Game 4: Grizzlies 103, Jazz 94

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

We got off to a great start behind Hayward’s 11 points in the first quarter. But Memphis charged back with a 16-2 third quarter run that put the Grizzlies ahead for good. The Jazz had several chances late in the game, but couldn’t make the most of them.

The Jazz were dominated inside. Zack Randolph scored 16 with 18 boards, while Marc Gasol added 22 & 8. Once again the Jazz allow a no-name guy to dominate them multiple times throughout the game, in Quincy Pondexter, who scored 14 points when he only averages two.

Hayward had arguably his best game of the season with 19 points and five rebounds, and Mo had another solid game with 17 & 8. Favors had a good game off the bench with 14 & 8, displaying some of that huge potential on a few plays where he finished at the rim.

Burks got seven minutes of non-garbage playing time during the second quarter, but didn’t really do anything.

The Jazz fall to 1-3 and will now come home to play the Hated Lakers (who are also 1-3) Wednesday night, in attempts to put their 0-3 road trip behind them.

Jazz player of the game: Gordon Hayward

So if you were to pinpoint the biggest reason we lost this game it would be…

    Taco,

You said Burks didn’t really do anything but that is inaccurate. He royally shafted us. Stupid shots and stupid passing.

    @KC,

I blame the loss on lack of focus leading to bad turnovers.

I would agree on the lack of focus. I think the 2nd unit that came in lost our 10-point lead adn our momentum in the second quarter. That was Burks, Foye, Evans, Favors, Kanter. No real PG, no real SF, no real offensive threat from the bigs (though Favors had some good jump shots), so some of that is on coach Corbin. Against a team that really pressures the ball, I think that was a bad lineup. Favors and Evans need a creator-type guard on offense at this point and Burks and Foye are not that. Kanter isn’t a reliable offensive threat yet either. Burks needs to stick with what he’s good at, taking it to the rim, not what he’s worst at, mid-range jumpers. Evans is not a SF. I guess if you’re 10 points up, though, that is the time to play your bench. But they didn’t come through.

Our starters came back in mid-way through the 2nd and kept on par, ending 3 up at the half.

The 3rd quarter we started up 3 and were down by 6 at the end. It wasn’t so much offensively, but we gave up easy layups and 3-pointers on defense. A lot of their easiest buckets came against Al. Quincy Pondexter (who??) scored 8 points in the quarter, Marc Gasol hits some shots and Conley drives off P&R for layups. Randolph gives them a ton of second chance points with a huge rebounding game.

In the fourth, our defense breaks down again and we give up too many layups, 3-pointers and free throws and they outscore us by another 3 points.

Its just the begining dont cry Jazz fans… remains Al’s trade (please God, please) and a lot of games… this was a difficult road trip and players are still tired ’cause preseason.

    1) TRADE BIG AL!!!!!!
    2) Give Burks more minutes!!!!
    3) Put favors on starting lineup!!!!!
    4) Jazz player of the game: Derrick Favors… Hayward omg that guy still having many serious cold moments… dont be sweet on him, its time to get finally better.

    GO JAZZ GO!!!

  5. KCJones says:

I think you need one of Hayward, Millsap, Jefferson or Mo Williams on the court at all times at least for offense. You can run the offense through any of those guys with consistent results.

  6. I actually thought there were some positives from this game. I know haha I am usually the pessimistic one. I am working on a post right now to cover some of that. But while I am here talking about this game let me state some things.

    1) The 1st quarter was the best quarter of basketball we have played all year. I know you are going to say that it was the 3rd quarter of the Dallas game but I disagree. In the 1st quarter last night we were on the road. It was a big game for Memphis and we came in and played hard on both ends

    2) Burks entered the game this was great. But the problem was he entered with a stupid lineup. Evans has never been a three and I am with Locke that as of right now I am not so sure he should be on the floor. I think we need 9 players on the floor and that is Mo,Marv,Gordo,Paul,Al,Favors,Kanter,Foye,Burks. Those are the 9 that should play and that is it. Unless a trade is made and then things can change. I liked the trade Jason put up to get Calderon but I would make one change. But we would have to wait until Aaron Gray could be traded. We do not need another PF. Favors,Millsap,Al,and Kanter are PF we need a big true 7 footer and Gray is a good back up C on our team that is HUGE! I would want him instead of Davis. But that is just me.

    3) After the game Corbin admitted that he made a mistake by putting that group out there. Even though his adjustments seem to take WAYYYY to long at least he is somehow now realizing that he needs to make them. This leads me with a tiny bit of hope. I still do not think he has the gonads to stand up to any of the Vets and tell them they are going to the bench.

    4) I understand Burks did not do great. But it was his first game. He probably had no idea he was entering the game and then he was like crap I gotta make the most out of this. Yes he needs to play better. But have Marvin or Foye played any better these last two games? They have just been given better roles with better players to play with

    5) I will never understand how our offense functions. Hayward was great in the first half. He was aggressive and was awesome. He took 13 shots in the 1st half if I am not mistaken and then in the 2nd half he only got 4 shots. That is ridiculous! You have a guy killing it and then you go away from that?? Also Favors hits two jumpers and then we do not go to him the rest of the quarter??
