Game 34: Jazz 87, Suns 80

Posted by: TACOREV on January 5th, 2013

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

The Jazz take down the Suns in Phoenix for their seventh road win.

Jefferson led all scorers, finishing with 21 & 8. Millsap had 19 & 10, while Hayward scored 14 and Foye added 13. Favors put in 10 & 9.

Marcin Gortat led the way for Phoenix with 18 & 11 and Goran Dragic had 17 & 6. Jared Dudley contributed 16/6/5.

The Jazz led most of the way, and were able to do what they should have been able to do in the last meeting against a bad Suns team.

We saw two short stretches of Alec Burks running the point, perhaps in response to the suggestions of some around here, namely Jazzaholic. His final stat line read four points, three assists, two rebounds, two fouls, and just one turnover.

Good to see Corbin branching out from his set-in-stone ways. Could he finally be starting to grow as a head coach? Hopefully we’ll see Burks with more chances in the coming games.

Back to .500 on the year, with a trip to Denver to face the Nuggets tomorrow (Saturday) night.

As quickly as Corbin impressed me with that move, he made me remember the fool he is by playing Watson in the 2nd half. The Jazz looked disinterested for the first 6 and last 6 mins of the game, but looked unstoppable the rest of the time. I was also unaware how terrible the suns are.

    I missed Kanter :(

I wonder if Marvin is still feeling his injury??

  3. @Taco I will wait and hold my judgement on Ty until the lineups are full and Burks get DNP again. He was forced to play certain lineups last year. It is happening again and we shall see what happens.

I think Dallan might be right, Corbin is someone who only switches from the tried and tested when forced by situations he cannot avoid. I also think Phoenix are a team with very little depth, ideal circumstances to try Burks at PG but against other opposition he’s not going to get much time there.

As good as getting the away win was, I already had this as a game as a must win if the team wants to get on the right side of .500 anytime soon. My surprise was that Phoenix are as bad as they are and the Jazz didn’t make more of it.

@dallan you sir are correct. You would hope tho, that burks and hayward will play really well together and force Corbin to play that lineup. If they continue to play like they did last, there is nothing but complete ignorance and incompetence that would keep them off the court… oh, wait… haha
I don’t know if anyone else felt this way, but when it was burks, hayward, and carroll there was tons more movement and activity. It was fun to watch them play, even tho they only scored 17 pts in the 2nd. haha

  6. disco says:

@steve but look how many the suns scored in the quarter

  7. @disco and 6 of those pts were after the starters came in haha

  8. Plus they have never played together. It will only get better as the time on the floor expands.. Hopefully it does.

  9. Omar says:

    Watson since Mo’s injury:
    131 minutes; 6 games; 1/16 FG; 0/5 three point; 4/6 FT; 12 rebounds; 33 assist; 0 blocks; 2 steals; 10 turnovers; 6 points.

    21.8 minutes; 6% shooting (not typo); zero % 3pt FG; 2 rebounds; 5.6 assists; 0 blocks; 0.3 steals; 1.6 turnovers; 1.0 points per game—ONE point per game.

    6 points in 131 minutes.

Watson steals minutes from Carroll and Burks. When they should be playing together. Favors, Millsap, Carroll, Hayward, Burks went on 11-0 run—a shut out.

Id rather have CJ Miles getting 22 minutes per game! I cant believe Im saying that, but at least CJ has a chance to go off, Watson….NEVER. straight garbage.
