Meet
Game 23: Jazz 99, Spurs 96
Posted by: TACOREV on December 13th, 2012
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.Mo Williams’ 3-point buzzer beater puts the Jazz over the Spurs for the first time in five meetings. Utah wins its fourth straight and improves to 9-1 at the Solution.
Millsap led the Jazz with 24 & 12 and five assists, Jefferson added 21, and Hayward came off the bench to contribute 19 points, seven rebound and six assists.
Duncan and Parker each had big games for San Antonio, finishing with 22 & 21 (yes, that’s 21 rebounds) and 22 & 7, respectively.
I just got back from the game, and boy was it a good one. The Jazz are now 13-10, three games above .500 for the first time this season.
Question: Is this the biggest and/or best win of the season so far?
I say it is, without a doubt. The Lakers wins are always great, but considering how thoroughly San Antonio dominated us in the playoffs as well as the first meeting this year, it’s great to finally beat them.
Next up: @Phoenix Friday night, while the Spurs take their acting gigs to Portland to flop all over the Rose Garden.
Jazz players of the game: Paul Millsap and Gordon Hayward

I know I wasn’t the only one screaming at my TV telling Mo to pass it. lol
@ millslapped haha , for sure!
Awesome win!!
GO JAZZ!!
I’m jealous of everybody that got to attend this game!!! I watched it at work and almost got fired!!! Haha. It was well worth it. I work at a hospital and yelled so loud when big Al picked Timmy’s pocket and took it all the way and dunked it. I think I woke some patients up. Anyways, great team win. I loved the hustle of the whole team and it started and spread like wildfire from the junkyard dog!!
@millslapped add me to that list. great win. No idea why Kanter didn’t get more than 12 mins. I also think Hayward was the Jazz player of the game. He tipped the rebound to millslapped at the end and his timely threes and assists brought the Jazz back into the game. Can anyone tell me why Watson is getting game time.
I also want Patty Mills in a Jazz uniform
yeah watson sucks. Kanter is the easiest target ever to get the ball to. Hes so strong that hes always got a man sealed, and Watson struggled to get around defenders with the ball in his hand. Kanter beats his man multiple times in a row and scores and Corbin yanks him. Burks and Evans DNPs. Great development in a winning environment!
@Millslapped, you said it. They passed it in to Mo and I was like give it to Hayward, give it to anyone!!! I thought we should have worked it around and everything. But when he made that shot, I went on screaming and yelling!:D Definitely the greatest win of this year!!! In hindsight, I’m really glad Mo Williams decided to take the shot. We don’t have a go-to-guy, a star on our team. He decided to shoulder the burden, the pressure and take the praise or the scorn!!! And he DID IT!!! I’ve been thinking all night how much of a confidence booster these games are!!
First the Lakers on the road, then a buzzer beating Spurs win at home! Now we just need to take care of business in Phoenix.
@C-Style, that was probably the greatest, most clutch defensive play Al Jefferson has ever done!!! As good as Tim Duncan is, I believe Jefferson did a pretty good job last night. I saw him block a shot, steal, double team, take a charge, etc. He did a great job!!!
This was the best way to end a semester! Jazz beat the Lakers and the Spurs! (My two most hated teams)
It feels nice to rub it in the faces of my friends that are Lakers and Spurs fans for once.
@Milslapped I was totally yelling at the tv telling Mo to pass the ball. But when he made it I just pumped my fist over and over.
Lets keep it goin Jazz!
A great team win. The Jazz could have folded when the Spurs went up by 6 or 7 late, but continued to fight, and pulled out the biggest win of the season (up to this point).
Millsap and Hayward have both broke out of recent slumps, and are playing tremendous on both ends of the floor.
I kind of like the idea of Corbin going back and forth between Watson and Tinsley every few games. Both guys are at the end of their careers, and can probably use a little rest here and there. As a result, they should both have more energy come March and April. I kind of wish Ty would consider doing the same thing with Foye and Burks.
As long as the Jazz continue to keep all four bigs, and they are all healthy, Kanter will get limited time. He’s just the fourth guy on the totem pole right now. I don’t think Corbin played him less minutes for anything he did wrong, but I also think he wants to slowly work Favors back into the lineup (coming off the foot injury).
Wow amazing win! Very impressive! If Jefferson and Millsap had played every game like that, no one in their right mind would be talking about moving them. I really hope the Toronto game opened Al’s eyes for good about ball movement. The ‘extra pass’, to me, is what defines Jazz basketball, and the last three games show what results it brings. If the Jazz can keep up this level of play, and improve on the road, I would love to see them not make a move, because they could make some real noise in the playoffs. Its a three game stretch of impressive games. I’m just praying its the new reality and not just an outlier peak. Go Jazz!
I was yelling at my computer … add me to your list Millslapped.
The jazz were at -10 when they had no ball movement, and +10 when they had. The medium-to-long-term solution is still to trade (Al or Millsap or both) + burks + (watson or tinsley) + Bell. Right now, I’d say that Millsap should stay put till the end of the season. He can be a difference maker when he is less preoccupated by the defensive defiencies of Al.
Wow! Like I said before Hayward is our Pippen: does everything well, guards the best player with the ball (like Pippen guarding Stockton), handles the ball and makes dagger threes!! If you dont love Hayward you must carry a black cloud over your head as you go through life. Best thing to happen to Jazz was Hayward missing NCAA shoy against Duke, no way he falls to Jazz otherwise.
Why the heck is Watson even playing?! Tinsley is a better 3rd string PG, and Tinsley shouldnt even get rotation minutes when everyone is healthy, so why the heck is Watson. Kanter and Favors had a clogged paint cuz teams dont honor Watson O game?! WTF, while Burks gets DNPs. OKC has athletes, so we are going to need Burks, need to start playing him now.
This is the highest Al stock will ever be……pull the trigger now and we could get something very good in return. Jazz would still win without him imo. His shot was falling put hes pretty much a perimeter player—the small foward without great 3pt range—in the playoffs I want my C in the paint taking high % shots.
Amazing game….
Kanter starts that nice 2nd quarter… he puts the energy… dont forget it
1) Spurs you were Milsapped!
2) Hayward of the bench is an amazing fit, the best Corbin’s work
3) Jafferson has shown new features than last year… maybe he saw Tim Duncan videos last summer…
4) 2nd quarter was the best Jazz qauerter this year…
5) Hayward is best pg than Watson, doesnt he?
6) I said a lot of times… why the hell is Earl (not the pearl) Watson play over Tinsley… omg Corbin…
7) Great inside defense, better than outside one… again
9) Nice win over Spurs.
Jazz player of the game… Millsap.
Guido brings up a good point, has Corbin tried replacing all earls and Jamal’s minutes with Hayward? I wouldn’t worry about Hayward guarding the point, just his ball handling against some guards?…
He do it in Butler too…
If anyone heard the commentators, one of the guys said, “Corbin put Hayward on the bench because he wanted him more touch.” I have watched enough of his games and really want Hayward to the be the closer. He just needs more confident and some nods from the coaching staffs to be our closer. Win/lose I would rather have they develop him. A championship team needs a closer.
And someone to guard the opposing point guard. So that player would be Burks, but it doesn’t look like he will get significant playing time this year to learn.
There is no reason why Hayward should not be getting ALL backup PG minutes, then Burks could get some backup SG minutes. I still think Foye shouldn’t more than 20 minutes.
PG: Mo 30; Hayward 18
SG: Foye 20; Hayward 15; Burks 13
What a great game. I was freakin out all game! I will give props where props are due. Al had two plays that were great on the defensive end and that was awesome! Took the charge and then the steal..
Now here is my tough love for him and the coach. We tried to go with the Iso Al play in the 1st quarter. He may have scored 8 points but no one else gets involved on either end when we play like that. We were soon down. We fought back with the 2nd unit with BALL MOVEMENT. Why the heck did we lose that with the starting unit? No idea. Then we are up going into the half and we come back up and go Iso Al again and lose the lead go into the 4th tied. During the time the Spurs were making there run there was no timeout by the coach, no lineup change and freakin RANDY FOYE was on Danny Green again closing the game!! Did Corbin not learn last game? There is really no improvement from our coach. The in game adjustments should not take him 3 years to figure out.. We need to continue this ball movement and we will be very good. Still think a trade needs to be made. Kanter was KILLING it in the 2nd quarter and he gets pulled. It may not have been for something wrong but Corbin does not ride the hot hand unless their names are Foye,Mo,Al,Paul.. Did you all notice how Blair was struggling and did not see the floor again? Or how De Colo had the same thing happen to him?? Accountability goes along way and we do not have any.
@ThanVII and Omar… forget bout Burks guys… (Mr) Corbin dont like him… and last minutes Hayward guard parker remember that not Mo… my point is for kick Watson ass by the way… I dont like him ’cause Tinsley dosent play.
@Dallan I couldn’t agree more. There’s something about Corbin that makes it so he doesn’t learn anything from his mistakes. He will consistently play the vets and starters with unwavering faith, even when players like Hayward, Kanter, Favors, Carroll, and Burks play circles around them. If Corbin were to go, we wouldn’t even need to trade any of our players. A good coach who made good decisions, stopped ISO offense through Al and benched him, played the youth that has the talent to bring us to the top, we would be the heaviest team in the West, maybe the entire NBA. Our talent is limitless and most of our starters as reserves would make it so we have no chinks in our armor, we would play a full 48 minutes of competitive basketball. But when you have an armory full of heavy artillery and you’re too busy playing with a spit wad, you’re not going to win many fights.
I would love to see Hayward trained as a guard, very Magic Johnson-esque. I’ve said it since his rookie year. He has the best court vision of any player on our team, and if he were to go to a camp with Stockton or something, he would be the perfect chiseled PG, with size and quickness to outplay any guard in the game.
I was at the game last night, it was electric. I lost my voice from screaming so much. What a fantastic time to be a Jazz fan. Addition by subtraction is all we need-Cut out the tumors of Corbin and Bell, bring in a more liberal coach and a decent emergency PF or something, we’d be all set for a run at the championship. Our pieces are in place, we just need a better chess player.
First off I have to say this was a great game . They played hard and as a team . I have said all along that this team cannot win if they dont pay as a team . If they continue this we will win many more games .
@ Omar I think that you are right about Butler losin to Duke in the championship game . If Hayward would have made that shot to win it then someone else would have drafted him before us .
@ Dallan I am sorry but Corbin has really only had at most 2 yrs of coaching this team . His first year was already more than half over when he took over . Then the next year was a shortened season , and we are only 1/3 of the way thru this season . So as far as your comment that he has had 3 yrs is strechtin it a bit . So it appears that your dislike for Corbin has clouded your vision some . I actually like that Corbin has made an effort to try differant things . It appears to me that he is becoming more successful as the season wears on .
I personally think that this team is learnin to play together now . But I am sure that there will be many more growing pains before we finish this season .
Oh ya and dont you guys think that maybe the playin time thing may mean a trade is on the horizon . They may be just showcasin some players for that trade .
But really how can we have so much negativity when we got a win against our nemisis the spurs . To me that shows that no matter if we win or lose they will not win with the fans . What a pity … But I say go Jazz go . !!!!
@Jay How many times have we seen that same dang play with Mo running around with the ball in his hands and we get a horrible shot and miss?? All year we have seen it this is the 1st one that went in and that does not make it a good shot or play call. It was a HORRIBLE shot!
I am not an NBA coach and I can remember that Foye got burned by Green in the last game and every other game Foye gets burned. So in a close game what the heck is he doing in there?
I said this was a great game. I was screaming the whole time for the win. But the goal is a Championship correct? The goal is not just to beat the Spurs in the regular season right? So when mistakes are made no matter if it is a win or loss they need to be corrected. The players need to improve and the coaches need to improve. But the same mistakes are happening over and over and over with Corbin.
What has Corbin tried differently? Please tell me. Handed the keys over to Jefferson? Seen that. Started all vets even though bench players are better? Seen that. Called poor out of bounds plays? Seen that. It may be different players on the roster but it is the SSDD
Dallan , I am not sayin that things are perfect , they are not as I have said there will be more growing pains with this team .
That last second shot was a great shot , I dont care if he missed other shots thru the coarse of the nite . He has made many great shots for us in the coarse of this season . Like they say you have to keep takin the shot as a shooter till it starts fallin .
Anyway Go Jazz Go !!!!!
