Game 20: Jazz 87, Magic 81
Posted by: TACOREV on December 5th, 2012
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. The Jazz hold off the Magic for their tenth win of the season, climbing back to .500.
Jefferson scored a season-high 31 with 15 boards, but hurt his back in the final minutes of the game. The seriousness of the injury is yet to be determined. Millsap scored 22 with four rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Mo added 9 & 7.
The Jazz held a large lead most of the way, but the Magic stormed back late. Nightmares of a repeat of the Clipper game flashed, but the Jazz were able to hold the fort and notch the win at ESA.
Glen Davis led Orlando with 18 & 12, while Jameer Nelson contributed 17 & 5 & 5. Arron Afflalo scored 16 and J.J. Reddick added 14.
The Raptors will be in Salt Lake City Friday night, where the Jazz are now 7-1 and 10-10 overall.

Bad teams at home, the perfect recipe for Jazz succes!
When the Magic were not turning the ball over, they ran a ton of their plays in the post, even posting up their wings like Affalo on Foye, Magic have no fear of Jazz interior D. Im sure scouts know where to hit the Jazz, Magic dont have the personnel to really hurt us, other teams will.
This was the first time Jazz have won the points in the paint since Nov 23 at home against Kings…tonight against the magic only by 2 points. Not to project to far into the future, but playoff basketball against quality teams that wont cut it.
Thank goodness for Big Al, and Millsap. We lose this game in an embarrassing manner without them. Jefferson, in particular, played the best game I’ve seen by any Jazz player this entire season.
Mo Williams made poor decisions, and was outplayed by Nelson.
Gordon Hayward and Randy Foye couldn’t hit shots to save their life.
Watson flat out can’t score.
Kanter should be stepping up and having more impactful games in Favors absence, and tonight he didn’t to that.
I’ll give Marvin Williams a pass in his first game back from injury.
Evans was awful in limited minutes.
If Al is out for awhile with this back injury, the Jazz better hope Favors is ready to step back on the floor and produce (and not just on the defensive end either).
@ KC LOL!!!
@ Jason Kanter needs more minutes he has averaged 15 with Favors out. thats absurd. Al played a great game , but Vucevic honestly made him look good. Vucevic still had 16 boards that shouldnt have happened. Kanter scored when he got the ball. Ty run a play for him. Hayward’s shooting is bi polar, But his defense is solid.
That’s the right moment to trade big Al !
I red that raptors and lakers were discussing a Gasol for bargnani+calderon trade, but the raptors are resisting in sending Bargnani away.
So why not involving a third team :
Lakers get Bell + Big Al or Millsap
Jazz get Gasol+calderon
Raptors get Millsap or Big Al
Add Jeremy Evans and maybe Burks to make it work moneywise + some assets from raptors (Aaron Gray ?) and lakers
haha Henri! exactly , trade stock game! Gasol has been struggling lately, but he is a top tier talent that hustles on both sides and plays team ball. Huge upgrade! at 18 mil I still think he is worth it.
Yeah but wouldn’t you guys rather get younger assets with more potential. I mean Gasol is like 30 something. That just makes the Jazz mediocre again. They need to pull off something Like Portland did last year to acquire Lillard.
We do have the young assets to develop, and we have the first-round picks for potential. If we need more picks, it can be included in the deal.
By sending away Al and Paul, we would need another strong interior presence (Gasol). We need a pass-first PG (Calderon), who would have another reason to stay in Utah: playing with a spanish teammate. Gasol is still an all-star player, he just can’t fit in a run-and-gun system like d’Antoni’s.
I think such a deal could work for all the teams involved: the raptors are in need of a big Al-type of big man, the lakers need a hustler and a technical 4 like Millsap.
@ Millslapped I dont think Corbin would use him right anyway. Hes already played in a triangle with Phil. So he can play a stretch. He can pass, drive, shoot, defend. If were going to get another big to fill the max salary spot Pau is ideal.
We do need to get one more 1st rnd draft pick IMO. So Al, Millsap, and someone else besides Kanter and Favs for Pau or another allstar and a 1st rnd pick. And a new coach is all i want for xmas.
Is this the 1st game where both Paul and Al have had a distinct matchup advantage in the same game? I think so. We were lucky tonight. They could hit none of their threes. If they would have even hit two the game would have been completely different. It was nothing we did either. They weeper wide open most of the time
You know its pretty sad when the Bobcats–MKG, Mullins, Kemba–have more buzz than the Jazz?!….s a d.
Its not even about immediate wins amd loses: I dont know if its cuz Im super busy right now or what, but that game last night was hard to watch, pretty disinterested.
My enthusiasm is becoming deflated. I totally see Jazz resigning Al, Millsap, anf most of 1 year vets. And the b.s. rhetoric well hear in off-season will be, “hey, this is a proven starting frountcourt, and as far as Haywad and Favors go, they are still under contract until end of season so well deal with that in the off-season (2013-14), I said well deal with it then…”
Jazz then will sign mediocre vets (over pay), trade Burks, Evans, Murphy. Hayward and Favors will take their talents elsewhere. Be at best 1st round exits (5 games), then blow up the team in 2016, and have the season prior to drafting DWill all over again, and stay their til we get lucky and draft a superstar player…that will eventually want to leave Jazz and so on and so forth.
Kanter is a tremendous rebounder, but lately, he hasn’t been hitting the boards very well. It looks like he is more interested in scoring lately. I’m glad he’s showing growth in other areas, but I hope he doesn’t continue to stray far from what he does best (rebounding, and defense). He is still trying to find that balance in his game.
I’m really getting frustrated with Hayward’s offensive inconsistencies. His only saving grace on some nights is his play on the defensive end (which is good, but not elite). Until our younger guys become more consistent on both sides of the ball, I doubt are front office will have the balls to make a big trade involving any of the vets.
Hayward’s rebounding is subpar also.
Watson is so good….
Hayward’s whole game is subpar…..I know he is supposed to be the great white hope, but come on….he is average at best..I’ve been saying that the whole time … C.J 2.0
