emotionally!

  13. Ok then, that is what I said in my last post, and what I think this guy is sayin in his. That if we have a shot, then we have to shoot for it. We can’t just assume the Lakers have it won like everyone else does….

  14. A~M says:

We always have a shot. We’re the freaking Jazz! Anything can happen, haven’t we all watched enough sports to realize that already??
