Game 22: Jazz 117, Lakers 110

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

There are few wins more satisfying for the Utah Jazz than defeating the Hated Lakers on their own floor, and Sunday night the Jazz did it for the second-straight time.

Six Jazz players scored double figures, led by Millsap’s 24 & 9 with three steals. Mo finished with 22 & 9, 14 & 11 for Jefferson, and 14 & 6 for Kanter. Hayward had 14 and Carroll added 10. Utah shot 54 percent and outscored LAL 54-34 in the paint.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 34 points. Jordan Hill had 17 & 9 and Jodie Meeks scored 16. Chris Duhon chipped in with 12 & 11 while Dwight Howard went for 11 & 16.

The Lakers shot 56.3 percent from downtown, hitting 15-of-28, which kept this from becoming a blowout. Otherwise the Jazz would have won this one by 20+.

The fourth road win for the Jazz, and what do you know, we’re two games above .500.

Next up, the Jazz will return home with their 12-10 record to face the Spurs on Wednesday.

  1. Jefferson’s defense looked good. They tried the pick and roll a couple times with Dwight and Kobe with Al on Dwight and he managed to stop it most of the time. The time he didn’t Millsap helped out and got a steal.
On offense Jefferson had a solid game. Making most of his shots and sharing the Ball well. He only took one stupid shot and it looked like he was looking for a foul.
I really liked what Kanter did on both ends of the floor. Evans also played well off the bench.
Demaree Is a a beast. I love to watch him. Everyone played really well.

  2. Millslapped says:

Great team effort. This is the same thing we saw against the Raptors. Keep it up Jazz!!

  3. disco says:

I only yelled derogatory remarks twice in the game and they were the two ridiculous shots from Al and Mo. Other than the the usual open 3s were annoying but the jazz passing was exceptional. I think Howard was a little surprised that Al didn’t roll over and let him through. Kanter needs more time, Carroll was outstanding and Hayward gets to the line at will. The way he ran the plays at the end makes Watson redundant. Go Jazz

  4. Omar says:

Kobe looked pissed as hell, Hahahaha!! Love it. Lets remember the Lakers have about a 30M salary more than Jazz. Hahaha!! Damn Lakers should be embarrassed!

So long as the Jazz dont feature Al, their offense doesnt lag. The times they went heavy iso, Al took a bad shot from distance. As opposed to Kanter that was at the rim scoring. Kanter is a beast!! Remember when ppl eanted to trade him after 1made SL game?!! Cant wait til Burks gets his chance. 3 of the Core 4 have shown they are quality and the future.

I saw Lakers fire Dntoni by all star break!! Haha.
ps Hill should not have been that big of a factor.

  5. Millslapped says:

The refs usually hate Millsap. They were actually giving him calls tonigt! I couldn’t believe my eyes.

  6. JuMu says:

Was at the game tonight. Only saw 2 other Jazz fans. So worth it to see all the dejected Faker fans during the 2nd half. Jazz win + Laker loss = Next best thing to NBA Championship for the Jazz

  7. It’s nice having depth. I’m not sure why everyone is in such a big hurry to trade one of our bigs. Injuries happen in the NBA, and the Jazz are in a better position then most teams to handle them. I’m beginning to get a bit concerned with Favors, and his foot. I’m hoping his condition doesn’t become a a chronic issue. We really need his defense on the floor, because right now, we just aren’t getting done on that end.

However, the offense is really clicking in the last couple games. The ball movement is terrific. Having Millsap finally play at the level we all know he’s capable of has been a huge boost for us. Hayward has really settled into his bench role, and seems very comfortable and confident out on the floor. Kanter played a terrific game, and Carroll continues to hustle all over the floor.

  8. Millsap may have been there on offense but he was not there on defense. Jordan Hill grabbed 6 offensive rebounds with Millsap “guarding” him.

Key to the game was Al only had 9 shots going into the 4th quarter. That is perfect because the more you give it to him the more the ball stops and does not move. Good to see the all movement again

Corbin is still not an NBA coach. Kanter is killing it scoring 8 points in 5 mins and he get benched. Foye is doing nothing and plays basically the whole 3rd quarter. Carrol fouls out and they send in Foye instead of Marvin. It is ridiculous. He made the mistake allowing Bell to play last year and he could shoot and play defense. Foye just shoots so what the heck is he doing out there? You would think he would learn I guess not. Also Kanter defended Howard pretty dang good, so no one needs to say Kanter can not handle more minutes and could not handle the best in the game.

  9. Adam says:

@Dallan, I watched Bell last year, he could play defense but he could not score. Every time he shot the ball it was a frozen rope banging of the back of the iron. Bell was the worst shooter last year and biggest disappointment. Foye can shoot and does it quite consistently. I agree with you that he does not play defense. His “attempts” are atrocious most of the time… It looks to me as though you are favoring Raja Bell over Randy Foye and that is a BIG mistake…

  10. KCJones says:

I have a rule where if we beat the Lakers I can’t complain or have negative comments. Jazz really did play a great game. Their defense was good and active, they were getting in playing lanes and I saw good effort from Al, who did a good job, and the offense actually looked like Jazz basketball, with bal movement until the defense was scrambling and then attack the paint. We hit timely threes to quench Laker runs. Bravo Jazz!

@JuMu – Way to represent Jazz nation! Were you wearing a hat with ‘222′ by chance?

I was concerned at the end of the fourth. Kobe and the referees sometimes make a great run at the end of games.

On another note, I posted last year that I thought Dwight was hugely overrated and I got blasted for it. He’s amazing at what he does – protect the rim and dunk. But he has not developed any new aspect of his game in all his 9 years or whatever it is. He can’t shoot free throws, he has no mid-range game, he is still a child mentally. He’s one injury that reduces his athleticism away from mediocrity. As shown by his play right now coming back from back surgery. He’s entitled and does not have the heart necessary to be truly successful. I think Bynum, even with similar maturity issues, still has more competetive drive and is a better player, if he were a little less injury prone.

Any way, Lakers have issues and I’m finding a lot of joy in thst >:)

I’m excited to see if we can carry over our newfound Jazz offense to the Spurs matchup on Wednesday. The Spurs are my 2nd-most hated team and I’d love to get a win.

  11. Steve says:

What a good win! To go in to Staples, on a sunday, and get a victory is just too too sweet. The entire team played well, the ball movement has been great.
I think the game changed as soon as the big enes stepped on the floor. I think he scored on 3 straight possessions, he was simply a monster. Its great watching him play like this, no fear, doesn’t care who he’s going up against he just plays his game, by putting the defender on his backside and backing him down in the paint. He looked good last night.
Millsap was great as well, its nice seeing him get back into a groove offensively. Hopefully he steps it up on the defensive side, because again, we gave up too many offensive rebounds. When Jordan Hill is the leading scorer for LA at half, something is wrong with that, and its giving up those offensive boards.
When Favors comes back its going to be very interesting to see what happens. Millsap has played very well, Kanter has played very well, Al has been ok. Having 3 big men in the rotation is perfect, 4 is a crowd. This is why we all want someone traded, we have 4 guys capable of starting, we only need 3.

  12. @Adam I am not favoring either. I think it is and was a mistake to play either or have either on the team. There is a problem when you have to many players. That is why the big men are finally coming out of their shell and playing well. If Marvin got more time on the floor he would play more consistently. He gives more to the team then just shooting as well. If a guy shoots 43% from 3 and gives nothing else he should play 15 mins. If a guy shoots 40% from 3 and plays defense, cuts, post ups, gets to the line he is much more valuable. But Marvin,Gordon,Burks all get shafted by giving Foye all the minutes he gets. Has he been good at shooting? I am not disputing that but he could not even stay in front of Jodie Meeks last night. Then at points he got switched onto Kobe. He was getting owned and Marvin was just chilling on the bench. That is unacceptable in my eyes. You have to stop Kobe you know you have to stop him and you stick Foye in?? Come on on one on here could say that is good coaching

  13. Guido says:

    Great win.
    1) Please kick Watson black ass, Thank God he’s injured and Tinsley can play.
    2) Awesome game all internals, weak external defense
    3) Love Carroll game, love hard D, love Bryant ass kicked.
    4) Forget bout Hayward’s offense (I remember Butler’s final game)
    5) If Jefferson go everywhere, Kanter is our guy, he’s gonna be big on this league. The magic diet worked! he moves, he pass, he can block, he had mid range shoot, love it!
    7) Millsap huge too.
Jazz players of the game: Jefferson / Millsap / Carroll

  14. Guido says:

    Spurs ur next!

  15. JuMu says:

@KCJones Thanks, but no I was wearing green Jazz beanie, and Jazz T-shirt.

  16. Adam says:

@Dallan, I see what you are saying now. I completely agree that we are log jammed at the SG, PF, and C spots. We cannot adequately allocate (or maybe we just aren’t) sufficient minutes to all of our players. The Jazz need to do one of several things: play guys equally, play the guys who are playing well in the situation, or make a trade. @Dallan you’re spot on that guys are suffering from no playing time and the Jazz are suffering when the right people AREN’T playing. When Foye is hot and there’s a meager SG out there, I say play him! But when he’s playing lazy defense on a good player and cannot find some rhythm, put in Hayward or Burks. Corbin needs to be more like Gregg Popovich: play the players that will get and are getting the job done… This goes fore EVERY position… This is the main reason why a trade may be in order…

  17. @Adam Exactly. There is no consistency with how the players are treated. That is my biggest problem with him

  18. chemistry , chemistry , chemistry …. finally something !

the bench playing time has put the team into a force. Nobody get mad if we stagnate again with favors back.

    But go JAZZ!!
