Myck Kabongo

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

I know it is way too early to talk 2012 draft but with the lockout threatening the entire season there is nothing else to talk about.  Besides we still have college basketball and there are several prospects to watch. One in particular is University of Texas incoming freshman PG Myck Kabongo.

This year’s draft was supposed to be one of the weakest. Next year’s draft is supposed to be one of the deepest. The Jazz have a lineup of the future with Burks, Hayward, Favors, and Kanter. The only thing missing is a point guard. With two picks in next years draft I’m betting they take a look at one. Assuming the don’t make a major trade for one.

Here are ESPN Draft Analyst Chad Ford’s positive about Kabongo:

  • Pure point guard
  • Excellent floor vision/leadership
  • Makes very few mistakes
  • Good athlete with quick first step
  • Great first step to the basket
  • Good shooter with range out to the 3-point line
  • Committed defender
  • Great kid
  • Negatives:

  • A bit undersized (He is listed at 6′1)
  • You can check him out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bC-sV1tDE8

Just someone to keep an eye on during the upcoming season.

Wow. We just got done slaughtering the dead horse that was the 2011 Draft. Let’s please not start on the next one already.

I’ve heard about this guy, he would be a solid addition. I assume he’d be the first PG off the board, at least at this point, so it may be difficult to get him

      Myck Kabongo?

Is that a made up name?

I barely knew enough about this year’s draft class after a full college season, I’m not going to pretend I have a clue as to the next draft class.

But you’re right. The 2012 draft may be the only thing we actually get to talk about for this upcoming season.

Gimmie Rell Corbin baby! If his highschool game translate to college, WATCH OUT! He is going to be a Point God!

    5. Bebop says:

Another thing worth mentioning is that he chose 12 as his college number because Stockton is one of his favorite players.

I do love that he decided to come here even after all the stars left in the draft. He made a promise to Coach Barnes and he kept it. That’s worth a lot to me.

But it’s too early to talk point guards. Not because it’s too early to talk about college basketball, but because the point guard spot is one place that athleticism won’t trump the in-game intangibles (with rare exceptions). How many GMs would have taken a guess on a point guard like we did with Kanter? We won’t be able to assess this kid’s decision-making until we see a full college season. And Barnes has a way of taking good kids and teaching them to make terrible in-game decisions. I’ll have to go to some games and see what this kid can do.
