The author's views are entirely his or her own and may not reflect the views of the Utah Jazz.First off, it’s great to finally be able to watch the Jazz again. That being said I have been disappointed with what I have seen. I don’t claim to be a basketball X and O’s expert, but I do love watching/playing the game. But it seems to me that many times when run the pick and roll on offense, the guard after having the screen set, doesn’t look for the roller to the basket, but continues to drive to the middle. I noticed this many times against Memphis and it was driving me crazy as Favors had many opportunities to roll to the hoop unimpeded. The one time that stuck out to me when the guard actually gave up the ball (Hayward), Favors had an easy layup. I’m willing to admit if I’m wrong on this, but it seems that our guards are looking for their shot first, when they have an easy play at the hoop if they will just give the ball up. Thoughts?

I was just about to write about the same thing. It seems like the pick and roll was Utah’s staple for so many years, even after the Stockton era. Maybe it has something to do with Corbin?
i think Corbin needs to go. This team has all the right pieces to contend and be a force if the coach new who to play and when to play them and make good changes not 3 min late. oh a and I hope your already for another depression the Black guy seems to be the boss
@ Austin – lets leave politics out of this or we will get into an argument. I was very annoyed when I heard Corbin was given an extension. He is not a good coach. I think the Bobcats did the smart thing in looking at college coaches when looking to promote. corbin seems to be a yes man who likes to be the veterans friend rather than their coach.
It’s like our strength has become our weakness. How profound.
The pick and roll is the perfect basketball play. It should result in SOMEONE being unguarded and open for a shot, but relies on the ball-handler to get that person the ball. You pick the guard’s defender off, so he’s trailing the guard, which makes the big man’s defender have to come over and defend him to avoid giving him a layup (which, on our team Al does TERRIBLY), and then the guard can hit the rolling big man for an open layup. If they bring help defense over, then he’s leaving someone open, and you hit him for an open shot.
I haven’t seen Mo Williams make any good passes out of the pick and roll yet, but he sure does take his own shot quite a bit. Which so far, hasn’t been a terrible thing, he’s making them at a good rate. But I think you have to get your team involved as a PG.
I agree, Mo needs to look to pass more, but is that really the type of player he is? He’d still get his shots within the offense, but I’m not sure he’s naturally able to see plays develop ahead of time. He’s a scoring guard who still gets decent assist numbers from fast breaks. Where he struggles is trying to find the open man in half court sets.
The purpose of the pick n roll is to give the offense options, by putting the defense in tough situation and then to take what the defense gives you. There are so many options by running the P&R the right way.
Examples: if the defender goes under the pick, the ballhandler has a wide open shot. if he goes over the pick the ballhandler drives, when he drives if there is a help defender from the opposite side you can pass it to that side for an open 3 … Thats how Money Memo had so many open 3’s
The example you give with Hayward and Favors is a great example of running it the right way. Haywards defender went OVER the pick and is now trailing the play, it gave hayward an opening to drive the lane. Hayward drove it HARD and Favors defender HAD to help, favors then rolled to the hoop and hayward made the right play by dumping it off to him for the layup.
The starters don’t really run the P&R that well, which is sad cuz they should be really good. Especially now with respectable 3pt shooters in Marv and Hayward. Millsap isn’t the “roll” or “dive” to the hoop threat that favors is, but he’s better than jefferson. Hopefully they figure it out soon.
