Alec Burks = Ridiculous Talent

Posted by: Damian on June 24th, 2011

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

I have been a Jazz fan my entire life and have been watching the Jazz for years and years. I have never seen this kind of player on our roster before. Not saying that he is the best player the Jazz have seen by any means. But when was the last time that we have had a 2 guard that could play like a B. Roy or a D. Wade? None that I can remember, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. When this guy developes into an NBA player, (which I think it’s just a matter of time before he does) he will be the guy we put the ball into his hands with 2 min left in the game and let him go to work. Check out the video I posted.

  1. He looks just like a Ronnie Brewer. One difference is that Burks can shoot. Brewer couldn’t. I am hooked on this guy.

  2. I also saw that Kanter is wearing #0 and Burks is sticking with his college number, which is 10.

  3. Damian says:

I think he is going to be way better than Brewer. For those who are concerned about his shooting. Here is another video, this is from his pre draft workouts. Lots of shooting drills.

David Locke says that his best outcome is a Paul Pierce/ Brandon Roy player. If not, he’ll be like Brewer but can shoot.

I just watched their interviews from after the press conference and I am psyched. These kids look so excited. And to hear that it was Devin and Gordon who reached out to these guys makes me feel much better about the leadership of the team. Hayward has to turn into a leader for these two kids. They both have personality things (immaturity for Kanter and attitude for Burks) that a calm personality like Hayward can help temper. These guys are going to be good. I hope they stick around.

Here’s hoping Golden State sucks next year, but not too bad.

I am excited. When was the last time you saw this much talent on our team? We have had teams that had some talent, but we now have an Former All Star who was looking pretty good toward the end of last yr. Al, if he continues on the way he ended last yr, is sure to be an All star this year. Millsap, though undersized plays like an All Star. Favors, Should be an All Star soon, hope he surpasses expectations. Hayward, was that him stopping Kobe last yr? How about the come from behind block on Chris Paul? Just to show you that wasnt a fluke, I have video of him doing the same block earlier in college. Kanter, oh, my Talent just oozing out of that kid. Then Burks. How many of you realize we walked away with two kids who were top of their position in this draft?

Okur, was once a very valued player, hence “Money man”. AK if resigned was a one time All Star, and showing some good game last season after Deron departed. Miles, I want to brag him up, but a few 30 + or 40 games are hard to talk about when your averaging 13 ppg. Evans, man he can be exciting. Though his minutes are limited, and he is lighter than air, he puts up numbers every time he hits the floor. Bell, Kobe killer himself. I would be happy if he just passed around some knowledge and leadership.

When was the last time we were this deep? We’re not done yet.. Whats next? I am really excited. A year to gel, get healthy, strengthen and grow. Its exciting times. Burks was above, check out the rest of your Utah Jazz Team.

I love Burks, he was one of the guys I wanted most in the whole draft. I don’t think we’ve had this type of player in a long time. Some people keep saying he’s just another athletic SG that can’t shoot like Ronnie Brewer, but he’s not. For so long I’ve wanted us to have a player that could get his own shot and get to the rim like Burks should be able to. I’m really not too worried about his shooting ability. This guy has the tools necessary to become a great player for us, as do our other young guys. I didn’t think this draft would renew my faith in KOC, but I think it has. We could become very good. But there is still plenty of work to be done to solidify this team. KOC, good to hear you’re not done yet.

  8. Colten Davis says:

David Lock is retarded, just for the record. But I like Burks, just hate Kanter.

  9. Chase says:

I’m not sold on this kid. To me he’s EXACTLY like Ronnie Brewer besides one thing.. Defense. Unless he’s slashing to the hoop or coming off a baseline he’s worthless. On both ends.

  10. Shockwave says:

Burks is the man. Was bummed we passed on JV and then Leonard but I’m really starting to get behind him. Smooth is the word for this player.

Too bad there won’t be a season.

  11. Railen says:

Chase their is one huge difference between him and Brewer on offense, and that is he can create his own shot with the ball in his hands. Brewer could not do that. He had no 1 on 1 game and only scored by moving without the ball.

I know that may not sound like a lot but that really is a big deal. He also passes much better then Brewer could ever dream of passing and might end up as good a passer as say AK.

  12. Van says:

    @ Chase

People forget this kid is only 19 and we picked him 12th in the draft, if he had a perfect game he would have gone much higher.

That said he has the tools to be a good defender and even as Van Gundy noted, his defense wasnt actually that bad, he was on a terrible Colorado team with no help.

That said a players shot is usually the most correctable and Brewer was an exception due to the way his arm healed from being broken when he was young. Burks will benifit from being on a team where he isnt the only offensive weapon, He can even run the point at times due to his smooth handle, I say a great pickup.

Its shocking that people are complaining about Burks not having a consistant shot but so many wanted Knight and Singleton, lol.

  13. Jake says:

Brewer is no comparison to Burks, brewer is a very different player. A base line player and slasher. Gets into passing lanes and gets you points from his own efforts, high leaper and finishes strong. Good defender and much bigger stronger than burks.

Burks is a totally different player, not even close in comparison. And I’ll tell everyone that Burks mechanics on his shot are sound and efficient. Some of his shots when he gets tired go back then forward which he drops hi shooting percentage when he does that and it ussually only happens when he’s tires and fatigued and is trying to get a little extra push, but with a shooting coach that knows and understand mecahnics keeping him in check he’s going to shoot a good percentage and he’ll transition to the NBA 3 as well. He has a good verticle which means he can puch less and guide more keeping his shot tight and on target. I think he’ll do well, and with Hayward shooting well that will make sure he competes to do the same.

But athletes like him aren’t picked to shoot jump shots all day he is going to be in attack mode and create off the dribble. Thats why they wanted him. We need so much more of that whil keeping defenses honest on him to stretch the floor as well. He’ll come off our screens better thatn others whith his jump shot I can tell already.

  14. Arnell says:

Burks will relieve Hayward at the SG position this year. And, I also agree that he will play some PG with the 2nd Unit playing along side Devin Harris playing SG. Earl is Earl. He is the steady veteran who will mentor both Harris and Burks.

Eventually, when Alec has learned to play both positions (SG/PG), the Utah Jazz Corbin way, he will eventually take over as our main PG. I believe that.

The Jazz has, indeed, found an heir apparent to DWill in Alec Burks (in progression from this year to next when Devin’s contract expires).
