Summer League: Burks and Kanter

Posted by: Trent on July 12th, 2012

The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.

Is it just me, or were there a lot of naysayers after day one of summer league?  Now that we have more games to go off of, I’m suprised no one is talking about how well Burks and Kanter are doing.

Summer league doesn’t say much in reality, but it is really nice to see these two playing well.  Evans and Murphy look pretty good as well.

What I’m wondering is this:  Why was there so much negative feedback from Jazz fans after game one but hardly any positive feedback from the fans now?

I love watching the Jazz and I for one am happy with the progress of our young players.

Because when they do bad. It’s because they’re sucky players, but if they do good its just summer league.

My favorite is during the season. When a player does good, everyone screams for extension. When they do bad, everyone screams trade.

The site is a genuine emotional roller coaster

  2. my opinion has not changed I enjoyed seeing them play even during game one. I continue to say the same thing Corbin has to let them play. You cannot give Burks and Kantar 10 minutes a game. I like Murphy and hope get gets quite a bit of time next year too. Let the young men play.

  3. Patrick says:

I still stand by you have to play the best players on the floor. If someone doesnt have it one night, find the player that does. You dont play guys just in hopes to develop them, they need to earn it, or whats to keep them hungry. Eh, why try, I’ll get my minutes, because they are trying to develop me. Lins, Mathews, and Brewers are not made by just giving them minutes. They jumped up and took them when they had the chance.

Carlos Boozer is a perfect example. Guy could score without trying. Could make his stats with hardly a sweat. The sad thing was, he knew he would start and croozed. Why do you think he played no defense? Didnt have to, he could Crooze to his stats and look like he was dominant. Could you imagine if he played with one tenth the intensity that Millsap has, what that one joker (Boozer) could have accomplished?

On the other hand look at Sap. Constantly told he is too small for he position. Constantly counted out. Every single yr, he improves something. Every single year he busts his tail, and doesnt sit out half the season with a broken wrist from tripping over a suitcase.. Bah.. Earn your time, take it away from your fellow players. It makes and keeps the whole team better as a whole.

  4. Burks and Kanter are dominating, and they better be. They are playing against worthless oponents. There is a reason they were lottery picks and the rest went undrafted. I love to see them dominate.

  5. I like Jacob Pullens game from the 76rs as a PG

  6. I agree you have to earn your mins but at the same time do you expect the young players to stay with us with 10 mins a game? If they do not get the time they are not going to want to be here. Do you see anyone else taking a player 3 overall and then sitting them on the bench? You do not improve sitting either. You need to play to know what works and in what situations

  7. @Patrick. First off I’m loving your new name for Carlos Croozer. LOL. Second thing, it wasn’t even his wrist, it was his PINKY!

I’m the one that originally posted how bad Kanter and Burks played in game 1, so I can take some of the blame for starting the talk. BUT, I NEVER said I had given up on either player.

I said they struggled. And they did. But the important thing is, they both seemed to learn a few things from that game one. Kanter’s been a double double machine, and Burks has been going off. It’s great.

I’m not gonna lie, I overreacted and panicked a little after the first game. But I never dismissed either player or even formed an opinion on either of them, except for maybe these two things: Kanter is going to need more time to develop (but it will be worth the wait), and Burks is not a point guard.

I said those two things a while ago and stick by both of them.

At WORST, Kanter is going to be an unstoppable rebounder and guaranteed double double, and Burks is going to be an explosive slasher and energy player.

    Go Jazz.

  8. Also, loving what I see out of the new kid. Murphy seems promising. And also, I LOVE JEREMY EVANS! The kid just needs to beef up and learn how to play defense (and no people, just because you’re capable of blocking shots does NOT make you a good defender!!!).

I really do hope to see more Evans this year. No CJ Miles and no Raja Bell means I’m happier as a Jazz fan!

Biggest disappointment for me has been Demarre Carroll. I was expecting good things from him! He did sprain his ankle, but he hasn’t been playing as ferociously as he did for us at the end of the year.

Pogo, Enes and Alec are playing like they are already experienced NBA players, ohhhhh, that’s right, they are!

But, they are playing better than expected. In fact, they’re dominating this tiny cross section of players, who will never play in the NBA.

Kevin should be invited to training camp and make the team. It looks like another successful 2nd round pick for KOC.

DeMarre is a better role player, behind NBA talent, where he can scrap and cause havoc. Summer league isn’t his best showcase. His ankle hasn’t helped either.

It’s a lot better than watching the test pattern all summer. It’s hard not to doze off, when our main guys are not on the floor.

Only 3 months until we can watch some real games.

  10. KCJones says:

If Kanter pans out to be a 12-15pt, 10 reb, good defender, I think that’s a win for the 3rd pick.

And if he’s that in year 2-3, even better as that’s still lots of time for improvement over a career.

  11. @ Patrick I am not saying just play them for minutes. You give these guys minutes on the floor and they will earn those minutes. You example is exactly my point with Carlos Boozer. Why did he play for the Jazz because he was “experienced, and seniority” (this is my opinion) I personally did not think they guy deserved minutes. Had they given Milsap a little more time on the floor they would have seen that he could have played more minute than Mr. “and one” yeller. I think Boozer is horrible by the way look what he is doing for the Bulls. At least the coach had enough balls to sit him in the 4th quarter of the playoff because he figured out he is horrible.

Ok back to my post sorry for the rant on the worthless Boozer.

Corbin did the same thing in the playoffs this year. Some how after working hard to make a playoff run Corbin decides to start Howard because he has experience. How did that pan out?? Not saying we would have won the series but my point in saying let them play is they are good and need the time to show that.

I like what the Jazz have right now and think they have a great chance to compete.

    Mo Williams/Burks/Tinsley
    Hayward/Burks/Murphy
    Ma Williams/Carroll/Evans
    Favors/Milsap/Evans
    Big Al/Kantar/Favors

This should be the 12 man rotation

Earl can sit on the bench in case there is any need or injury at point

C.J – trade him or sit on the bench in case there is any need or injury

Find another to make 15 but I really think the Jazz have a 12 man rotation that in my eyes looks promising.

    Just my opinion though.

  12. I think one of the problems with the Jazz last year is they never had a consistent lineup. While that throws teams off for a while, it’s pretty easy to adjust after just playing one game against us (that’s why the big lineup ceased to be effective against teams that we played more than once).

The starting lineup was contsantly changing, and players really didn’t know what their roles were. We had bench warmers (Watson, Miles, and Bell) complaining and clamoring for a spot in the starting rotation.

Having a consistent first and second unit is the first step towards coalescing as a team.

    Starters:
    Mo Williams
    Gordon Hayward
    Marvin Williams
    Derrick Favors
    Al Jefferson

    2nd unit:
    Jamal Tinsley
    Alec Burks
    Demarre Carroll
    Paul Millsap
    Enes Kanter

Sub in Jeremy Evans at the 4 and Kevin Murphy at the 2. Voila! CONSISTENCY!

  13. Spot on Dallan.

Lottery picks are a risk you have to take if we want to be anything in the league. Every championship team does it. Its a risk picking them in the draft. And you have to risk playing out their potential when their young and letting them make their own mistakes to tap the talent.

I wish we were doing the second summer league. Burkes rocked it. He think he needs to play more games at PG and work on shooting/passing selection.

Kanter I thought is doing great. He is fumbling on the offensive post up because he is trying to integrate new moves. It would be frustrating. Im thinking he will play this year kind of like favors did his rookie year. Not sure which post move to go to. one day he is going to dominate.

I would love to send Burkes, Kanter, Evens, and Murphy to the next summer league games and play them all game to get some more game experience .

  14. I kind of think we have Carroll’s spot covered this year. Hayward, Burkes, And Murphy at the SG #2.
