The NBA will see training camps open in just a few weeks, but there are surprisingly still quite a few marquee names available on the free agent market.
Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel pointed out on Sunday that Allen Iverson, Jerry Stackhouse, Joe Smith, Flip Murray, Earl Watson, Michael Finley, Larry Hughes, Bobby Simmons, Trenton Hassell, Jarvis Hayes, Ime Udoka and Devean George are all available.

I don’t know enough about some of these guys to say, but I can’t see either Allen Iverson or Jerry Stackhouse in a Jazz uniform. Someone who does not believe that practice is important(AI) probably would not impress Jerry Sloan too much.
Some of these people are old. Joe smith and Michael Finley… Most of these aren’t really huge players anymore. Earl Watson might be a good bench role player. Finley at his age has a lot of winning/veteran experience. Flip Murray might put some points on the board but not a lot of defense. Hayes plays hard and Sloan might like that but he isn’t a great player otherwise. I’d say out of all of these Earl Watson would be the best pick up. But not exactly for our team right now.
I too don’t see any that I’d be overly excited about. Here’s a video of why Stackhouse will never wear a Jazz uniform
sorry here it is

There is a reason why these players remain unsigned. Mostly done, never were, or a cancer.. Diana is right about Stackhouse. He has had several run-ins with top notch NBA players. He is a jerk and will be a terminal cancer on any team. I would much rather give the young guys a chance. Ryan Thompson, Little Sap are two who I think could be very usefull. I am looking forward to training camp..
I always liked the idea of Stackhouse in Utah, but after seeing that video…wow.
The guys that I wouldn’t mind being in Utah; Joe Smith, Flip Murray, Earl Watson, Larry Hughes, Bobby Simmons, Jarvis Hayes.
Thanks for posting this list Justin. There are some interesting names. Out of the ones listed, Joe Smith and Earl Watson make the most sense–savvy veterans who can still play spot minutes. Watson can run an offense. The others, while a little over the hill (Finley, Simmons, Hassell, Udoka), can each hit a jump shot. I do hear a lot of positive things about Ryan Thompson, so we’ll see.
By the way, is there a less talented player than Devean George? I always wondered if he lasted so long thanks to hit bit part on those Lakers championship teams.
Can’t wait for training camp!
Marquee is a strong word. None of those guys are marquee and haven’t been signed yet for a reason. A few of them might help our bench a bit, but that’s it. We do need to sign a center, but that’s about it.
Great comments everyone.
Of those players listed, I’d be interested in Watson and Smith, though we are crowed at Smith’s position. Watson would be a definite upgrade over Gains (though I like Gains).
That stackhouse video was a great post! I don’t remember seeing that. What a punk.
I still like he need another big. Maybe we are just buying our time with Fes.(betting that no one else will offer him more than our qualifying offer).
Smith is ancient too. But he can still play pretty well.
I like when you watch the stackhouse video. On the side is a bunch of similar videos of stackhouse knocking guys over. Dude is a “insert expletive”. ha That’s why nobody even mentions him ever being on a Jazz uniform.
Just saw the video stackhouse fights like a girl
Wow, I remember that fight. I still can’t believe Hornacek was tossed for that one, imagine what the ref must have heard Horney say.
Kirk freaking Penney! Leading scorer in FIBA and the face of New Zealands franchise. He joined the D-league in march. The man is a wicked knock down shooter. I watched him a little while ago and mentioned him to David Locke and he just waived it off. Then NBATV did a piece on him.
He’s available and CHEAP! I would be ecstatic to see him in a Jazz uniform
If Finely wasn’t so old I would snatch his length and D up in a second.
