The only thing I hate worse in sports than the Lakers are Laker Fans

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.First off this is more of a rant than a blog so I apologize up front if this is not what you typically like to read on this site. I usually try to be inteligent and don’t speak out of my butt when I comment or write blogs here. But today I feel like letting it out.
What an awesome day it is in the NBA to see Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson not get another ring. I know, I know I’m being such a hater, but everytime I see people wear purple and gold it makes me sick, especially in our own arena. This has been such a disappointing season with Sloan retiring, Deron being shipped off and us not making the playoffs. But today seeing the Lakers get pounded and swept really takes some of the sting away. I am just glad that Kobe doesn’t have more rings than Michael Jordan, even though he is an amazing talent and is one of the greatest of all time, he is such a jerk and I cant stand him.
Here is my biggest gripe with Laker fans. I live in Seattle where there has been a rich history of the NBA here until a few years ago. I was out watching the Mavs play the Lakers at the casino and so many people were rooting for the Lakers. I asked one person who was sitting near me “Why do you like the Lakers?”. Instead of him saying I’m from LA and have been a Laker fan my whole life, he said “because of Kobe”. I then asked him “were you a Bulls fan back in the Michael era?” He answered “Of course”. The funny thing is, this mentality is pretty common with most people I come in contact with who are Laker fans. I am a die hard Jazz fan win or lose, thick or thin I’m in for life. I wear my Jazz apparel to my office where people here in Seattle hate the Jazz, well the NBA for that matter. But I always run into people rooting for the Lakers and it’s always the same thing, they root for them because they are the best. I guess it’s easy to root for a team that wins all the time. But what I want to know is are you still gonna root for them when Kobe is gone and they aren’t making the playoffs? My guess is that the majority of people wont, just like I spopped seeing Bulls jerseys everywhere after Jordan retired. Thats why it makes me sick to see so many people at ESA cheering the Lakers on.
I know this doesn’t provoke much thought to a great dialogue of inteligent basketball talk. But as Davide Locke would say “Emptin the noggin after Lakers loss”
GO JAZZ!!!!!!

Thanks for posting this. The Laker fans I have met in Utah, mostly at the ESA are completely bandwagon fans. They know nothing of the history or even the strategies of Laker basketball. Now there are admitedly Jazz fans like that and some of them have really come out of the woodwork with the down year this year. But I think most Jazz fans understand that being a fan means riding it out in good years and bad years. I am really interested in seeing what happens to the swarm of Laker fans at Jazz/Lakers games this season if the Lakers have an average year or decide to blow up the team and start over like Magic Johnson suggested. Laker fans are a fickle bunch at best.
My thoughts exactly. I can’t stand the frontrunner mentality of people. It’s as if they believe that cheering for the current winning team makes them “cooler” because somehow that means they are “cool” enough to like the “cool” team, and thus makes them feel better about themselves. That’s really what it’s all about… because even though their life sucks, they can at least find happiness in cheering for whatever team is favored to win the championship and/or whichever team is the current trend, so they can feel “cool”… when in reality, 99% of the time they are just complete tools. And a tool isn’t cool
@ Tacorev… thanks for the insight. Your posts are always colorful. And yes a tool is not cool
The only one I feel bad for is Jackson.. Not a great way to end a top notch career. So glad this guy is leaving the league, now maybe we will see a ring.
To see Kobe’s face last night was priceless. Not only swept, but one good kick in the rear on the way out. So very awesome..
Funny thing about the fakers fans, they will probably be Miami fans next season..
I also must point out how funny it was to see how much class the Laker players had while losing. Those guys are the biggest babies in the league. They’ve enjoyed so many years of NBA success thanks to the extra Benjamin’s that Kobe and Phil can bring in to the league revenue, that they couldn’t handle an a– kicking.
I always want to go to Fanzz after a night like that to see all the laker fans rushing in to buy new jerseys. Can you imagine their despair trying to decide which jersey to buy next? Wade, James, Bosh, Garnett, Pierce, Durant, Westbrook, or even Randolph.
It’s easy to cheer for Goliath…look how big he is…of course he’s going to win!
But not me, I love to see the cocky overconfident Goliath fall to the little humble guy with just a slingshot.
We’re now looking at Memphis/OKC/Dallas as the team to represent the West, and I’m really OK with any of them. I think Dirk and the Mavs got screwed by the refs when they lost in the Finals. I like Durant and everyone on OKC except Perkins and Westbrook. I like pretty much everyone on Memphis. I would much rather see one of those three West teams win than the Celtics, Miami or Chicago. I don’t think the Hawks can make it all the way, but I’d like to see them beat Chicago.
@Patrick are you serious?? The guy wins 11 rings and you feel sorry for him?? I can’t think of a better way to see him go out. It was fantastic! He sat there watching his baby players throw their tantrums and all he could do was sit there like a helpless, embarrassed parent. I was loving every second of it.
@KC I love the David & Goliath comparison. And I agree about the West. Normally I would hate to see Dallas win it all but after what they did to the Lakers for me, I wouldn’t mind so much this year. Anything as long as the Heat, Bulls, or Celtics don’t win it
@TACOREV: I feel the same way . These triple star made teams need to be knocked down a notch.
