Let’s Get To The Point
Posted by: Stephen Loveless on October 22nd, 2012
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.So Harris is gone. That’s that. I’m still on the fence a little. He was really looking good towards the end of last season.
Mo is here. Again, that’s that. I’m sitting that fence as well. I’ll be honest. There is just a bitter aftertaste from his Cleveland days. No actual stat or reason for my hesitance with him. What I’ve seen has built my confidence in him. The Jazz always seem desperate for better shooting, which I think he can offer.
No we come to the meat of the issue. Alec Burks. Is he a shooting guard or a point guard? His size says shooting guard but I think I like him at the point. From comments on previous posts I gather that many Jazz fans feel the same way. I dare say that Williams deserves the starting position but I think Burks backs him up over Tinsley.
What would happen if we did start Burks? Several people, most notably Karl Malone, think that he would do extremely well under the pressure and should be given the opportunity to lead the team.
So let me throw something else out. It’s not an uncommon opinion that Millsap and/or Jefferson should be traded. So what do we trade for? I would love to see James Harden here but I’m not sure I could find a worse fit for Salt Lake City. Maybe Metta World Peace….
Kyrie Irving crossed my mind. Cleveland could use some help in the front court but there’s no way they are parting with that lightning-fast wad of talent.
We don’t need or want more bigs. I hate to take playing time away from Hayward or Burks. I think we bring in a good point guard with Burks as backup. Move Mo over to the two with Foye as backup. Then Hayward, Favors, and Kanter. I would rather trade Jefferson and put Millsap as sixth-man than vice-versa.
I have no concrete answers and I have no crystal ball. Are we all just wishing that Deron Williams had worked out?

You will find it hard for anyone to want Metta World War..
I wanted Burks way before they drafted him. I think he will do fine in any of three positions.I think with Curry having problems in GS theyf may need a point. I would be in favor of parting with both Tinsley and Watson for as little as a second round pick.Burks, Foye, or even Hayward as backup. Or if they move Tinsley and Watson keep Quinn.I don’t think you will see any bigs moved until trade deadline. OH and throw in Bell with any trade even if it means Jazz have to wave another bad contract coming in..
There is no question, you need to get off the fence about Mo. His game, and leadership, fits so much better with our team than Harris did. He has nothing to prove, to me atleast, about that this year. Its already shown early in this preseason that his game will fit better.
Alec burks is a shooting guard. His first option is to shoot, second option is to attack, third option is to draw a foul, and if none of those happen, then he’ll pass! haha And that is totally fine with me, the 2nd unit needs his scoring mentality.
Mo really struggled with CP3, but that had to do with the fact that Al and Millsap were not playing the P&R well. I really loved that Mo went straight to Al after he body fouled CP3 under in the paint. Harris would not have done that, despite Al being useless against the P&R. So either Al’s gonna play a lot better or Mo’s gonna kept getting into him. So that is a HUGE positive.
I would love Kyrie!……BUT…..Lakers are going after him. I keep hearing Lakers are keeping Gasol AND MWP cuz they want their expiring contracts right in two years so LBJ can opt out AND then the following year sign Kyrie. So the future giant Jazz are up against is gonna be Howard, LBJ, Kyrie, maybe Kobe.
The PG I would not mind going after because I think he fits what we need and then we would have a decent back up would be Calderon. I do not think he wants to be in Toronto but I do not know if the Jazz would do that trade.
I really wanted Eric Bledsoe last year at the deadline because he was not being played and I thought we could pry him away. Locke told me Bledsoe was not good and the Jazz do not want him. Then this year he has changed his tune and supposedly really likes him. I thought we could have put a package together to get him but we did nothing
I can’t ever see Alec Burks being the Jazz PG of the future. He doesn’t fit the Jazz PG mould. Yes he penetrates, yes he scores, yes he draws fouls but he’s not a great passer. The way he currently impacts the game is through his individual talent and athleticism, he’s not a team player in the same sense that you would from a true PG.
Your last post said you liked Jefferson and now Harris . . . sounds to me like you hate defense.
But in all seriousness, there are some things in here that I agree with. We do need to trade for a better point or a draft pick that will get us a better point and that trade will involve one of our big men. I can only pray that it wont be Kanter, Favors, or Milsap. Mo Williams is not a long term solution to the biggest hole on our roster.
I’m hesitant to put Burks at the point simply because he’s to one sided. This is a concern of mine for Burks in general though. He really needs to develop another aspect of his game besides slashing and off balance lay ups. That thing he develops needs to be either a decent shot or a passing game. If he learned how to pass the ball then sure give him a shot at the point.
Salt Lake City doesn’t have a shot at James Harden and Meta what ever the heck is not someone you want on your roster.
Harris was wildly inconsistent. So while Mo isn’t a significantly better player than Harris, he’s much more consistent of a player and fits this Jazz team much better.
Burks isn’t a point guard and shouldn’t be viewed as one. Sure, he could slide over and handle the PG spot if needed to, but he shouldn’t be looked at as if PG were his natural position. His strengths and skill set are best utilized at the SG position.
In the home game against the Clippers, Corbin used Foye as the backup point guard when Mo went to the bench. I’m not too sure about the prospect of Foye running the point, but he might be a better choice than Tinsley and he’s definitely better than Watson.
Burks is not a point guard.
I do like Burkes at PG , his passing game will come when he realizes that he is legit and that assist stats look better than points. You could still have Mo with him , but mo hits 3’s so makes sense to have burks bring it up on offense.
Jazz need some more speed, damn we look slow with some of those lineups. That unit with Jefferson , Millsap, and marvin is so slow.
And has anyone noticed that Favors looks like he traded bodies with Kanter? Im sure he put on alot of muscle but he is moving like tar and looks a bit doughy. I think I like both of them at 240 lbs. They are both strong and athletic enough to be light weight PF/C ’s
Agreed with Nick: Burks is not a PG. He is a younger, tattooless version of Monta Ellis. You see him because he is a slasher.
Let’s get Lillard. Wow.
As others stated Burks isn’t a point guard and I for one am really exited about having Mo Williams this year. (I’m going to pretend I didn’t see your suggest to go after the basketball player formerly known as Ron Artest)
I don’t think Stephen was saying he thought the Jazz should go after Ron Artest. I’m pretty positive he was saying MWP would fit in SLC slightly worse than he thinks James Harden would. #readingcomprehension
More to the point: I don’t think Burks is a permanent solution at PG. He’s a guy you can plug in for a few minutes in emergency situations, but his mentality is more of a SG. I also don’t understand how people keep saying he can’t shoot. Have I been watching the same Burks as everyone else this preseason? He’s been shooting lights out.
I agree with all who have said Burks isn’t the answer. He’s a SG that can play some PG here and there if needed. I would love to see us go after Jrue Holiday this offseason(RFA)if he doesn’t sign an extension with the sixers. Ty Lawson and Steph Curry are both going to be in that conversation as well but I would imagine Lawson gets an extension and Steph may be a bad bet if he doesn’t stop hurting his ankles.
My other thought is that if Mo works out decently this season for us and wants to stay, that we sign him to a 2 or 3 yr deal at around what we are paying him now. Maybe even a little less depending on his market value. And then we go after a PG in the draft this year to train up under him. We should have 2 first rounders this year to play with as long as we get the warriors pick. 2 names to watch for are Lorenzo Brown and Ryan Harrow. BOTH were recruited by Jazz assistant Sidney Lowe at NC State, but Harrow transferred to Kentucky after Lowe was fired. The media projects Brown as one of the best players in the ACC this year. Also watch for Myck Kabongo at Texas.
Very good thoughts Bracken! I would agree with that all the way. I really like Kabongo I think we will get a shot at him to especially if we have two picks hopefully warriors no tanking this year
The Warriors will tank. I’d put money on it.
