Game 11: Jazz 83, Wizards 76

Posted by: TACOREV on November 18th, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

After a putrid start (trailing 15-2 half way into the first quarter), the Jazz turn the tables and rally to defeat the winless Wizards.

Jefferson had a big second half, finishing with 21 & 13 to lead the Jazz. Only two other Jazzmen scored double figures: Hayward came off the bench for 15, while Mo added 12.

Yes, the lineup was shuffled coming into this game. Corbin started the three bigs (Millsap, Favors, and Jefferson) along with Mo and Foye. Marvin and Hayward were relegated to coming off the bench.

That new starting lineup stunk it up early, but improved over the course of the night.

Thoughts on the lineup? Do you think Corbin should keep it up, or go back to how it was before? Maybe make further alterations?

The Wiz only had two players in double figures, led by Jordan Crawford’s 20 & 8. Trevor Ariza put in 16 & 9.

The Jazz go 2-2 on the four game road trip, which we can’t feel too sheepish about with the way this team started the season on the road. But it needs to make significant improvements, and fast.

5-6 on the season, now headed back home to host the Rockets on Monday.

Jazz player of the game: Al Jefferson

    Waouh, creepy game, a win at 37.8 FG% and 22.2 3PT%, it’s not usual……..
Thoughts on the lineup, the big lineup doesn’t work, when you have 3 natural PF on the court, all playing on the same spot, all walking on each others feet, it can’t work, i didn’t even notice which one of them was suppose to play on the wing, it was just too much traffic under the basket, with very low FG% because it’s not easy to play in a sardines box, and with Mo and Foye, it can’t work too, Mo and Foye are more up tempo players, they seems bored on the court, Foye just wait for his 3, Mo drive, give the ball inside, and then, seem to don’t know what else to do……..
the offense is still undefined, defense is still not collective, thanks to the Wiz, you must lose when you score only 83
by the way the comeback on the end of the 1st quarter was with a small ball and running team, with only Marvin and Enes as bigs, we have so many young and atletic players,in Mo Gordon Alec Demarre Derrick Enes even Marvin and Paul are more on the running style, with these guys we have to stifle and exhaust the opposite team……. so again, coaching problem, or maybe more wrong style of play in regards to the roster

I think Foye should be used as a spot up shooter. Never as a starter. With Watson now in the mix what will happen?? Tinsley gets assists but looses in the turnover and can’t shoot. Teams just leave him alone so it is a four on five situation for their offense. Burks needs to play.. PERIOD…He would at least keep the defense on their toes..
I think the big lineup that was the starters tonight should only be used at the end of the game.As much as I like AL maybe it is time to move him. Heyward needs more of a offensive chance..Can’t do that with the same old offense..

One week ago, the Jazz would have crushed this pick-up Washington team. But on back-to-back games and previous tied situations, this game was crappy by construction.

If we except the Denver game, the jazz has been competitive on the road, even if at the end of the day, there’s only 2 wins out of 7 road games, including a 3OT win. Despite all our talks on the team’s weaknesses, I think it is still positive news.

@LK agreed, Jazz NEED Burks to play.

Foye is a streak shooter and pretty one dimensional. Okafor burned Al like 4 times down the court but was only able to convert once, Al just flat out was jogging down the court while his guy ran to the basket but couldn’t handle the bad pass. This bad start against the worst team in the league with ZERO stars proves that the usual bad starts are NOT Hayward and Marvin’s fault….but someone else who is always in the starting line-up that doesnt play any D…..I wonder who that is….

  5. 2 things that stuck out to me…

-Corbin is aware that Hayward and Marvin’s (or the SF spot) in the offense is broken. The big 3 I guess was his answer. Seeing Hayward away from the Al and Millsap blackhole and getting lots of touches was awesome to see what he can do when he gets full control. Or maybe he was just pissed off for not starting.

-Athleticism and hustle brought us back in the game. Demare, Favors, Hayward … guys that are actual athletes and play team ball. Its a professional sport. Why is Burkes riding so much PINE???? We are a mediocre team barely beating bad teams. Players that wont be here are going 1-10 and STILL on the court. Its time for Lindsey and KOC to make some business decisions.

  6. 1) It is pretty sad that we have to put one of our best players in Hayward on the bench so that he can be better. That makes no sense. Your best players should be in the starting lineup and compliment each other.

    2) No matter who you put in the starting lineup on the wings as long as Al and Paul are in there we have a problem. There is no coincidence that whoever we put in there whether they are doing good on the bench or not they just disappear. Hayward played great in the 1st half then gets put back with AL and Paul and disappears. THIS IS THE PROBLEM!!! We can keep make all the other changes around them but unless we trade one or put one on the bench nothing is going to change.

    3) If your “leader” plays with no energy then the rest of your team is going to play with no energy. There is not a coincidence when Al is off the court we make runs. You can say he had a great 3rd quarter all you want but when he left the game we were still within two. Nothing changed with his Iso ball cause there was NO DEFENSE! As soon as he left we extended the lead. We saw this in the Philly game as well.

4)I would assume the rumors of Burks leaving are pretty accurate. He has not played and even when he did we were putting him in bad positions to succeed. We have expected him and Hayward to be spot up shooters and that is not what they are.

    5) Unfortunately I think this problem comes down to three things that I have been harping on for the whole off season. Coaching is just not good. FO has put together a team that does not gel together at all. And Al is who he is and as much as people want him to change he will not.

    6) Hayward basically insinuated there was problems in the locker room after the game. This is probably why the team has been so out of sorts these last few games. Why do we keep having issues in the locker room???

  7. Ray says:

Not sure one can tell much about the Big 3 lineup in this game. It was a sloppy game and it looked like the Jazz played down to the level of the opponent. Plus, it was a back-to-back, last game on the road before heading home.

So, let’s see if the Jazz will try that lineup in the next game and see then if it’s workable.
