The Jazz are NOT contenders—Play the kids!!
Posted by: Marty on March 5th, 2012
The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.Let’s get real with the minutes Ty! Kanter logs 7 minutes tonight? Favors & Burks 13 each?
Is job security an issue? I don’t think so!
Will any of the players that started tonight’s game be here in two years? Possibly Paul, but that’s it!
Can this team win a playoff series if they sneak in at a 7 or 8 seed? No!
As a lifelong Jazz fan & season ticket holder, I’d rather lose a few more games with the kids than keep watching what we’ve been watching. This year I was looking forward to watching the development of the young players and expecting to see effort every night. I expected close games and an above .500 record at home and road struggles.
What have we seen so far? Playing the vets 30+ minutes has us above .500 at home and struggling on the road; especially against playoff-bound teams. The effort is pretty good most nights—BUT…..where is the development of our younger players? What difference is a few extra losses this year when compared to the development of our team for the next decade?
PLAY THE KIDS!!!!
Thanks for putting up with my rant……

I think a few of the starters will still be here in a few years. Howard will close a deal, al will be here and, if we don’t trade harris by march 15th I believe he will stay here as well. Paul and bell will be gone but the rest should still be around maybe not starting but, they will still be here. I agree kanter burks and favors need more time but, I have no problem with what corbin is doing he is shaking things up trying to find a winning combination and, any jazz fan in their right mind wants exactly that wins. So keep winning ty we will support you with whatever you do
I do not want our future thrown away for an 8th seed and first round
Knockout by the hands of the Thunder. And that is as far as we are going on the path we are on. Even though we are not going to make the playoffs it is still frustrating to watch our young guys get 7 minutes. We need to learn how to develop! Talk to OKC and follow what they did
I disagree creating a winning attitude will go a long way for the kids they need more playing time yes but, haywards a good example. Corbin moved him to the bench taught him the lesson if you don’t perform you don’t play plain and, simple. Look what happens he came out and played, favors burks and kanter if they want to improve at all have that same maintality as hayward had and snown tonight. So starting them or not making the playoffs or not doesn’t change to developement of your young kids.
I’m with you guys in developing the youth, two more draft picks and we will have the tools to go a long way, in the future. Our vets eventually need to go.
You have to understand that there is no way it’s gonna happen this season. We still have a chance to make the playoffs. Does that mean we will? I don’t know. But the fact is it is possible. The jazz will never tank for a draft pick and would never bench their starters to develop the young guys. If we won only 9 or 10 games instead of 18 I think we would have seen a fire sell before the trade deadline. Now there is a chance so we won’t trade the vets in favor of the kids. The only way the kids play more is if they consistently play better than the vets and help the team win.
I think at the end of the year is when you will see the jazz FO make a decision on whether they are ready to go young. If so then there will be some trades.
I think the Jazz plan to work the “kids” into the lineup slowly, while winning as many games as they can in the short term. This probably goes for next season as well.
Fans who want the Jazz to play Hayward, Burks, Kanter, and Favors 30+ minutes, and just completely go with a “youth movement” are probably going to be disappointed.
The Jazz have always had a “win now” mentality.
I don’t think the average JAzz fan wants to go to game after game this season, just to see them lose as the young players “develop” That is not the culture of the past 25 years of the Utah JAzz. Basketball history is rampant with first round draft picks who ended up out of the league in two or three years. We need to play to WIN NOW with whatever team we have.
In this case can you please explain me why the Jazz traded Deron Williams ? For two #3 picks that are bound to have the same role on the team Fes and Koufos had, just because of “history” ? Win now and lose tomorrow …
Look, everyone. Corbin and the Jazz are going to give the older guys a fair shot to see what they can do. For a lot of these guys, making the playoffs is a big next step in their careers (Al) or is kind of like redemption getting back to the playoffs (Harris, Howard, Bell), and I’m totally fine if Ty gives them that opportunity. A good showing in the playoffs and all the vets trade value goes way up. I do have one BUT, however: BUT, if it becomes apparent that the vets aren’t good enough to make the playoffs, I want to see our young draft picks getting plenty of minutes.
Henri its safe to say that if Sloan was still here kanter and burks and maybe even would not be getting as much time as they are now. I think for te most part Ty has been fair. He is loyal to his vets but allows the you guys to get a chance. Bottom line he wants to win like everyone has said.
If it wasn’t for the vets we may have lost to Cleveland. So in certain situations the vets are more likely to get the jazz the win. I think everyone is going to have to ride out te season as is because I think the only person likely to be traded is cj to free alec burks which I would most certainly welcome.
Experience is good. Winning and being successful are even better experiences.
Experience alone won’t develop a winning attitude and tradition.
As a high school coach in SLC once said, if losing builds character, we have a LOT of character.
Early in the season we were competitive with the younger players getting closer to 20 minutes. Now the younger guys are seeing less minutes, but the results are no better.
I’m not saying play to lose—I just believe the younger players should see their role expand as the season goes along, not REDUCED!!
No matter what guys get the minutes we are not contenders! What’s wrong with getting Favors & Gordo a consistent 25 minutes & Kanter/Burks a consistent 20? Would we really be any worse off now? NO! Would we be better of later? Definitely!
Al playing 38 min & being gassed at the end is not getting us any better results than having him play 28 & being fresh at the end, is it?
@Marty: I totally agree with your recommendation. Let us all hope that this is the direction Coach Corbin will soon implement.
Here is the problem you all say that getting to the playoffs is a great experience for the kids well guess what? We made the playoffs plenty before that and where are all our draft picks from those years?
Well some of them are producing on other teams. Kosta Koufos, Kris Humphries, Wes Matthews just a few examples. Do you all seriously think when free agency comes for these players and they have been sitting on the bench for three years they are going to re sign with us? Cause the answer is no!! Why are they going to re sign with us giving them 10 minutes to 20 minutes when they can get more some where else?
What other teams sit two number three picks for players that are not number one options on any championship caliber team?
