Game 40: Jazz 104, Heat 97

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz. The Jazz hold on for one of their better wins of the season over the defending champs.
Jefferson finished with 23 & 11 to lead the Jazz, with Hayward scoring 22 and Millsap adding 17 & 9.
Hayward and Foye each hit 3-of-4 from 3-point range, as the Jazz converted 44.4% from beyond the arc while outrebounding the Heat 40-23.
LeBron James put together a 32/6/4/3/2 outing, coming 18 points short of eclipsing the 20,000 career points milestone. Chris Bosh scored 16, Rashard Lewis had 13, Mario Chalmers finished with 12, and Dwayne Wade contributed 11.
The 21-19 Jazz improve to two games above .500 for the first time since a Dec. 18 win over the Nets in Brooklyn put them at 14-12.
They’re now 12-4 on their home floor after beating a Heat team that now stands at 8-9 in away games.
Still 19 games to go on this home stand with five road games. Next up is LeBron’s old team (and everyone’s favorite player C.J. Miles’ new team) on Saturday night.
Jazz player of the game: Gordon Hayward

Great win against my most hated team. I was swearing alot during the fourth quarter and thought we were gonna blow it.
Lebron James is just out of control, I can’t believe how athletic he is. God I hate him.
Carrol was awesome, he really seemed to get under Lebrons skin. Hayward also seemed to be frusterating Ray Allen.
Anyways sweet victory. It would’ve been a depressing week at my house if we would’ve lost this one.
Given some credit to Marvin. He played fantastic D on LBJ, thats a reason why Hawks gave the Heat so much trouble. Millsap set the ton early by attacking rim, while Al played some really bad D in first quarter.
The only two players to make FGs in the 4thgames quarter…..drum roll…..Burks and Hayward!! Hayward thats are Offense not, iso heavy Al.
Play Favors more.
Burks and Hayward had 15 of the 20 fourth quarter points. Against playoff caliber defenses, you need players that can create or beat their man one-on-one of the dribble. Jazz have players that can do that–Burks and Hayward.
Great win really
1) Alec didnt do a great job today… im sorry for him
2) Heat are Lebron, Wade and a couple of guys…. isnt a team.
3) Hayward do the best baskets in the hard moments…no one can do it…. thank God we heve him. Im worry about that.
4) Great job on boards… congrats players.
5) Awesome Carroll d, I like that kind of players
5) Player of the game: Hayward.
Anyone know why that fan had to leave?
I can’t believe how automatic Foye is from 3. Can we get him in the 3 point contest please.
I was so nervous!
Hayward played great, but I would give demarre Carroll the player of the game. The jazz were down by like 6 and looking just lazy when he came in, and his energy alone sparked the huge run by jazz, and he completely frustrated lebron James. Hes the reason the jazz were even in this game.
I love the Jazz play of late. No matter what happens with trades, I pray we can maintain this gritty, team basketball. Detroit and Dallas said we were instigators. Miami was visibly frustrated. That is Jazz basketball, it’s why I’m a Jazz fan.
The bench sparked the 2nd quarter spurt and Favors is the only bloke that I’ve ever seen that LBJ can’t handle. @guido I didn’t think burks did any worse than tinsley or Watson. In fact his ability to create a shot with time running out rather than chucking up a prayer was beneficial. If anyone saw the clips/grizz game, we need to get Bledsoe.
Kanter and Favors need more time, Bosh couldn’t score on Kanter and he got most of his points shooting over Millsap
Awesome win! Loved the DC hustle..@tacorev Thanks for all these game reports!
@MIllslapped the fan was mouthing off to Wade. It sucks, because I’d assume that if I were spending outrageous amounts of money for a courtside seat, I’d have a little bit of a leash when it comes to my mouth and opposing players, probably given that the ability to talk crap to players like Wade would be one of my reasons for dishing out so much cash.
Wade hasn’t looked the same to me. But he’s got a game much like Derrick Rose. They rely SO much on pure athleticism to be effective, that I just don’t know how long they can keep it up. By 30-ish, that athleticism is on the decline and you have to find other ways to be effective. Wade hasn’t found it yet.
Great win for the Jazzerds, getting a split with Miami, the reigning league champs. We shot a lot of jumpshots and outside shots, but man, they were falling for the most part, along with our big men getting good looks inside. At least until LeBron decided that Al was NOT going to get any more. The Jazz were a bit slow to adjust to that. If I was Ty I would’ve subbed in Favors and ran more P&R, but oh well. Hayward made plays and we won.
Thats what happens when build these superteams—something will always be lacking. Heat got lucky OKC beat the Spurs; the Heats interior D is fronting the post and playing suffocating parameter D. Lakers are the inverse: have no speed on the parameter but length inside. The superteam things doesn’t work unless you have an LBJ, and even then they have visible weakness. Nets arent great, and Knicks are probably gonna trade Amare, so hopefully ut becomes clear that this superstar team concept doesnt work, unless you the best 1 or 2 player in all NBA. You need role players and depth to be a good team, and you need that plus allstar/superstar player(s) to be consistant championship contenders.
Do you guys agree that Ty coached well last night? Not saying it was Popovich status, or that we’ll see it again, but it was his best coached game in my opinion.
It was well done, Andy. I’ll agree. I’ve seen improvement in this team from top to bottom (except maybe Watson) these past two weeks. Is it because of the looming trade deadline? Maybe. I’m hoping though that Al Jefferson found some desire inside him to give effort on D and to box out for rebounds. I’m hoping Millsap doesn’t lose his lost-and-found-again offense and quick defensive hands. I’m hoping Hayward keeps hitting from three and making plays and that Burks keeps getting most of Watson’s minutes and that Coach Corbin coaches with a view to the future (AKA give young guys sufficient development minutes). I’m much more satisfied with this team over the past 10 games than I was with all the previous games. So keep it up!
My problem with Corbin has always been that he is gutless more so than than stupid. Anybody with a brain can see Watson is the worse player on the roster, so when he gets 20+ minutes, that is a problem. The other thing is the chicken or the egg??? Would Corbin only run iso heavy Al cuz Al cannot do anything outside of that, or does Al only score by iso heavy Al, so Corbin has no choice?
Well last night, Corbin left Foye on the bench for the 4th and gave Watson zero minutes in the 2nd half. And only ran 2 or 3 plays were they forced the ball into Al in the 4th quarter. I actually think LBJ helped the Jazz out!! LBJ KILLED Al, so Jazz had no choice and couldn’t throw the ball into Al which made Hayward have to create offense. The only time (outside of Heat fouling on purpose with less than a minute) Al got the ball in the paint was after a miss shot (Sap rebound) and Ray Allen ended up on Al, Al was then fouled for his first points in the 4th quarter at FT line (2:33 left in 4th!!). As much as I respect LBJ—he should not be able to shut down your center if your center is a legit BIG man.
Heat messed up cuz when they ran P&R they scored like 8 straight points all layups or dunks. Heat then ran three straight plays for 3 point shots?! LBJ just rose and shot, ran 3 point shot for Allen, and another for Lewis. Jazz by then were up 8. But Al’s D looked the same bad in 1st and 4th quarter.
In the first 6 minutes of the 4th, when Heat made a run, Burks was the only Jazz player to score (4 points); the rest of the Jazz ZERO points. Imagine if Watson was in the game?! Heat probably would have taken lead in those 6 minutes. Plus Burks made some sweet passes to Favors (got fouled no call) Millsap missed two shots. So Burks scored, got fouled, set up Favors for dunk, and Millsap for two in rhythm shots. In 40 minutes Tinsley and Watson combined for 3 points—Burks had 4 points in 8 minutes.
If Corbin really wants to impress me, hed straight up bench Watson DNP style, ZERO minutes. Millsap has really come on as of late; it was Millsap that had two HUGE O rebounds in the last 3 minutes of the game; whereas Al had ZERO offensive rebounds in 4th and one turnover. Al couldn’t even fight off LBJ for rebounds?! Its clear that Millsap has won out over Al, if they are still trying to determine which one to trade—Millsap wins out.
I feel like Jazz management has decided to go on without Al, but I think they will wait till after the season to either sign-and-trade or let him walk. The way they are playing may get them a 5-7 seed, and while we all want more, I think the FO is content with that for this year.
Thanks Taco for your info on all games played .
Thanks KCJones for your choice of words ” if I were Ty I would’ve subbed in Favours and ran more P&R , but oh well ” it is nice to hear it that way than a total bashing on him . I thought that Ty did a much better job with the time-outs and subing .
And just to make things clear to all of you that I by no means think that Ty is a great coach , just a young coach learning by mistakes like all our young guys are .
Thought that the first 3 1/4 s were good for the most part . But in the 4th we coulnt score and play good D ultimately we almost lost the game . We were lucky the 3s were not fallen on their open attempts . But Hayward made that 3 which stopped the tide goin their way . Then he made a crucial fade away shot that gave us a cushion that was all we needed to win .
@Andy. Unfortunately doing a S&T for both Al and Paul is EXTREMELY difficult under the new CBA rules. On another blog a guy broke everything down and there are about 3 teams that could actually do a S&T for these two players and of those 3 none are unlikely. So if we wait to S&T we get nothing for them. So unfortunately if they are content with that then they are not very smart. At this point anything we get back for them is better then nothing.
And lets be clear here. Getting cap space does NOTHING for the Jazz. We have to spend so much money. Detroit once had this happen for them and they ended up signing Ben Gordon and Charlie V. YAY!!
I was thinking more that they would be resigning Paul and S&T Al. By no means do I endorse it, it is just what I think management is planning on doing.
I have to admit Ty coached this game well. Don’t like the fact that he rode the starters so hard. He still should’ve played Demarre Carroll and Gordon Hayward more. But at least he didn’t totally blow it, like he very often does. This game definitely showed signs of improvement. Like he actually seemed like he had a handle on what was going on.
Play of the game: Favors’ screen on Chalmers! Awesome, and brought the crowd to it’s feet. Also, loved seeing Derick bang down low against Lebron. It looked like he was able to push him around pretty good.
@NA, I’m glad Favors was able to do well on LeBron. However, when LeBron can still be decently effective on offense/defense against a guy like Favors…that’s scary!!!
