Game 16: Jazz 96, Hornets 84

Posted by: TACOREV on November 28th, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

The Jazz get their third road win of the season after beating the Hornets in front of the New Orleans crowd (if you want to call it a “crowd”).

Jefferson finished with 19 & 7, and both Millsap and Marvin each scored 16 on just seven field goal attempts, as the Jazz led comfortably for pretty much the entire second half, coasting to a 12-point victory.

Millsap also had eight boards and four assists. He and Hayward both shook off slumps tonight, as Gordon scored 15. Favors was great off the bench, finishing with 9 & 8, but played just 17 minutes. Neither Tinsley nor Watson scored a single point (going a 0-1 between the two of them), but they combined for 13 assists and four steals.

Grievis Vasquez and Robin Lopez each scored 18 to lead New Orleans, with Vasquez dishing out eight dimes and Lopez grabbing seven rebounds. Ryan Anderson, the stretch four who has killed the Jazz from beyond the arc in recent contests, posted just 7 & 8 on the night, hitting only 1-of-6 from 3-point range.

Marvin Williams lost his footing on one play, causing him to fall and hit his head. Initial word said he may have a concussion, meaning he could miss some time.

The Jazz improve to 3-7 on the road and 9-7 overall, with two more games remaining on this 3-game road trip. They will head to Oklahoma City on Friday and then Houston the following night.

  1. Way to keep the momentum going Jazz! THis was a big road win to get the trip started. I think this game comes down to shots behind the arc. We were over 50% . NOLA was 30% I would still take Ryan Anderson in a heartbeat. Perfect fit for the jazz.

  2. Millslapped says:

Funny how their two best players were the ones Al Jefferson and Tinsley were guarding… Anyway I hope Marvin is okay, and I’m glad to see Millsap get out of his slump. Oh and even though Derrick favors outplayed everyone on the floor he still only got 16 minutes?? Are we just asking this kid to leave in free agency or what?

  3. Omar says:

    Exactly Millslapped.

    Tinsley: 31 minutes
    Foye: 25 minutes
    Watson: 17 minutes

    For a grand total of………..9 points?! 3/9 shooting (33%)

    So 73 minutes for 9 points; 13 assists, 3 rebounds; 5 turnovers.

It wont matter against bad teams, but playoff caliber teams is another story.

    Play fn Burks!!!! You jerk!

  4. actually stat was 54% 3pt for jazz and 23% for NOLA. They shot 21 3’s and made 5. ouch.

  5. were up 16 points and Kanter and Favors are logging 15 min. of PT and a DNP for Burks. W…T….F ?

  6. Omar says:

The score was Jazz 19/ NO 20 when Al left game 14 seconds left in 4th.

When Al entered for Kanter at 5:58 in the 2nd the score was Jazz 29/ NO 20!!!

Favors and Kanter gave up ZERO points in about 6 minutes!! You are welcome Corbin.

  7. TACOREV says:

Good point Omar. The second unit allowed zero points for the first 6:51 of the second quarter. Then the first unit came back in and was outscored 19-12 over the final 5:09 of the quarter.

  8. Omar says:

@Tacorev, the bad part was that Watson was running the offense–and he has NO offensive game. And Carroll played great D but he really has no offensive creativity, that 11 point lead 2nd unit got could have been more with a Hayward and Burks backcourt.

    Al just trades baskets…..
Kanter and Favors get stops!! Corbin should have let them finish the 2nd quarter, but Corbin has predetermined substitutions. I dont get it?!

Playoff basketball thinking you are going to trade baskets with good Ds, its not gonna happen. You need to control the paint Al lets Robin Lopez get off.

Friday is gonna be a great test to see just who are the players that can win a championship and who needs to be traded, benched, or DNPed.

  9. Millslapped says:

@Omar: Exactly! People rave about Al Jefferson “offensive skills” when in reality he gives up more or just as much points as he scores. Sure Favors and Kanter aren’t as elite offensivley as Jefferson, but it doesn’t matter because they don’t give up more points than they score. At least we know we got two young studs for the future :)

  10. disco says:

@Millslapped. Thats if they stay after getting shafted by a crap coach for so long

  11. L.K.Anderson says:

@Omar: You forgot something in your first comment. What did the Hornets score against these three players?? Add that in and you have a way out of balance for them playing..
Burks must be in the doghouse..Or Corbin is extra stupid.
Jazz will be beat by double figures against the Thunder..
With both Mo and Marvin out maybe Burks can get in. No wait Corbin is the coach so it means extra time for Tinsley..
Please explain to me why Burks and Evans can do any worse than Watson/Tinsley/Foye??
When Burks and Evans play (according to my memory) they b ring fast exitement. Defense from the other team has to be on their toes not to quickly miss something.
Jazz will now go on a harsh losing streak..

  12. Omar says:

Hahaha @LK your absolutely right! The play that had me shaking my head was when Mason, ya freakn Mason, juked Foye–Foye nearly falls (looking at floor like it moved?! Haha), Mason goes from 3 point land to layup with no Jazz player stopping him?!

Corbin is a blockhead. I wouldnt be surprised if Bell gets in the game before Burks?! Why?? I have no fn idea!! Corbin must have sensitive ego: Burks probably still called him “Ty” and his feeling got hurt??

Ya Evans might not have the perfect stroke, but I never see him take a bad shot, its either wide open ir hes close to the basket—or a high percentage DUNK!! Id say Evans has a wwaayy better O game than Watson. And defensively, no question hes SUPERIOR to Foye, Watson, Tinsley. And ya hes a front court player but if Hayward, took those minutes and Carroll even at the 2, why not play Evans at the 3???

Ppl talk about Burks not shooting well this season, what a joke, Burks is getting no minutes, and taking like 1 or 2 shots a game; try sitting on the bench for over 2 hours then jump in to nba game (no warming up) and make the 1 or 2 shots taken? Ppl just look at at the season average and say Burks cant shoot. Whereas Foye has had games of ZERO % (0-7); 20%; 29; 25;…yet hes billed as a great shooter and is averaging like 27 minutes per game?? He over shot a 3ft last night by air balling it?! He has no game outside of shooting 3s. Period.

@Disco, ya I wouldn’t be surprise if they leave, nor would I begrudge them. I have a feeling Jazz plan on resigning both Millsap AND Al! Jazz FO is probably trying to be slick and say to Favors and Hayward’s agent: “why should they get big contacts they are bench players.” To which their agents will probably laugh their heads off. Jazz then will be stuck with Al and Tibs will personally pickup Favors and take him to Chicago where hell be a legend and champion. Smart move.

Westbrook vs. Tinsley (and Al Millsap interior D combo)…

    39 points (doesnt play 4th quarter); 12 assists; 8 rebounds; 5 steals; 1 turnover.

  13. KCJones says:

I’m glad we got a win. It would have been pitiful and embarrassing to lose to the Hornets twice when they were without Davis and Eric Gordon.

This game did nothing to allay my concerns about our team.

Al has picked up his game offensively (finally), but his D is still atrocious.

Millsap seems to have lost a step this year. He was an energy player, and he relied on that to perform well. But he’s always seemed to run out of gas whenever he gets starter-level minutes, and that really affects his game since he’s undersized.

Favors needs court time period. D-Locke the other day pointed out his ONE defensive lapse during our last home game, but doesn’t mention the 12 dunks that Al watched from under the hoop.

Kanter is ready for more minutes than 10-14. He’s not going to get it, though, with Al and Millsap on our team.

Hayward has been struggling lately, but had a nice end to the Hornets game where he hit some shots. I still believe he’d make a better backup PG than who we have now, with Burks playing the off-guard position (and switching with Hayward on D, guarding the other team’s PG). Corbin hates Burks tho.

Tinsley and Watson, while they have some skills and attributes I really like. Tinsley’s passing, Earl’s toughness….are they really bringing more to the team than we could get giving Burks development time on the 2nd unit and having Hayward run the offense?

I’d like to see Evans once in a while, especially when we’re up 10+ with 2 minutes left.

  14. As of right now, Randy Foye is a better player then Alec Burks.

As of right now, DeMarre Carroll is a better player then Jeremy Evans.

As of right now, Jefferson and Millsap are still more productive overall then Favors or Kanter.

I’m tired of fans playing the fear card that if such and such a guy doesn’t get his playing time now, then when the time comes, they will bolt for another team. We made Deron Williams the face of our franchise, and he still didn’t want to be here. Had we not traded him, he would have left anyway (and we wouldn’t currently have Marvin, Favors, and Kanter on the roster).

Corbin knows more about his players and his team then any of us fans. Somehow, despite a very heavy road schedule to open the season, he still has us sitting two game over .500. We finished last season six games above .500.
And another thing…please stop overrating the skills of our younger players. Favors, Hayward, and Kanter have zero consistency on the offensive end.

  15. Also, Al Jefferson has been tremendous the last two games. When he takes the ball strong to the basket, gets to the line, rebounds, shows some toughness, and even plays a little defense, he’s a near all-star caliber big guy.

  16. Counting the strike shortened season last year, and the first 16 games this season, Corbin’s record in the last 82 games (not counting the playoffs) is 45-37. For a team without a superstar, that’s really not bad at all.

  17. Guido says:

    1) Great big guys game.
    2) After 5 games I see a better Haywards quarter…
    3) Not a big game… sorry NO
    4) Player of the game: Williams after his injuty.

  18. Not a lot to take away from this game. Jazz beat a team that they should beat.

Jefferson’s offense has finally picked up these last 2 games. Good to see him playing with some agression.

Marvin Williams will most likely miss the OKC game because of a concussion.

Earl Watson is pretty bad. Couple of nice steals, but that’s it.

Why Randy Foye remains in the starting lineup is inconcievable to anyone except Ty Corbin and David Locke.

  19. Guido says:

    @Nick:
    1) Ok with Jafferson’s idea…
    2) well… Marvin´s out..
    3) Watson is worst than u said
    4) Randy Foye’s still on starting lineup because Gordon hayward’s butt can´t play 2 consistant quarters…

  20. disco says:

@Jason – I can see part of your point about scoring inconsistencies with the young guys, but production is more than just putting points up. I think Al is really trying but Millsap looks like Williams did during the season he was traded. I think a Favors/Al frontcourt would do the trick on a nightly basis where Al could take the load from Favors inconsistent offence and Favors takes the extra part of Al’s D. It would be a match up nightmare for a lot of teams. I also don’t think Burks needs time over Foye, but rather with Foye. I completely disagree with your Corbin love. Stats never tell the whole story and I think Corbin has had the players with a skill set to do a lot better than he has, particularly this season.

@Omar – I really hope that the Jazz arent going to play chicken with Hayward and Favors.

I have also stopped reading or listening to D Locke as he just seems to be towing the party line when it comes to analysing the team.

  21. @Jason your talking about that guy who is shooting 38% from the field right? He is a one trick pony he shoots threes that is it. In no way is he better then Burks. He was not better then Burks last year and that was Burks rookie year. He out played him in the off season so in no way can you say Foye is better.

Millsap is not more consistent or better then Favors right now. He just had 5 games that he was non existent. Which Favors had good games in. In no way can you say he can not score either. He scored 19 points against Denver on pure hustle plays. If Faried can score the points he does with out getting plays run just off of hustle so can Favors.

Favors if he plays over 30 mins gives you 16-12 with a shooting 56%. And he has room to grow. Millsap changes parts of his game but he will never gain as much as Favors can. Right now Paul is giving us 14-8 in 30 mins shooting 45%. He has a consistent role and has not produced consistently. Favors is yanked here there and everywhere with no consistent role.

Here is a fact for you number 3 picks have an 85% chance of becoming a star. We have two on the roster that are playing behind two players who have 0% becoming stars because that is not who they are. So we should give up the next 10 years is what you are saying correct? Cause everyone is worried about losing Millsap but no one seems to be worried about losing the guys that are going to be here next year. Instead they are intent on keeping happy the guys who very easily could just leave after this year.

  22. Omar says:

@disco, I think they are trying to have their cake and eat it too. Either the Jazz FO and Corbin are complete idiots for burying their talent behind 1 year players (Kanter, Favors, Burks, to a lesser extent, Hayward and Evans) like Al, Millsap, Watson, Tinsley, Foye (these 5 account for like 130 minutes per game), or they are slick buisness mean and trying to get everything without giving up anything. Either eay they are playing with fire.

Right in Dallan! Whats so irritating is that VETERANS like Millsap and Foye can have bad games and its just “oh no big deal,” but Hayward, Favors, Kanter, and especially Burks, have a bad series of plays and its bench them, DNP them, trade them, ect—and they are early in their careers! If you go by minutes Burks hasnt even played a half season considering Al got tons of minutes as rookie!! Yet hes excused and not the young players on Jazz roster. Thats BS.

@Jason, Favors and Kanter could have COMBINED for ONE single free throw in the first half and that still would have been more than the number of points they allowed!! We are talking net value:
Someone scores 20 points and gives up 19 thats plus 1.
Someone scores 3 points and gives up 1 thats plus 2.

So Favors and Kanter offensive game is already good, add that tobtheir elite D and it should not even be a debate who is and will be better.
